The Geary Club is one of my favorite bars in San Francisco. Small, low key, great pours and divey. In 2023 it was bought by a group that owns several other bars in the city. I haven't been to it since the purchase. This was in 2016 and the bartender in the photo has been gone for several years. Her signature comment was "I don't give a fuck."

One of my favorite dive bars is the Blue Room Lounge in Garberville. It's a friendly local watering hole where a man can go to forget, even if he ends up remembering too much. It's an establishment where the bartenders sit down at the bar and join the drinking crowd at the end of their shift, and return to tending bar eight hours later, albeit a little more wobbily. It's the kind of place where they let the patrons sleep with their heads on the bar to recover from long bouts of nonstop drinking. Throw in the subdued twang of the country music on the juke box, and you have the perfect spot to sit and stare comatose into a cocktail for a spell.

Happy Slider's Sunday everyone

Wish I knew more about this place....I loved the early 20th century brick work. The former neighborhood corner cafe has become a successful neighborhood watering hole....so drink up! Oklahoma City,Oklahoma. 6.14.2017.

This joint is a serious dive and not just a "local's" joint. A piece of their neon sign (It doesn't light up anymore) says "Open 6 AM" and they do open at 6:00 AM. I was here many times and took a lot of photos most all of which suck really hard. This time though it was a Saturday night, I was with my nephew and we were sitting back from the bar...lucky shot.

i pulled into the Barbary Coast for a few beers this afternoon after shooting. Barbary Coast is a local's dive bar in Wilmington, famed for its rough clientele and cheap drinks. Murphy came up beside me, pointed at my camera, and said 'thats a nice expensive camera. you know whats the most important part of the camera?' taken back a bit by this grizzled man suddenly appearing at my shoulder, i pulled my camera over to me. 'yeah. the photographer...' 'ahhhhh. good. you get it. that took me a good while to understand.' we talked for 20 minutes. people will surpise you and share the most interesting things if you let yourself engage with them. its like macro photography - everything, everyone is wildly cool when you get on their scale. Murphy talked about hummingbird territorial combat (hummingbirds for all their delighful 'cuteness' to us are actually brutal thugs in their own world, the avian equivalent of siamese fishting fish), the hospitality ethos of the pashtun tribesmen, an original joe rosenthal print of the Iwo Jima flag raising photograph he bought (and which hangs in the bar). 'The camera doesnt lie. never forget that. its just gear. photography is what happens in your head, the rest is just mechanics.' then the slightly drunk stare that is supposed to say 'listen carefully to this secret 'space and timing - thats all photography is, thats all. dont forget it. got it? dont forget it.' he then surveryed the room and said 'hey i'll pay you to take a picture of the bar from over there,' pointing to a corner behind the pool tables. 'let me take your picture and we'll call it even then, murphy.' 'alright, thats a deal, but you should know, i'm legally blind in my left eye.' about 30 minutes after we took this portrait, he comes up again, very conspiratorially and whispered -'shhhh...act like we are talking...' 'we are talking...' 'right... but act like we really talking. ive got a bet going for another beer with my buddy. who is that north carolina writer guy? famous guy, a long time ago.' i waited for some more information, some sort of qualifier, something to help reduce the solution set as it were. he stared at me with that expectant look. 'thomas wolfe,' i ventured. 'Thomas Wolfe!!' he shouted, spinning around to face his friend, 'of course, everyone knows its Thomas Wolfe!' then he turned back around and said 'how did you know that?' 'umm, bud. it was a guess.' 'nahhhh thats no good, never tell folks you guessed, just tap your eye like you saw something they didnt --- and it helps to be legally blind in your left eye...its spooks em up'

As we were talking he invited me to hear his band play either the next day or a couple of days later. Somewhere nearby...I forget where. I didn't go, and I don't know what kind of music they play.

Specs (in my opinion) is one of the great bars in San Francisco. And it's due in large part to its outstanding bartenders.

Gotta love a dive bar with a real martini glass...

It's a little tough to make out, but on the far wall, almost in the center of the image, is a large poster of the "All-Time Italian American Football Team" which includes photos of such greats as Vince Lombardi (coach), Lyle Alzado, Alan Ameche, Dick Bassi, Angelo Bertelli, Nick Buoniconti, John Cappelletti, Ralph Gugliemi, Franco Harris, Daryle Lamonica, Gino Marchetti, Ed Marinaro, Dan Marino, Leo Nomellini, Babe Parilli, Andy Robustelli, Phil Villapiano and (of course) Joe Montana.

Awesome.

Yesterday there was a full “Strawberry Moon” 🌝 and it looks like it will be clear enough skies over the tri-state area to witness the glow so our thoughts immediately went to the Moonlight Lounge in Paterson, New Jersey. This dive bar has the jauntiest, colorful signage!

Famous New York City pick-up lines. This is an unknown dive bar. Your mission is to identify it. Best I can say is that it's near to, probably south of Houston Street in NYC,

Their review reads as this -

The OLDEST bar in Asheville, NC (est 1960). WE DO NOT SERVE BURGERS!! Come on down to our no frills, mostly locals, watering hole!

No, the Burger Bar isn’t for everyone. And it shouldn’t be. It’s a straight-up, no-frills watering hole where you ain’t gonna find a craft cocktail anywhere and if the walls could talk you might not want to hear what they have to say. But if you’ve never experienced this little slice of Asheville’s imbibing history and it sounds like it might also be up your alley, it is most definitely worth a visit. “You have to be a certain kind of person to want to come here, experience and appreciate it”

During the Covid-19 pandemic, many bars/restaurants are required by law to limit capacity limits of patrons, or utilize outdoor patio space if social distancing is not achievable inside. In spring of 2020, under Governor Tony Evers "Safer at Home" order, bars were required to shut down at the end of March through the end of May. These photos document this chapter in our city's history, some have been fortunate to make it through but for some this was the last call.

After 108 years The Gangway closed.

San Francisco has lost, and continues to lose, its dive bars. A college friend told me that's also happening in Seattle and the Puget Sound region. And from what I've read, every city and town that's experiencing a good economy is losing its dive bars.

I was in the L.A. area for about three weeks in late October early November 2017 and this was one of my favorite places. The people were really, really friendly and welcoming. The Embers Lounge is famous for its pulp fiction-like paintings by Frank Bowers.

The cake was baked by the woman in the photo and was a birthday cake for one of the other women bartenders.
