This photo is by no means anything perfect but that was not my intention.
I finally got a flash diffuser.
So now I can take better photos in the dark and when I need some fill light (:
Also.
I took this picture the night I got back from singing at Open Mic at a restaurant/bar. I listened to the song by ear and picked up on it in about 20 minutes, left with my mom, practiced about 2 times and went onstage. There were only about 20 people there so I felt a little better. I got lots of compliments so I felt really good. I even got requests to come back next week and with even more material! So, I'm glad I grew a pair and did it. (:
I will try and post the video.
If it doesn't work... you can find it here on my facebook.
I first had butter paper as diffuser in mind. But the problem with butter paper was,you have to apply it layer by layer. So you apply a layer, take a shot, check the diffusion.Less diffusion, add more paper.More diffusion?Less paper.
Instead I chose this.its a bio foam square dish. Here in my place we get nice cherry tomatoes in these.I had kept it way back preserved then not knowing what to do with it until now. This thing we can get in plastic/stationery shops.
I took this for 2 reasons.
1.its depth is perfect for me.Not too much and not too less.
2.This provides a bit of warmth in the flash light unlike usage of butter paper which gives a cool look.
Glue this on the support bars on the open side.Apply a thin layer at first.
Gently press the dish on the support system. If there any gaps, put some more glue and gently press on it.It will stick.Give it 5-10mins to completely dry off.
We are very close now...Next step.
Next And Complete Set.
This last prototype uses Carbon fiber strips like a dome tent, white ripstop nylon for the diffuser (and the inside surface), and black duck cloth. The connection is made with 12gauge aluminum armature wire
The carbon fiber strips allow the diffuser to collapse for storage.
Strobist info - Canon Speedlite 550EX with diffuser +2 power. camera right (it was sitting on top of two camera bags as I can't afford a lightstand and brolley yet, - the holidays were &^$£ expensive) and oh yeah, no post-processing whatesever...ok, ok, I cropped it just a tiny bit from the bottom
This shot is exciting for me for a number of reasons
1 - Its my very first proper SP posted here on Flickr - Never was interested in SPs and just didn't get it at first. But must admit, have grown to like the idea just enough to do one myself. Plus, its a fantastic way to practice.
2 - It my first off-camera flash shot - I never liked flash. But having to use it for a couple of clients, I learned that flash is your friend. Now I just have to learn how to use it properly. This shot was the last of about 50 taken tonight.
3 - Its my first post in the New Year of a shot TAKEN during the New Year.
Lots of firsts and I have a good feeling this year about me and my photography. Thanks to all the flickrites, I am growing more and more each day....(ok, nuff sobby stuff)
ps. this is the first time i have babbled this much about a shot!
Photography Assignment
Creative Communications, Red River College
This was a lighting assignment, and this shot used diffused natural light through a curtain to soften shadows and evenly light the subject.
Canon Rebel SXi
Full summer sun. Played with holding a 24" diffuser at different distances. Here the diffuser was very close to subject, just outside of the camera's view.
A diffuser for the SB800 made from a sheet of A4 paper, and a cross section of a bicycle tube to hold it on... brilliance!
Playing with some product shots.
580 above through diffusor disk at 1/4th power. Another 580 behind, bouncing off foamcore to the left at 1/16th. ST-E2 triggered.

This brand's coffee container (any flavor, not just decaf) fits over a Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash.
This second prototype eliminates the redirection, since it didn't really work that well and made the thing huge. I also changed the mounting so that it connects to the flash shoe. Lastly, the diffuser material is now ripstop nylon.
This is my macro rig .. To use the EF-S 60mm on my full frame 5DMKII I've fitted a EF12 II Extension Tube (stops it breaking internals) I add the EF25II when I want to get real close.
The diffuser panels were removed from broken LCD panels (the backlight section) where I work. They do a great job diffusing the light and simply held in place with an elastic band.

Snow White is now fully deboxed. She is posed standing, supported by a Kaiser doll stand. She is photographed from various angles, in diffuse natural light.
She is basically the 2013 Classic Snow White doll, with the addition of a sound mechanism in her body. She is also wearing a much more movie accurate version of her iconic Princess gown. The skirt is still the same length, shorter than the movie version. She is also without her cape, and the bow is positioned at the side of her head rather than at the top. My doll has a lopsided hairdo, which I attempted to straighten out, but the stiffness of the curls prevented me from fixing it with just my fingers. The only change to her face is a slightly lighter lip color. Her painted on panties are a darker shade of yellow. The change in costume makes her look much more elegant and royal than the Classic doll. The set also includes a movie accurate rags dress that I have not yet tried on her.

This was taken using a torch and an ornament from my house, I don't think you can get much more low tech than that.
The inside is lined with HVAC tape, and there are 3 spaced layers of 100% nylon trim fabric. This material does not block much light, but it sure does spread it out. 3 layers gets good results, and you can see that with the pictures on this page.
There are many unique details about this diffuser, so I've posted a fuller description of it at:
