One of my suit mates, Brandon, is a numismatist, which apparently means that he collects coins. He has hundred of coins in his collection and always carries around a special half dollar his grandfather left him before he passed on. Today he asked me if I could get a closeup of this penny he suspected to be a double die. This means that it was struck twice and will have a 'stereo punched' effect. Since I don't have a macro lens I went to my backup solution. I put my 75-300 on and focused it to ~105mm, then I put my 50mmƒ1.4 and focused it to infinity. Once that was lined up I put the penny in the front and moved it back and forth to find a good focus on the subject. The depth of field was something like 1-2mm with this setup. I used live view-remote shooting to get a razor sharp image. here are some links that are related that you may find interesting.

Die Mainzer Südbrücke erhielt nie einen offiziellen Namen und wird auch als Eisenbahnbrücke Mainz-Süd bezeichnet, obwohl die Station Mainz-Süd inzwischen in Mainz Römisches Theater umbenannt wurde. Die Brücke, die 1862 in Betrieb genommen wurde, führt über den Rhein hinweg und verbindet Mainz mit den hessischen Bahnstrecken. Die beiden neugotischen Brückentürme sollten im Kriegsfall der Verteidigung dienen.
Kurz vor Ende des 2. Weltkriegs wurde die Bücke von der Wehrmacht gesprengt, um das Vorrücken der US-Armee zu verhindern, aber die Brückentürme blieben stehen.

Good times! Well, we Mixed Species guys have known this little fact for a while and live our lives to the fullest. You should too. Plus it's fun to freak the people out who take the time to read the small print on your shirt!

Polaroid will never die
After sixty years Polaroid production was stopped in 2008. A mortal sin, thinks Daphne Koenen. There is much to say for a Polaroid’s plain instant shots in comparison to the Photoshopped perfection of digital photos. Koenen designed a small exhibition as an ode to the instant camera. Six little treasure-chests in the various rainbow colours of the brand contains unique photos made with the last Polaroid film. for the fans there is a box full of gadgets: posters, a flip-book in which you can see how a photo is developed, and a jewellery box containing earrings, a necklace and a brooch made from camera components.

Ard-Eaglais Naomh Pádraig oder nur kurz St Patrick's ist die größte Kathedrale Dublins und die größte Kirche in Irland und sehr alt (1191). Der bekannte Schriftsteller Jonathan Swift (Schriftsteller von Gullivers Reisen) war hier lange Jahre Dekan und ist hier begraben. St. Patricks ist eine wilde Mischung aus Statuen, Monumenten und Exponaten. Umgeben wird die Kathedrale von einem Park, in dem bei guten Wetter die Menschen gern auf dem Rasen sitzen.

The famous writer Jonathan Swift (writer of Gulliver's Travels) was dean here for many years and is buried here. St. Patrick's is a wild mix of statues, monuments and exhibits. Surrounding the cathedral is a park where, in good weather, people like to sit on the grass.
