We went up to the Lake District for a walking weekend in May, only our third trip in three years. I was hoping for decent weather but the forecast was appalling, it had rained hard in Huddersfield for 48 hours and was going to carry on. I checked the radar picture and it was fine north of Manchester – and it was! It was a different world, the roads were dry and more importantly so were the fells. The weather held fair all weekend, raining overnight, it did put us off doing a big walk one morning as it was still raining at breakfast time and the cloud was very low. There was a time of day that we would just have gone regardless, now I want a view from the top – I’m getting choosy.
On Saturday we drove up to Honister and Parked at the Quarry. There was a Foden Alpha loading at the side of the car park so that was the first stop, a few photos and a chat with the driver, 20 minutes later Jayne came back looking for me having set off without me. It will be an interesting drive up to the quarry in a 44 tonner I would think, a bank holiday weekend as well. We headed up the quarry road and then across to Brandreth, Green Gable, had a good wander around the top of Great Gable, taking in the best viewpoints all the way around. A holiday weekend and for a while we had Gable to ourselves, very unusual. We dropped over the top down to Beck Head and back under Gable Crag, over Brandreth again and on to Grey Knotts heading straight down the fell to the car park, back at the car for 1.00pm – Brysons tearoom in Keswick next stop for coffee and toasted plum bread. Gable is a fantastic top with some of the best views in the Lake District – on a clear day!
On Sunday, after some overnight rain – in places – we again headed to Keswick, then up to Braithwaite, the Coledale Horseshoe beckoned, with a couple of extras at the end for good measure. It’s a long slog up Grisedale Pike but it kills a large chunk of the days climbing at one go. Again the fells were very quiet, I think that the appalling weather in the rest of the country – and the atrocious forecasts, put a lot of people off. Only at the end of the walk did we meet people heading up – as we were done for the day – on the fells! The Coledale is another cracking walk, Hopegill Head, Eel Crag, Sail, Scar Crag and Causey Pike. The light was fair for photography, not fantastic. On Causey Pike we did a U turn and headed back to Outerside and Barrow, just to add a couple of extra tops on and put us in a better place for the walk back to the car. Again we were off the tops in good time with the afternoon to ourselves.
Driving up to Keswick on the Monday the cloud from overnight rain was hanging low so we resorted to plan B – Idleness! We parked at Rosthwaite and set off to explore Borrowdale on foot, including a trip up Castle Crag. For ten Minutes the light was brilliant I was chomping at the bit to get down along the riverside, we don’t normally stay low so it was a pleasant change. The cloud rolled over, thick and grey, blotting the sun out and that was more or less that. We yomped up Castle Crag with moaning kids and wives dotted about puffing and gasping. At least it was fine, calm and warm.
Most of the photos were taken with the little EOS M – with its touch screen! The problem with this very responsive touch screen is that it can’t be locked, only switched off. I carry the camera on a wrist strap in my hand and every time I touch the screen a setting gets altered without check or warning. When I got the photos on screen at home I realised that there was a problem, the camera had switched from Raw + large files to smaller Jpegs, not quite a disaster but close, the photos weren’t great and were salvageable, still being as good as the output from an older digital camera – a lesson learnt – I hope!

Three very different Ursula dolls are presented side by side, so they can be compared. They are fully deboxed, and are in a standing pose. On the left is the limited edition Sea Witch Ursula, released by Mattel in 1997, as the third doll in the Great Villains Collection. On the right is the newly released Disney Store Limited Edition Ursula 17'' Doll. She was released on October 1, 2013, the same day as LE Ariel and LE Prince Eric in the same series. She promotes the release of the Diamond Edition of The Little Mermaid on Blu-ray and DVD. In the middle is the free standing Ursula 11'' play doll, part of The Little Mermaid Deluxe Doll Gift Set, released by the Disney Store in 2013. Of course she is no comparison next to the limited edition dolls.

The most noticeable difference between them is that LE Ursula is so much larger than the Great Villains Ursula, especially her torso, arms and head. LE Ursula is in her factory pose, supported by the included display stand. She is exactly 17'' tall on the stand, to the top of her hairdo. To the top of her head, she is 15'', and from the bottom of her torso to the top of her head she is about 9''. Her tentacles are about 8.5'' long. Great Villains Ursula is 15'' tall on the stand, where her legs have been stretched out. In her box pose, she is 12'' tall. Sitting down off the stand, she is about 9'' tall. Her tentacles are 9.5'' long, so are actually about an inch longer than LE Ursula's tentacles. They are much thinner as well, but also more posable.
LE Ursula arms rotate about her shoulders. Her head appears to be posable, but I couldn't turn her head using what I thought was a reasonable amount of force, and making sure that her necklace wasn't jammed into her neck joint. Her upper body is a hard plastic, light purple in color with a shiny pearly texture. Her lower body is plush. She has a great mass of white hair heavily gelled, with two gray streaks. She has long black antenna-like rooted eyelashes. Great Villains Ursula's arms also rotate about the shoulders, but her head is definitely in a fixed position. She has much shorter light blonde hair, with green streaks.
LE Ursula has a much more elaborate outfit than the Great Villains Ursula. Of course that is to be expected as LE Ursula is a 17'' doll. She has a skirt that hides the display stand under her, as opposed to the open doll stand of the Great Villains Ursula. Also the LE Ursula's stand is placed flat against the base of her torso, whereas the Mattel Ursula has the stand's rod inserted into an opening at the bottom of her torso. Neither stand is especially sturdy, but LE Ursula's stand has the advantage of being attached more securely, so the doll can be picked up by her body without the stand falling off.

Cette image je l'ai fait à 3842m (l'Aiguille du Midi) et surpris., Qui est une montagne dans le massif du Mont Blanc dans les Alpes françaises.
Le téléphérique vers le sommet, le Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi, a été construit en 1955 et a tenu le titre de la plus élevée du monde téléphérique depuis environ deux décennies. Il détient toujours le record de la plus haute ascension verticale téléphérique du monde, de 1035m à 3842m. Il se déplace de Chamonix au sommet de l'Aiguille du Midi - un gain d'altitude de plus de 2800 m - à 20 minutes.
Le nom de "l'Aiguille du Midi" se traduit littéralement comme «l'aiguille du midi". Il est dit que le soleil se trouve directement au-dessus de la crête, à midi, vu de Chamonix.
I got the house stained using 4 different stain colors, distressing in between layers. I am using paper clay to add the chinking between logs on the exterior but still have LOTS to go. I had fun painting the floor with different stain colors to make it look like wood :). Then, I sanded the whole floor to distress it and coated in satin top coat. I also installed the curtains. Always a feat!
I'll apply something on top of the roof wood, maybe some pine cone bits. Eventually, I'll be adding moss (of course) and flower boxes and shutters and plants. Whew!
Most of the furniture is complete now. I still need to finish the bed and bedding plus figure out what to do for table and chairs.
My sweet hedgehog and her baby are tenants so far. They were created by the incredibly talented jujurodgers on Etsy. Love her work!

During day 3 of Missouri River Academy we examined different parts of the Missouri River ecosystem, from the plants that grow along its banks to the fish that swim in its waters.
We started the day off learning about birds from the Missouri River Bird Observatory. Students looked at bird skulls and played a game that mimicked a bird’s migration pattern. The kids used all of their senses on a riparian forest hike and unleashed their artistic sides by painting Missouri River-inspired watercolors.
After lunch, we set back out onto the river to go fishing with the Missouri Department of Conservation! Some students dissected Asian carp, an activity loved by some and disliked by others, but everyone enjoyed using poles to fish for catfish.
Students stretched their minds with Minute Mystery riddles during the Olympic games (The Pride is in the lead by 5 points) and ate watermelon by the pool during community time.
Today was the final day of research for the Missouri River Action Project. Tomorrow students will work on drafts for their presentations, which they will create and present on Thursday.
We watched the sun go down from the river during a sunset cruise. The students socialized and opened up to each other during a group reflection activity called Rose, Thorn, and Bud.
It is wonderful to see the friendships among the campers growing with each passing day!

Today we look at something that's a little different, produced under the keen oversight of Good Smile Company. Her name is Cyclion Lavender, and she transforms from robot to motorcycle mode.
Like me, you've probably never heard of this line, and if you ordered it its because you've got a thing for sleek looking female robots aka Gynoids.
The official blurb states that Cyclion is an original concept, developed by Basil no Zoukei Tamashii and designed by Tsuyoshi Nonaka. I remember reading a comment somewhere that said the last time they saw these, they were basically garage kits, making this line the first commercial release of the characters.
Retailing for around 8,000 yen and composed of well painted plastic and die cast metal parts, the loadout is pretty much what I expected at this price point, which basically includes four additional hands (two weapon holding, two posing) and a rather lackluster ankle support.
The actual figure is definitely a looker. Clad in a purple and silver body, Cyclion Lavender is not a bulky figure.. She's very streamline, with enough curves to emphasize her feminine design. Die cast metal calfs add both weight for balancing as well as an organic curvature to that part of the body. She's pretty much got that ninja look to, especially if you take into consideration her weapons of choice are twin blades and you take into consideration the design of her head covering. You can even remove the cycle front wheel parts from the robot mode for a sleeker looking figure.
Cycle mode is definitely something very organic yet alien in design.. I can't really describe except maybe as some concept vehicle that Tesla might make. It's not a perfect disguise, as the hands are pretty much right out into the open, but to be fair nobody ever said she was hiding from anyone, and there are many anime vehicles that clearly don't care to hid their humanoid parts.
According to the manual, the bike is sized to accommodate your typical 1/12 or Figma release (Good Smile Company and all) but a test with Motoko shows the bike to maybe be a bit on the small side, at least by North American standards. It's a neat feature though, especially when it's one that I can actually take advantage of.
Paint Work and Build Quality are exquisite, as one expects from Good Smile. With so many smooth surfaces, any haphazard paint applications would easily show up. Cyclion Lavender is just glorious all around, with an almost seamless transition between the plastic and metal paint apps (you can see the texture differences). Joints move smoothly and everything snaps/tabs as designed, with no wonky movements. Finishes on the parts are fantastic - again, being curves any flaws really show up.
Sounds like a dream, right? Well.....
What can I say? I know nothing is perfect, but from an articulation perspective, Cyclion Lavender fails pretty spectacularly. The main points of articulation on a modern day figure, let alone from a company that makes freaking Figma of all things, aren't there. There are no ankles, single jointed knees, almost no existent thigh twist, standard hips, no waist, no mid torso joint, standard shoulders, single jointed elbows. wrists, and standard ball jointed head. She also has toe articulation and heel articulation, but those are more happy little accidents due to the transformation scheme.
Basically, she's going to always be facing the same direction as her toes with a frozen torso. The range of motion on her head is also strangely limited, though nowhere as bad as the rest of the figure. Also, due to no ankles, if you want to pose her with the legs slighly splayed, you're probably going to want to have an extra stand handy, as the included one really doesn't help unless the figure is in a standing upright position.
I remember this general crap articulation being an issue with the SSSS Gridman I got, but in that case I chalked it up to staying rigid so the combined mode could stand, but here, the best I can come up with is keeping the curves of her lower back intact, something I'd be happy to see a break in if it meant I could actually do cool ninja poses.
All in all, a beautiful figure looking figure with a slick alt mode. The problem is she basically can't do any fun poses whatsoever. It's too bad, really, because even the inclusion of a waist alone would have helped immensely. There's always bike mode, I guess.

A different stereoscopic view labelled as one of the Oak Grove Cottages operated by Louis F. Goodsell. I'm guessing it dates to the 1880s or maybe a bit later. There is no further info provided, but the building is recognizable as the home still standing at 59 Mountain Avenue today. It is currently for sale. A small man or boy can be seen standing at the left end of the porch. He seems to be casually dressed and is holding some sort of long handled implement, perhaps he's a gardener.
Since there were several different buildings operated under the umbrella name of Oak Grove Cottages, perhaps they were run something like separate bed & breakfast inns. Their advertising appealed to families, and they were probably more reasonably priced than the larger hotels in the area.

Pour un monde plus harmonieux
J’ai pensé ces statues comme autant d’individus ou de groupes d’individus, chacun appartenant à une religion, à une ethnie ou à une culture différente et pourtant constitués de la même matière (ici l’argile). Nous faisons tous partis de la même humanité et ce qui nous recouvre importe moins que la force collective. En choisissant pour les items une couleur neutre sans être totalement unie, j’ai voulu faire ressortir le poids du nombre et le potentiel extraordinaire de ces milliards de personnes qui contribuent, par leurs qualités bien personnelles et leur travail, à l’avenir de notre planète.
Il s’agit d’une création porteuse d’espoir, qui veut donner une impression de puissance et être aussi une source d’apaisement. En effet, j’ai voulu susciter le désir de participer activement à la beauté du monde, en ajoutant sa particule aux autres particules afin que nous puissions nous élever ensemble, du même souffle, vers un monde meilleur. Un monde plus doux et plus respectueux des différences, un monde en paix, comme ces statuettes blanches qui ondulent, à l’image du drapeau qui met fin à la guerre.

On this first night, Goddess Shailaputri is venerated (‘Shaila’ is another name for the Himalayan mountains and ‘Putri’ means ‘the daughter'). We celebrate the extraordinary focus and determination She had in Her sadhana in order to gain Lord Shiva as Her husband. We also pray to this aspect of The Divine to strengthen our own resolve and strength in our spiritual practices so that we can attain our goal: God-realisation in this lifetime.
Our traditional Navaratri practice every night is to perform a Guru-Puja, Kalash-Puja, yajna, abhishekam, and arati, as well as satsangs from different speakers and Gurudev Himself. Tonight we had a satsang on the Divya Prabandham, an introduction to the Mukunda Mala Stotram, and this year, we will have Gurudev's special commentary on this scripture every night.
