This adult male is perched on a photo prop near our fountain. There are not that many different species of Grosbeaks in North America. In New Mexico this bird favors the high mountains that have aspens and mixed conifers. These flocks are scattered across middle North America, and are recovering from a serious population decline thought to be caused by chemical budworm treatments carried out in Canadian forests that they frequent. Up here (8600 ft msl) they are seasonally regular... but not predictable. This cooler high-altitude region is near the southern extent mapped for the species

Something quite different for me, coz I don't do birds!
A black Swan, Mr and MRS Blackbird, sparrow, an Ostrich in the Cape, South-Africa
And a Cormorant in PADSTOW, Cornwall.
This Cormorant had been delighting me with its dives and popping up when it flew onto the sandbank and took this pose, I gather to dry its feathers?
They are coastal rather than oceanic birds, and some have colonised inland waters.
They range around the world, except for the central Pacific islands.
They are fish-eaters, dining on small eels, fish, and even water snakes.
They dive from the surface, though many species make a characteristic half-jump as they dive, presumably to give themselves a more streamlined entry into the water.
Under water they propel themselves with their feet.
Some cormorant species have been found, using depth gauges, to dive to depths of as much as 45 meters.
After fishing, cormorants go ashore, and are frequently seen holding their wings out in the sun; it is assumed that this is to dry them.
Unusually for a water bird, their feathers are not waterproofed.
This may help them dive quickly, since their feathers do not retain air bubbles. (info Wikipedia)

I decided to process a different shot of a scene I had previously presented. In this scene the sun is illuminating more of the background. This is a composite image with a stack of 8 exposures for the water in order to smooth out the tones, a darker exposure for the background to retain detail, and a lighter exposure of the foliage.

The badlands surrounding the Little Missouri River in North Dakota are a prime example of erosion's effects upon the various sedimentary layers and variably dense matierials contained within. Not only does one find different layers of sediment from the ancient sea that once existed here but also countless hoodoos and iron oxide-laden formations that were once embedded within softer materials that have long since eroded away. The cannonball concretions found in the north unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park are good examples, formed thousands or even millions of years ago by pore water that moved in miniscule spaces, deposting various minerals that sometimes collected around a nucleus. I've been experimenting with different features available in my Olympus E-M1X and a handful of the Pro lenses, one of which is focus stacking. While one usually sees this technique used for macro images, it can also be quite handy for landscapes, for it takes a series of images at different focus points and ultimately blends the image set into one image with a depth of field that far exceeds the natural range of a lens. I cheated and post-processed the resulting .jpg file that is stacked and saved in-camera in addition to the original .raw files. Working with such features seemed approriate on a rather gray day at the park this past week. (2-6-2024)
When the Alaska Railroad purchased two SD70MACs from the KCS I was curious as to what number series they would be in. Well the wait is over as they are 4130 as seen here and the other is 4129. This view shows the slightly lighter yellow and what appears to me to be a slightly different font. Nonetheless the railroad will put these units to good use. I believe this was the first revenue run in the new skin.
Bombus sylvestris - Forest Cuckoo Bee

Two very different looking bees here but actually two different colour forms of the same species.
The Forest Cuckoo bee has more variants even than this, but I found the the standard form with the yellow and white and the melanistic all black versions of the Male on the same Forest ride in Harwood.
The very tip of the tale only is red, on both forms which helps identify it from the ‘classic‘ bumblebee.
Cuckoo bumblebees do not collect pollen and are actually parasitic on several bumblebee species, laying their eggs in their nests instead.
The rose was hand forged by my old boyfriend, Mike Mize. We argued and he could not sleep with the full moon blazing in the great picture window. He said he went down to his forge and worked on this piece for me. A love letter was with it, like a mad woman I threw it away. Blah blah blah. It started with “My love for you will last as long as this rose.” He was killed in a car accident April 9, 2000. Drunk Driving landed him in a creek at about 3-4 AM. So tragic, he left a son in high school and a wife!! A Wife!!! He told me he was divorced but I found out that the papers were not filed. I was so angry over that I kept it to myself, she had breast cancer and passed away unnecessarily. She waited too long to get it checked and it was just awful. She started out with an alternative medicine quack and not a doctor. It still bothers me that people don’t understand that they have a responsibility to be here for their children at whatever cost. Her cancer was the kind that is genetic and she could have lived a full life with surgery and reconstruction. He didn’t have to go to a bar across a mountain and get stinking drunk. He was five miles from his family farm. The tow truck driver said that the cab of his truck smelled of whiskey so strong that if you lit a match it would catch fire. So unnecessary and irresponsible. I’m by no means a saint, I know that life happens and it’s hard, full of unpleasantries, and you can’t always get want you want. To quote Mick Jagger. A Different View of the Beautiful Cymbidium Orchid Flower.
Cymbidium plants are sympodial and grow to a height of 60 cm and the racemes as high as 90 cm. The raceme grows from the base of the most recent pseudobulb. Each flower can have a diameter of 5 to 10 cm, according to the species. They bloom during the winter, and each plant can have up to fifteen or more flowers. The fantastic range of colors for this genus include white, green, yellowish-green, cream, yellow, brown, pink, and red [and orange] and black (and there may be markings of other color shades at the same time), but not blue. The flowers last about ten weeks. They have a waxy texture. The rounded sepals and petals have about the same dimensions. They show very diverse color patterns, different for every species.
It is one of the most popular and desirable orchids in the world because of the beautiful flowers. These plants make great houseplants, and are also popular in floral arrangements and corsages. They have been cultivated for thousands of years, especially in China. Cymbidiums became popular in Europe during the Victorian era. One feature that makes the plant so popular is the fact that it can survive during cold temperatures (as low as 7˚ C or 45˚ F) [Actually they will survive at temperatures below 32˚F for short periods and even as low as 28˚F].

I had fun doing this, though they didn't turn out quite how I wanted, and I'm a bit disappointed. They're not my best work, and I'm hoping that next time I do some sort of shoot that I'll be happier with the results
on a better note, I just wanted to thank everyone for being so wonderfully supportive. I've reached over 10,000 stream views and have over 250 people calling me a contact, I'm still surprised that that many people like my work. So thanks again everyone!!
