The inside is lined with HVAC tape, and there are 3 spaced layers of 100% nylon trim fabric. This material does not block much light, but it sure does spread it out. 3 layers gets good results, and you can see that with the pictures on this page.
There are many unique details about this diffuser, so I've posted a fuller description of it at:
The quadratic residue diffusor that JR and I built. It still needs the edges finished and sanded but it's helped the room out a lot.
Portrait in full sun at 11am on the beach in Santa Barbara. I diffused the sun with a 52" Calumet zip disk.
I was mesmerized when I saw this scene because the lighting was just so good. It was so good it reminded me of those cars ads, you know the ones with perfect lighting, and you know that’s because behind the camera they are using very professional light diffusers to expose all angles properly! I think the sunlight’s reflection by the water made similar effect in this scene :)

Found these bottles at The Container Store. Just looked like the right size for a flash diffuser. I chose to cut off as little as possible but you could make the diffuser somewhat shorter to your liking. Bottle cost about $2.99 and fits the inside retainer of the Vivtar 285HV perfectly.
tried to make my own diffuser (shown here) to produce a better flash effect on my subjects. The other 2 pics illustrate this effect on Mazinger Z.
Made from a small cardboard box and some pieces of transluscent weighing paper and held by staples n tape.
Some pictures to try my prototype diffuser fins out.

I like the light in the bathroom. It comes through a small window and the top and diffuses through a big white curtain.
DIY diffuser - a short length of plastic plumbing pipe, plastic end stopper, reducer, and lots of silicone sealer.
The plumbing pipe is half filled with coarse gravel to help aerate and diffuse the flow of water.

A bright day, but the sun has always been softened by a haze and high level clouds. This was taken at the Bay of Sannick this afternoon. The headland on the right is Duncansby Head.

The concave shape was inspired by Steb1's small concave diffuser he created for his MT24 EX (Canon equivalent of Nikon's R1C1 macro flash system), you can see Steb1's equipment setup here - flic.kr/s/aHsjjHRWp5.
I molded some plastic around the end of the SB-R200 using polymorph which protuded enough to slot in a small plastic tube. The tube naturally bends into an oval shape when slotted into the plastic mold. A concave, oval shaped deodorant lid is placed in the end which has further diffusion by 2 layers of velum paper glued to the deodorant lid. Not ideal for lighting background but concentrates the light at the subject and is very portable and not clunky or oversized like previous designs.
