Well, today was interesting. I'm still pretty pleased with how my life is looking, but I'm still trying to figure out who my friends are and what exactly I'm doing with my life. This picture was really taken in tiredness and annoyance. My back has been killing me, and I've slept more than half of my day. But I'm excited about the end result. I added a Gaussian blur and drop shadow.

The zone of fractured rock near the center of this view marks the plane of a small fault. In this area on the southwest edge of the El Paso Mountains, layers of soft, stream-deposited siltstones (gray) and harder stream-deposited sandstones (red) are overlain by a massive layer of pink tuff breccia formed by the consolidation of volcanic ash. Displacement along the fault can be seen by following the contact between a layer of dark gray siltstone and the overlying pink tuff. The block to the left of the fault plane has been displaced upward by about 20 meters. These rocks are part of the Dove Springs Formation, dating from the late Miocene, about 10 million years ago. There are several displacement tutorials on the web. I've replaced this photo as it was looking really weird in Chrome. Discovered that both images used in the process must be in 8 bits, or else the Distort filter will not apply.

All the shape and text layers that you want to distort must be combined into one layer, which must be rasterised. And to do that, you have to convert the layer into a Smart Object.

The second time around, I followed the tutorial to the letter at www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/dispmap/dispmap.htm. I also changed the Blend mode of the phone layer to Dissolve.

The other thing I know I did differently this time was to Export the starting image as jpg from Lightroom to CS5, INSTEAD OF opening a jpg version in CS5 from Lightroom. This really seems to matter for Chrome. I also checked the image mode was 8 bits BEFORE I started.

The Type 57 Bugatti, introduced in 1934, marked Jean Bugatti's emergence as Bugatti's leader and creative force. It was the first new model built under his direction and it incorporated many features that were new to Bugatti. Its dual overhead camshaft eight-cylinder engine had dimensions of 72x100mm, offering 3,257cc displacement. The crankshaft ran in five main bearings. The camshafts were driven by a train of helical-tooth gears at the engine's rear with a further crankshaft bearing behind them. Finger cam followers minimized side thrust on the valve stems.

The Type 57 also marked Bugatti's first use of a transmission fixed to the engine crankcase and a single plate clutch. The top three gears in the four-speed gearbox were constant mesh. Jean created a novel independent front suspension system using transverse leaf springs for the first two examples of the Type 57 before Le Patron spied it and insisted it be replaced by a proper Bugatti hollow tubular live axle. Thenceforth suspension was traditional Bugatti semi-elliptical front and reversed quarter-elliptical rear leaf springs with cable-operated mechanical drum brakes.

Much of the Type 57's commercial success may be attributed to Jean Bugatti's sensitive, flowing coachwork, which graced the most famous of the chassis' examples.

But, by no means all of the cars were clothed with factory derived or commissioned coachwork, and some of the most striking designs that can be seen on Concours lawns the world over came from the coachbuilders' one-upmanship in what was clearly the zenith of coachwork design before the interruption of war.

Despite financial travail, development of the Type 57 continued with the introduction of a stiffened frame and rubber-mounted engine along with the supercharged 160hp Type 57C in 1936. In 1938 the nearly unthinkable happened in Molsheim, when Bugatti finally adopted Lockheed hydraulically actuated brakes and replaced the beautiful and lightweight but expensive aluminum-spoked wheels and brake drums with Rudge-Whitworth center-lock wire wheels and separate brake drums.

The car

The extremely handsome, one off coachbuilt Bugatti presented here is accredited by Bugatti experts to be a collaboration of its original owner with the Swiss coachbuilder Graber who were one of the leading Swiss coachbuilders of their day.

Most of Graber's 50 workers were skilled specialists, and the firm regularly displayed their latest creations on their stand at the Geneva Salon. It could be said that they were less flashy than some of the French coachbuilders, less advanced than certain Italian efforts but they were definitely of higher quality than most and displaying the well-balanced design preferred by their wealthy clientele. The success of Hermann Graber's company may be judged by the fact that it perpetuated comfortably into the 1970s, long after many of its pre-war contemporaries had ceased.

According to information supplied by Bugattiste Kees Jansen, 57443 was completed by the Bugatti Works in September 1936 and was sold in chassis form to the Bucar Bugatti agency, who had operations in both Berlin and Zurich. This particular order was for the Grob Agency in the Zurich Canton of Horgen. 57443 is one of a handful of Type 57s that were supplied at this time all with chassis numbers in close proximity of each other, notably, 57444, 57446 and 57447. 57443, 57444 and 57447 were all to be equipped with coachwork by Graber. Jansen's records state that the rolling chassis was driven over 150km to Hermann Graber's coachbuilding works on September 21, 1936.

The car's original owner is said to have been an architect and was therefore responsible for the design, while the coachbuilder was for its construction. A number of its features including the hood louver treatment are common with other Graber bodies.

The result was a dramatically different automobile to the factory offered Pillarless sedan, which was arguably a victim of practicality over style. The car here is a clever, set-back, close-coupled design retaining the popular scalloped side panels synonymous with Bugattis, and dispensing with running boards to accentuate separate 'teardrop' or pontoon fenders. It is unquestionably a success, and it is perhaps only at second glance that one notices the presence of the secondary door. With the spare tire set at the back of the car, the full design of its side from its quarter-batched hood louvers backward is uncompromised, always a sporting styling touch. Another particular feature which is rather interesting are the long 'eared' wheel hub spinners, which it is said were to make wheel removal easier for a lady owner early in its career.

Fighting between Government and opposition forces last April pushed thousands of civilians to displace to Padding and Lankien, both still under opposition control. The massive displacement, that duplicated the population, brought an outbreak of cholera and a serious need of health assistance, drinking water and food distribution among the population, according to the local leaders.

In a global climate of extreme poverty, political conflict, violence and human rights abuses, people all across the world are being forced to seek new lives elsewhere. Zion visualizes that universal anxiety, with each of the sixteen male and female performers carrying an array of personal possessions, various pieces of baggage, and furniture via an exodus choreography of walking, running, jumping, falling, leaning, and sitting—enacting the blistered legacy of segregation, violent displacement, colonialism and apartheid coursing through South African history, American history, and contemporary events. The performance acknowledges both the grief and catharsis of a population subject to the machinations of violence, forced migration, and subjugation.

Israeli military industries moving massive testing facility to south, 1,200 Bedouin structures at risk of forced displacement

Planned facility in Naqab (Negev) desert more than twice the size of Tel Aviv; Adalah & Bimkom demand authorities reject or find alternative plan for Ramat Beka that doesn't harm Bedouin residents.

2 December 2018

Israel's state-owned weapons manufacturer is relocating a massive testing facility from the center of the country to an area in the Naqab (Negev) desert in a move that puts some 1,200 Bedouin homes and other structures at risk of forced displacement

Adalah – The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights and Bimkom – Planners for Planning Rights have filed an objection to the IMI Systems (formerly Israel Military Industries) facility to the Ramat Beka area, demanding that Israeli planning authorities reject the move or find an alternative that does not harm the area's Bedouin residents. A hearing on the objection will be held tomorrow, Monday, 3 December 2018.

[CLICK HERE for hi-res photos of Adalah & Bimkom touring the Ramat Beka area]

The Southern District Planning and Building Committee will hear the objection against the "Ramat Beka Special Industrial Zone", filed on 3 December 2018 by the two NGOs on behalf of the Bedouin residents and representativesof the local committee of the following villages in the area: Abu Qrinat/Umm Mitnan, Wadi el Mshash, Wadi al Na'am, Abu Tlul, and Swawin, and the Regional Council for the Unrecognized Villages in the Negev.

The planned weapons testing facility (27,770 acres), more than twice the area of the city of Tel Aviv (12,850 acres), is located amidst multiple Bedouin communities and will expose residents to health, safety and environmental risks.

The plan would also impose severe building and development restrictions on 1,213 structures in the concerned villages and is liable to result in the forced displacement of area residents.

In their objection filed 26 September 2018, Adalah attorney Myssana Morany and Bimkom architect Dafna Saporta maintain that the plan does not rely on sufficient factual basis and that it disproportionately violates the right of area residents to dignity, life, health, and to environmental justice.

The establishment of the high-risk military industrial zone in the heart of a populated area means that local residents were not taken into account when preparing the plan and that they are seen as "transparent" or as a "problem" that can be solved through eviction.

Adalah and Bimkom stress that in light of the fact that thousands of Bedouin residents have lived around the Ramat Beka area for countless years, the plan must take them into consideration and prevent harm or at least reduce harm to the residents.

In addition, Adalah and Bimkom note in the objection that an environmental impact report is not the proper tool for examining the impact of the program on the health of area residents. Rather, a health impact report must be conducted that would examine alternatives intended to prevent or minimize the harm to residents.

Morany and Saporta emphasize that "this plan joins other programs promoted in the Negev which – under the cover of 'regional development' and 'job creation' for certain populations – effectively block Bedouin villages, expose residents to health risks, and leaving many residents without shelter."

[In accordance with obligations stipulated in legislation approved by the Israeli government in order to harm organizations that criticize its policies, we would like to point out that Bimkom is an organization whose main sources of funding are donations from foreign policy entities.]
