Amami e sii felice

Dear Cousins

We ought to have answered your kind letter before this and intended to, but various circumstances have prevented. We are anxious to hear from our friends often. Mr. Foote's health has not been as good ad usual for several months past. But has been able to do his chores most of the time and attend church. He is very much engaged in the cause of our blessed Saviour. Prays earnestly for never dying souls both here and in other places particularly for our friends. In these things we are agreed. Hope the friends in Greenfield are well and striving to gain an inheritance in the skies. This is all important hope none will neglect the great salvation. I did not see Anson Greene when out there. I hope he is preparing for a better inheritance. Charity, I found a ebbyjah Greene's address, when I was in Mayfield, I got it from [end of page]

a presbyterian minister. It is Highland Falls, N. York. He is preaching there. I have not heard from my sister in some time. I wish you would both write and tell us all about the friends in Greenfield. We had a pleasant and safe journey home, found all right to about the house and found But the grasshoppers and drought have done us much harm for 2 years past. They destroyed all the grain that was put in the ground last summer, made destructive work of every green leaf on the peach trees and currant bushes - ruined the pie plant & other things. They are a great evil for a description of them see Joel 1st 2nd. They left the last of June after the's the farmers planted corn & sowed buckwheat and raised a crop so that it was some help. It was a great mercy to have anything. The corn did not all ripen. But it answered some purpose for feeding stock. Our children are all well that are near us and are striving. I think to walk in the straight and narrow path to heaven. We hope to meet all our dear friends in heaven "this world's a vain an empty throw" But there is joy substantial in heaven. Whatever we may lose hereI hope we may not lose that ever lasting inheritance prepared for them that love God. May we be found watching when the master calls for us with our [lampes] trimmed and burning. Much love to you all in God. Write soon.

Catharine Foote

Sunday afternoons are never the busiest at work, so the quiet spells gave me a chance to sit there and bind up a load of documents. The binding looked somehow appealing for a photograph, but never quite worked out how I expected it to.

Tancred, Christopher, 1689-1754. An essay for a general regulation of the law: and the more easy and speedy advancement of justice (London: Printed for Stephen Austen, 1727); 20 cm. Call # Taussig 363.

The Sun Inn was formerly the Rising Sun PH. The timber-framed No. 17 was once a merchant's house erected in the 16th, possibly even the 15th, century and would have been part of rows of buildings crowding on either side of St Stephen's Lane. The house was converted to an inn around 1560. Refurbished in 1720, it stood next to a gabled rectory, presumably for the nearby church. When the cattle market was moved to the site of the current country bus station in 1810 it became the Sun Inn. However, in 1795 the 'Ancient and Most Venerable Order of the Druids' held a meeting there, 'at the house of Brother Willam Phillips at the sign of the Sun inn'. Once the market moved to Prince's Street (opposite the Greyfriars tower) business fell away and it closed in 1901 and in laltter years became Atfield and Daughters bookshop which features amongst these slides
