Elbow Room

Ft. Lauderdale

exchanging Christmas presents in February

We hope everyone is enjoying the holidays but for some they are stressful and we immediately thought of places we could highlight where one can go and get away from things, and that is why we are posting Randy’s Hide-A-Way in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. We love its faded and peeling #handpainted signage and the #script “Randy’s” painted on each window. #Analog photo from 2006 appears in our book “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York”.

"The world that we used to know

People tell me it don't turn no more

The places we used to go

Familiar faces that ain't smilin' like before

The time of our time has come and gone

I fear we been waiting too long"

Subway Inn on the Upper East Side was in business for more than 77 years before it was forced to close in December 2014 after it's lease was not renewed. One of its most famous customers was Marilyn Monroe , who filmed the "Seven Year Itch" nearby and stopped in for drinks. Arsemio Salinas, who has owned the #divebar since 2007, after working as a porter, bartender and manager for the original owner, luckily was able to relocate the #bar less than 2 blocks away at Second Avenue and 60th Street and re-installed the iconic #vintage #neonsign, the original wooden bar and stools and even the bar booths. Photo and full interview appears in our book "New York Nights". #subwayinn #neon #signgeeks #storefront #signcollective #myfeatureshoot #guardiancities #reportagespotlight #everything_signage #ig_signage #gas_food_lodging #ipulledoverforthis #igs_nyc #tv_retrotype #jj_texttypographical

Kick off the "Power Up" tour in the U.S. with a one-off U.S. AC/DC High Voltage Dive Bar at Machine Shop in Minneapolis; to check out iconic props and pick up exclusive merchandise — including special vinyl releases. I enjoyed spending my time there; an ideal for all diehard AC/DC fans. ;-)

98 Turk Street, Tenderloin district, San Francisco,

local dive bar closed in Dec. 2015 to make way for a fast food "concept" restaurant. In 1996, the SF Chronicle’s Sam Whiting described the 21 Club as “an interesting place to watch a police stakeout".

*Somehow* I have 377 pictures from a road trip to Chicago & Wisconsin that I took with a friend in May 2013... that never got posted.

The Rustic Tavern is a family-owned bar that gets raves for cheap drinks from customers. The Rustic Tavern was chosen in the July 2010 issue of Madison Magazine as the Favorite Neighborhood Bar in Madison! This blocked-corner building was constructed in 1933 with residential upstairs and commercial down below. The outside of it bears two backlit plastic signs.

Over the decades, the Saturn Bar, 3067 Saint Claude Ave., had been a workingman’s watering hole, an ad hoc boxing ring, an artistic oddity, an end-of-the-night destination, and, in the years after Hurricane Katrina, a music venue.

Like countless other New Orleans bars, this one started life as a corner store, and then it became a succession of bars under different names. The Saturn era began in 1960 when the late O’Neil Broyard took it over. He was the bartender and the soul of the place, a perpetual presence with an eye for the obscure. O'Neil died after Hurricane Katrina and the bar now has new owners.

527 Bryant Street, SoMa, San Francisco. The bar is now the Lava Lounge, loosing it's dive bar status.

401 Ellis Street.

Jonell's went belly up during the pandemic. It was one of the last really divey bars in the Tenderloin and though I don't go down there much anymore, I'm gonna miss it. And someone told me that the person walking past the doorway (a regular at Jonell's) had died. A double whammy.

Neighborhood bar and liquor store. Bottoms up!

The Desert Inn and Restaurant (also known as Wilson's Corner) is a historic site in Yeehaw Junction, Florida, United States. It is located at 5570 South Kenansville Road, next to SR 60. On January 3, 1994, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

In the 1930's, the spot was originally named "Jackass Crossing," a reference to the burros that ranchers rode to Desert Inn.

As early as 1889, the Desert Inn was a bar room and brothel for cowboys and lumber workers. The Desert Inn also didn't install full-service water and electricity till 1978.

Throughout the years, the Desert Inn has been a trading post, gas station, and dance hall. In 1994, after being added to the National Register of Historic Places, the unused rooms about the restaurant were converted into a modest museum that featured a bordello suite with red carpet, lace pillows and a swing.

(Un)fortunately they've gone thru a recent renovation, the neon is gone and their advertising now claims "cleanest, best kept bar in the area" -- not exactly what to expect from your neighborhood dive bar.....
