Sometimes you get lucky. I was visiting some friends, taking family portraits for Christmas. I asked if they wanted individuals of the kids (I wanted practice). When they said yes, the fun started.
They did not select it as a final, otherwise I would have cropped it differently.
STROBIST INFO: 2 speedlights, main light camera right 1/4 triggered by home made household cable, diffused through umbrella. Second light bare, high and at camera left for highlight 1/16 triggered optically.
The LED is a nice SMD LED that I bought in Shanghai from Luckylight. They make nice LEDs, although surface mount was a pain to deal with using a 1$ 'firestarter' soldering iron and random cable.
A plastic container from one of those delicious tiny asian jelly snacks works as a water seal and diffuser. I used a glue gun to fill it halfway, then threw it in the freezer for a bit.
Pro tip: This is better than the traditional ping-pong ball diffuser because of the flat bottom. Use one in your next project! IF it fails you still have a nice snack, too.
River, Matt, Jerrell and I went to Harry's in Hyannis for post Chistmas festivities
Flash was hand-diffused. A new technique of mine, after so many White Russians.
Cette photo a été prise en août-septembre 2009 en Mongolie (région de Batsumber) dans le cadre des activités de l'association Jardins du monde (JDM). Elle est diffusée par la Station Alpine Joseph Fourier (SAJF) (France). Identification: JDM & SAJF (d'après Grubov 2001 Key to the vascular plants of Mongolia). © I. Lorre/JDM.
To diffuse the light, I use plastic sheets from an ond LCD display.
This is a semitranslucent sheet plus a fresnel lens sheet which is used in the monitor to make the light from the LEDs behind the LCD layer as even as possible so I figured it would work here as well. The sheets are just taped together for now.
In these two shots the light source is just the modelling light and not the real flash and the only difference between them is that I flipped the sheets over and as you can see, rotating them result in a much wider light distribution even though it's the same exact light.
