Rules of the Sheffield Workhouse
A number of documents have survived which relate to Sheffield's early workhouses. An insight into workhouse life is given in an extract from the ‘Rules for the Sheffield Workhouse’, c.1750 (pictured):
'‘…the Master stands in the inside of the Room… Lets in the poor one at a time then… hears their Complaint if they think it proper they take them into the [work]house… if not they turn them ought [out]… lets in another poor until all is heard…’
