October 2009, Darfur, Sudan. With ICRC support, this family resettled after nearly five years spent in the Gereida camp.
The return to a normal life very often presents a formidable challenge to the IDPs themselves as well as to the authorities and resident communities.
Options for IDPs should include: returning to, and being reintegrated into, their communities of origin; being integrated into communities where they have found shelter; or being relocated to, and integrated into, a community somewhere else.
Whatever decision IDPs make should be voluntary, pursued in safety and with dignity. It should also lead to the restoration of livelihood and access to essential services.

Getting creative with the Black Nore Lighthouse near Portishead.
I used a rust texture from the dry dock of the SS Great Britain for the background and a displacement map created from the lighthouse to apply the effect to the surface.
Blurred the background and shifted it to create some separation.
How does displacement feel like? Fear, the loss of a way of life, despair for the future and hopelessness from the lack of justice. How does it look like? A makeshift home, abandoned, the inability to grow food or make a living.
Stopping off in Norwegian Church Aid’s compound brings a reminder of how important cattle are to people in South Sudan. For many South Sudanese, their cattle represent their wealth and so raids carried out in the last year have sparked retaliatory violence leading to death and displacement.

No One Is Illegal and neworldtheatre present...
Storytelling Our Lives:
Stories of Migration and Displacement
Featuring: Sindy Angel, Adriana Contreras, Gurpreet Kambo, Amal Rana, Ghassan Shanti and Carly Teng
‘Storytelling Our Lives’ is an exciting new theatre production that involves young people of colour sharing their personal stories of immigration and displacement in a series of deeply moving and courageous testimonies.
These performances are a culmination of a series of workshops as part of a collaboration by No One is Illegal and neworldtheatre. The project and performances hope to jointly contribute to bridging the gap between art and activism by bringing into focus the individual faces and unique stories of those who have gone through the migration process. This project also draws upon the deeply rooted and central role of culture, creative expression, and storytelling as key components of resistance movements by providing a connection between personal narratives and global understandings.

For social housing & against pipelines: Unite struggles against displacement!
Social Housing Alliance Nat’l Day of Action for Housing statement in unity with Burnaby Mountain defenders
This fight against the destructive resource extraction economy is also a fight against displacement and housing shortages across BC. Today pipelines and other resource mega-projects are causing displacement in Indigenous and working class communities, from Burnaby to Kitimat, where pipeline construction pressures have brought a 0% vacancy rate and mass evictions and rent increases. Social Housing Alliance stands with the resistance at Burnaby Mountain to say NO to ongoing displacement for corporate profits held up by the colonial Canadian state.
Burnaby Mountain is not Canada’s “public” land
On November 14th Supreme Court of Canada granted an injunction in favor of Kinder Morgan, allowing police to forcibly remove protesters so that the company can begin its drilling work. But Canadian courts do not have legal jurisdiction on unceded Coast Salish territories. Burnaby Mountain is not public land for the Canadian state to offer to a U.S. company for resource extraction. It is Indigenous land caught in an ongoing cycle of dispossession.
On top of destroying Indigenous economies and ways of being, short sighted resource economies make lives worse for Indigenous and working class people around the province. Local economies are upended, housing costs increase, sexual and gender violence against Indigenous women spikes, and more pressure is put on low-income residents, all for temporary jobs.
We say stop displacement! They say cut taxes!
Though the government claims that resource extraction projects can fund social housing and social services, this same government is providing tax exemptions for resource extraction companies while keeping taxes low for all corporations. Taxes have never been so low. Today the BC government is subsidizing corporate profits while aggressively defunding social housing. In the next ten years, over 30,000 affordable housing units will lose their funding in BC.
Social housing and social programs are not starved because of a lack of wealth in British Columbia. Tax cuts and government austerity are the product of the very corporations and government that bring us pipelines as a temporary salve to economic crisis.
Corporations and colonial governments are united in their drive to colonize the land and prioritize profits over social well-being. In response, housing and environmental justice movements are standing united in resistance against displacement and dispossession. Let’s together stop Kinder Morgan in their tracks!

This theme ‘Displacement’ investigated the theme of both rural and urban erosion. To demonstrate my ideas, people were displaced in these carefully selected run down environments, placement was not always the decision of the photographer; an array of figures scattered into the landscape made for a surreal experience. This displacement is to signify how the economy can change and reshape lives as simply as the wind changing direction. The impact throughout time of an economic down turn can dramatically impact on the lives of those who live in both urban and rural communities. As banks and creditors tighten their belts, more and more businesses both big and small face the consequences. As large supermarkets are eager to continue their capitalist profiteering decide to source products abroad at cheaper rates, local farms and small businesses face closure unable to meet such cheap supply and demand. It is paradoxical as ordinary people no longer able to afford the finest foods or luxuries of organic produce seek cheap fodder for their hungry brood driving down prices even more.
These beings in the landscape stand still, only their heads moving back and forth, up and down, like standing to attention; attention to what their minds exude, maybe this twenty second capture allows them to forget all the troubles in the world or maybe they are shaking their heads in annoyance at their current situation. The sequence of the head movement suggests hidden identity and emphasizes the subject’s vulnerability and instability. I have always allowed the viewer to perceive what they wish to perceive, the title stands purposely structured in brackets so that the viewer is open to other interpretations. To create the illusion of levitation I photographed the space twice from the same tripod position, first with the objects and figures and then without. In Photoshop The Buckets and ladders etc. where replaced with the same space of the empty Photograph. The sepia filter juxtaposes the old with modern times. Reminiscent of time long gone; capturing the uncertainty of the atmosphere.
The decision to represent my thoughts at night – with the stars above, illustrates the magnitude of the problem, and closure of everything at night adds to a sense of fear of it all. Nightmares and sleepless nights go hand in hand with anxieties and troubled minds. I appear in some of my photographs deliberately to show my concerns about the environment and indeed my own employment in the future. It also adds for a more spiritual and meaningful work for myself as an artist.
The speed in all cases is the same, 45.45miles per hour. But you end up in different places! Shouldn't the physics reflect that these are in fact very different trips?
This is where displacement and velocity are important. Draw a map like the one at the top right of the board. We'll call one direction positive, (towards Hartford) and one direction negative (towards Niantic.) Thus the displacement for going to Hartford is 50 miles and the velocity is still 45.45 miles per hour. But to go from Hartford to Niantic is now a displacement of -50 miles and a velocity of -45.45miles per hour.
The most interesting one is the round trip. Your displacement is now zero! You ended where you started. This makes your velocity zero.

4 July 2017. Padding: Displaced people sit under trees where they currently live in an area where hundreds of displaced people live in Padding, Jonglei, South Sudan.
Fighting between Government and opposition forces last April pushed thousands of civilians to displace to Padding and Lankien, both still under opposition control. The massive displacement, that duplicated the population, brought an outbreak of cholera and a serious need of health assistance, drinking water and food distribution among the population, according to the local leaders.

Tuthill Blowers offers a wide range of blower packages, Positive Displacement Blowers and custom-designed solutions to suit the unique design requirements.
A positive displacement blower, also known as a PD blower or rotary air blower, is a machine used to transport gas or air for various purposes. Positive displacement technology is used in these systems, which capture a certain amount of air before discharging or pushing it out against the system pressure. This air usually gets pushed into a pipe or hose to transport goods or gas to a specific location.
Let's have a look at how they are helpful for different industrial purposes.
HANDLING AND PACKAGING: Blowers can be used as an alternative to vacuum pumps in low-vacuum packing and handling uses.
VACUUM PACKAGING: To prolong the shelf life of food items, vacuum pumps must be used in the packing process. Vacuum pumps are commonly used to collect air and remove water vapor, fat, and granular materials such as seasonings. In the chamber manufacturing stage, food is placed inside a vacuum bag and packed into a packaging compartment. The bag is heat-sealed after the air evacuates.
THERMOFORMING: The thermoforming process is used to wrap various materials in plastic films or preformed trays. For making a container, heated plastic sheets are put over a shaping die. If the substance has cooled, it is inserted into these containers, and the upper film is heated and secured to the bottle. Thermoforming speeds up packaging efficiency significantly.
BOTTLING: Vacuum is used to equalize friction and fluid flow throughout the bottling process. Contaminants would also need to be collected using vacuum pumps when bottling consumable drinks. Carbon dioxide is pumped into beer bottles during the bottling process to minimize the volume of oxygen within the bottle. When the bottle is filled with alcohol, the filler can also inject a tiny portion of inert gas on top of the beer, expelling the oxygen.
PNEUMATIC TRANSPORTATION: Positive displacement blowers use in pneumatic conveying is to efficiently move dry bulk material from one location to another at different pressures and vacuum conditions. Dry bulk content is transported into a sealed pipeline containing rice, cornmeal, ingredients, whole grains, soy meal, or meat by-products within the food industry. A variety of blower models with tri-lobe rotors and specially-tuned housings are available to minimize blower noise.

Completed as Rothesay Class frigate to specific NZ modifications, HMNZS Otago commissioned at Southampton, 22 June 1960 and arrived in NZ in 1961. She was fitted with the Seacat sea-to-air missile system in 1963. During her long service OTAGO took part in regular deployments to the Far East, to North America, Hawaii, Australia and the Pacific Islands for multi-national exercises. In NZ waters she took part in ceremonial occasions, SAR, royal tours and supply duties to outlying islands. In 1973 Otago was sent by the NZ Government to protest against French atmospheric nuclear tests at Mururoa Atoll. On 28 June, OTAGO sailed from NZ bound for the test zone. The first bomb took place on 21 July and the frigate flashed news of the explosion to the world. OTAGO finally decommissioned on 7 November 1983 and was subsequently scrapped in Auckland.

More than one-third of all displaced households in Burundi are headed by women (mostly widows) and children (mostly orphans), according to a 2004 survey on IDPs published by the UN and the Burundian government. These households are among the most vulnerable, and among the most likely to remain definitively in the camps where they currently reside.
