Trad'r Sam is one of the legendary dives in San Francisco (it opened in 1937). A couple owned it and when they passed ownership went to their children and grandchildren. All of them were sucking from the revenue nipple but not putting anything into maintenance or repair. So the joint was in disrepair. Including their iconic and beautiful neon sign. In 2023 the bar closed when one family member sued another. The parties settled and they made a whole bunch of repairs, including getting their beautiful neon sign working again and the bar reopened.
While I'm glad the neon sign is now working, I liked the interior better before the repairs.

Jonell's Bar went belly up. Another victim of the pandemic. In January I spoke with a woman who used to hang out in Jonell's bar. She told me that Kendra, the person in the photo, passed away.

This place has been in continuous operation since the 1940s, when its prime position between the Convair bomber plant and the worker housing ensured a lucrative business at quitting time.

Van Ness Avenue, as it runs through San Francisco, is U.S. Highway 101, hence the name of the bar.
This was the first time I met Robert and before he moved to Arizona,I would see him most of the times I was at the Geary Bar.
In 1984 Robert was the bassist in a Punk band called "The Vandals," where he went by his middle name Brent. You can hear Robert on the Vandals' first album "When in Rome Do as the Vandals.

If you walk the streets of Portland, Oregon, the odds are good that you’ve met Elvis impersonator Les Small, and further, that you remember the encounter. Small is a singular character and one that is hard to forget.
Portland photographers and filmmakers David Malmborg and Tracy Pitts are currently in the process of making a feature-length documentary on Small, and it promises to be fascinating.
I encourage you to follow the link below to watch the trailer, and to consider donating a few dollars to the project.
Thank you, Austin

Here's the restaurant I posted yesterday with the colors corrected in Photoshop. I set the white and black points for each channel individually; for the original scan, the histogram for green was a lot more prominent.
The Club Ms. Mae’s is famously known as New Orleans’ cheapest, 24-hour dive bar. It’s a hole in the wall but locals say Ms. Mae’s should be on everyone’s bucket list.

The lazy people at Yahoo Maps continue to identify this area as "Lower Nob Hill" and it's not. Those not familiar with the area should know that "Lower Nob Hill" is the name the thieves in the real estate industry (Donald Trump is in the real estate industry and that tells you all you have to know about it) have given to large sections of the Tenderloin and Polk Gulch, which, for many, many years have been down and out neighborhoods.
Frank, owner of the late, great 21 Club in San Francisco's Tenderloin district.
The 21 Club was included in Esquire Magazine's "Best Bars in America" in 2008 (www.esquire.com/food-drink/bars/a4474/best-bars-list-0608/), but it could have been in that list in any year.
The 21 Club closed in August 2015 and was to be replaced by a more upscale bar. More than six years later the space is still empty.
