The tomb of Archbishop John Peckham (d.1292) stands in the north transept close to the site of Becket's martyrdom. The bishop's effigy is unusual in being carved in wood, though the darkened finish we see today is likely very different from the original effect, when the figure was probably embellished with painting and metalwork attached separately, such as a silver or bronze mitre that has been prized away, leaving the bishop with a curious 'scalped' appearance.
The effigy lies within a beautiful cusped recess, its gabled canopy being a good example of the early Decorated style and preserving traces of the original colouring.

Arguably the most important of England's cathedrals and its Mother Church, few other buildings embody the nation's history as much as this one. It also bears the distinction of being the first major example of Gothic architecture in Britain, where French masons introduced the style during the rebuilding of the choir following a major fire in the 1170s. Throughout the following centuries it became one of Europe's leading centres of pilgrimage, when thousands flocked to venerate the shrine of murdered archbishop St Thomas Becket, but brought to an abrupt end with the English Reformation, when a saint who defied a monarch was viewed with particular enmity. Though all traces of the rich shrine were destroyed, the site of Becket's martyrdom in the north transept remains a place of reverence to this day.
The cathedral is a stunning building which represents both the earliest and latest styles of English Gothic architecture, from the French inspired eastern limb and apse, to the nave, transepts and the three towers, all soaring examples of the Perpendicular style, the central tower (the 'Bell Harry') being an especially fine structure (the north-west tower was rebuilt in the 1830s as a copy of its medieval neighbour on the south side following the demolition of an earlier Norman tower, thus the present symmetry of the west façade is a relatively recent feature, originally its mismatched towers would have given it a more Continental appearance).
The earliest parts of the cathedral however are Norman, represented the easternmost chapels and transepts flanking the choir, survivors of the fire of 1174, each transept being adorned by a richly decorated miniature tower. The crypt below is the finest in the country, extending below most of the east end (with a transitional early Gothic extension to the east under the apse). Superb examples of Romanesque art can be seen in many of the crypt's sculpted capitals, and the unusually well preserved murals in St Gabriel's chapel (sadly photography is forbidden in these areas).
The cathedral contains many notable tombs and monuments of all periods from the 13th to 20th centuries, foremost amongst them being the tombs of Edward the Black Prince (with a superb bronze effigy) and King Henry IV.
It's most celebrated feature is its wonderful collection of stained glass, much of it dating back to the late 12th and early 13th centuries including a sequence of the Ancestors of Christ and the especially beautiful 'Miracle windows' in the ambulatory (relating various miracles associated with Becket's shrine). The glass is justly famous as the very finest in Britain, its deep blues and reds often compared with the famous windows of Chartres.
On the north side many of the former monastic buildings remain, with a fine late medieval cloister and a vast rectangular chapter house. The cathedral library also stands here, but was rebuilt after being destroyed by bombing in World War II; fortunately all the medieval glass in the cathedral had been removed for safe-keeping throughout the war and damage to the building was otherwise superficial.

A few years back, the Swedish company Ikea advertised a commercial showing a gay couple different from the status quo face commonly shown in a commercial brave enough to feature a gay/lesbian folk.
The couple was an Afro American/black male and an Asian American man. Also visible was their kid–a small Asian American girl. The commercial was wonderful, progress of a different kind. I actually wrote Ikea to congratulate them not for featuring a gay couple, but for showing an apparent loving gay couple who existed outside the typical white face of the general gay community.
That I am aware of, no controversy arose from that commercial. Then, if memory serves correct, they were part of a montage showing diverse couples and individuals(?).
Still dreaming of the day when the media will stray from its avoidance phobia to showcase a real or imagined couple happening to be black/of African descent. Attn: JCPenny!!!!

Desegregation of the U.S. Armed Forces:
Executive Order 9981 is an executive order issued on July 26, 1948 by President Harry S. Truman. It abolished racial discrimination in the armed forces and eventually led to the end of segregation in the services.
Truman's Order expanded on Executive Order 8802 by establishing equality of treatment and opportunity in the Armed Services for people of all races, religions, or national origins.
The Order's operative statement is:
It is hereby declared to be the policy of the President that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion or national origin. This policy shall be put into effect as rapidly as possible, having due regard to the time required to effectuate any necessary changes without impairing efficiency or morale.
Don't Ask, Don't Tell:
Don't ask, don't tell" (DADT) was the official United States policy on homosexuals serving in the military from December 21, 1993 to September 20, 2011. The policy prohibited military personnel from discriminating against or harassing closeted homosexual or bisexual service members or applicants, while barring openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual persons from military service.
A congressional bill to repeal DADT was enacted in December 2010, specifying that the policy would remain in place until the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff certified that repeal would not harm military readiness, followed by a 60-day waiting period.
A July 6, 2011 ruling from a federal appeals court barred further enforcement of the U.S. military's ban on openly gay service members. President Barack Obama, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, sent that certification to Congress on July 22, 2011, which set the end of DADT for September 20, 2011.

Poppy is indifferent to the fish, which have been an enduring fascination for Bob. Bob, however, has never got the big deal about rubber balls.
I'm really starting to wonder about Poppy. My mother-in-law saw her dam at the breeders and confirms that she was a proper yorkie, but we only know what the breeder told us of her sire: "he was a big yorkie." I'm starting to wonder if the "big yorkie" wasn't actually an australian terrier, or maybe a silky terrier.

Bank Holiday Monday and something different by visiting the 30th Annual Truck Fest in Peterborough. The major celebrity was some American woman called Lisa Kelly from the TV Show Ice Road Truckers. However, the noise from the monster trucks was rather impressive.

The newly constructed Lake View Park alongside Rawal Lake has become a favourite picnic spot in the city.

The Lake View Park of Rawal Lake is located on Murree – Islamabad Highway. CDA is the builder of this lovely park which constructed lovely installations of amusement park, passenger train, games and sports for all ages. Motor Bike safari, and many other thrilling sports have been added. Motorized as well as Manual Water boats are also available at the site.
General Information
Rawal Lake in Pakistan is an artificial reservoir that provides the water needs for the cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Korang River along with some other small streams coming from Margalla Hills have been set to form this artificial lake which covers an area of 8.8 km². Korang River is the outlet stream of Rawal Dam. Rawal Lake is located within an isolated section of the Margalla Hills National Park.
