As a long-time Sixers fan, I was hoping to finally meet him this weekend—we were both planning to watch a mutual friend’s 10-year-old daughter do a charity swim for juvenile diabetes.
It wasn’t meant to be. Dawkins died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack on August 27. He was only 58.
Then, this past weekend, the basketball world lost another legend, Moses Malone, also of an apparent heart attack. He was 60.
Two legendary players, two similar deaths. It makes you think, especially because they had another thing in common: They were both nearly 7 feet tall.
And these are just the latest tragedies. Wilt Chamberlin, who was 7-foot-1, died of heart failure at the age of 63. Earlier this year, Jack Haley, a 6-foot-10 center who played for the Bulls, Nets, Spurs, and other teams, died of heart disease at the age of 51. Last April, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had a quadruple bypass at the age of 68.
This begs the question: Do taller men have a higher risk of heart disease and early death?
* A 1992 study of nearly 1,700 dead guys found that, on average, men shorter than 5’9” hung around till the ripe old age of 71. Men taller than 6’4”, on the other hand, checked out around the age of 64.
* The residents of Okinawa, an island off the coast of Japan, have historically had the longest life expectancy on earth—age 78 for men—and a 40 percent lower risk of heart disease and cancer. They also have the largest number of centenarians per capita. The average height of those who live to blow out 100 candles: is 5 feet even.

dies war mein anfänglicher Plan: zwei Blättchenreihen nebeneinander auf der einen Seite und auf der Rückseite ein Überraschungsblock, den ich nicht verraten darf, weil sonst jeder hier wüsste, für wen der Beutel ist. Vielleicht ist das aber etwas zuviel für den kleinen Beutel? Man kann ja die Rückseite auch nur mit dem blauen Stoff machen.

WW2, Captain in the Royal Artillery, attached to 662 A.O.P. Squadron, Royal Air Force. Awarded D.F.C. and bar. Killed in action at Rees, Germany, on 28 March 1945, aged 30.

Obituary, 'The Shirburnian', July 1945: 'William Strachan Molison, D.F.C., Captain, R.A., attached R.A.F., (g., '28-'32), passed through his school life with few spectacular successes, though he was a good gymnast and a first-class Prefect with a strength of character far above the average and a loyalty beyond question. After a trip to Australia he settled down to life on the Stock Exchange, with work at Southwark and elsewhere as an outlet for his idealism. He joined the H.A.C. and only left it to take a Territorial Commission in 1939. He paid a flying visit to Sherborne in 1942 and was attached this year to the R.A.F. and won the Distinguished Flying Cross. The C.O. of the unit for which he was observing says: "Our Brigadier and myself had been to very high places to retain his services for this present operation. He was fifty per cent. better than any other pilot we have had and saved the lives of many tank crews of our Armoured Regiments by his accurate information and shooting. At times he would 'shoot' two regiments at once which calls for a very high degree of skill." He was killed in the fighting in Europe in April. His life, as a boy and man, was one of service to his fellow men.'
Obituary, 'The Shirburnian', March 1946: 'William Strachan Molison, D.F.C. (g., '28-'32). Captain Molison was in the Royal Artillery, being attached to the R.A.F. The Colonel commanding the 147th Field Regiment, R.A., wrote to Molison's father as follows: "I am not understating facts when I say that your son was 50% better than any other pilot we have had. He saved the lives of many tank crews of our Armoured Regiments by his accurate information and shooting. At times he would shoot two Regiments at once, which calls for a high degree of skill... His plane was hit by a shell from one of the other Divisions in a barrage." The Brigadier of the 8th Armoured Brigade wrote: "Molison put an entirely new meaning into the words "Air O.P"... His father has every reason to be tremendously proud of his son. No man has ever helped our Brigade in the road to victory more than he did, and he has proved irreplaceable."

Die Kaisergewölbe è un font espressivo per titolazioni e logotipi.
Esso esiste nelle due principali famiglie: Violence e Readable.
Realizzato tramite uno script di 2000 righe in robofab/python, è generato secondo parametrizzazioni di curve di bezier modificabili a piacimento che sostituiscono alcune linee di un carattere da me progettato intorno al 2004, ideato per la titolazione di tavole architettoniche di stile costruttivista.
Il font è basato sulla forma dell'arco di cerchio approssimato e segue inoltre una proporzione ideale del corpo di x pari a 24/25 dell'asse y per le correzioni ottiche.
Il font, declinabile nel suo peso dal Bold all'Extra Thin, si presta anche in versione italic a 10°, con un kerning deciso sempre presente e un'ipotetica variabile che crea delle uncinature sulle aste ascendenti.

Die Pfaueninsel mit dem Schloss Pfaueninsel und weiteren Gebäuden liegt in der Havel im Südwesten Berlins. Sie ist ein zur Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin-Brandenburg gehörender 67 Hektar großer Landschaftspark und steht seit 1990 gemeinsam mit den Schlössern und Parks von Sanssouci in Potsdam und mit dem Schloss Glienicke in Berlin als Weltkulturerbe auf der Liste der UNESCO. Die Pfaueninsel ist eng verbunden mit wichtigen Ereignissen und Personen der brandenburgisch-preußischen Geschichte.
Die Insel liegt im wald- und wasserreichen Ortsteil Wannsee des Bezirks Steglitz-Zehlendorf im Südwesten Berlins. Die Entfernung zur Stadtmitte Berlins beträgt etwa 22 km (Luftlinie), die Entfernung zur Stadtmitte Potsdams rund fünf Kilometer. Seit 1924 ist die Pfaueninsel mit einer Fläche von 88 Hektar, davon 67 Hektar Landfläche, als Naturschutzgebiet ausgewiesen. Das Naturschutzgebiet ist als Fauna-Flora-Habitat gemeldet und Teil des EU-Vogelschutzgebiet Westlicher Düppeler Forst. Eingebettet in eine komplexe, historisch vielschichtige Kulturlandschaft müssen die zum Teil unterschiedlichen Belange von Naturschutz und Denkmalpflege sorgfältig aufeinander abgestimmt werden.
Die Pfaueninsel ist aus Berlin über den Bahnhof Wannsee (S-Bahn oder Regional-Express-Zug) und von dort mit der Buslinie 218 erreichbar. Anschließend erfolgt die kurze Fährüberfahrt zur Pfaueninsel. Wie früher eine Landschaft im Samland wird die Pfaueninsel als „Preußisches Paradies“ bezeichnet.

Im Jahr 1833 errichtete Albert Dietrich Schadow am Ostufer der Pfaueninsel als Bogenbohlenkonstruktion den hölzernen Fregattenschuppen, ein Bootshaus für das Segelschiff Royal Louise. Diese auf knapp 18 m Deckslänge verkleinerte, hochseetüchtige Kopie einer Fregatte hatte ihren Namen im Gedenken an die bereits 1810 verstorbene Königin Luise erhalten. Die Lustjacht war 1831 nach dem gemeinsamen Sieg über Napoleon als Geschenk des britischen Königs Wilhelm IV. an den preußischen König Friedrich Wilhelm III. in den Royal Dockyards in Woolwich gebaut und 1832 zur Pfaueninsel überführt worden. 1841 wurde das Schiff zur Matrosenstation Kongsnæs am Jungfernsee bei Potsdam nahe der Glienicker Brücke verlegt und behielt im Fregattenschuppen sein Winterquartier. Während des Ersten Weltkriegs war es dort eingelagert. Der abdankende deutsche Kaiser Wilhelm II. überließ das geerbte Schiff dem Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee zur Nutzung durch die Jugendabteilung. 1926 übernahm die Fischerei-Lehranstalt Sacrow den mittlerweile ausgeschlachteten Schiffsrumpf. 1935 restaurierte die Reichsmarine das Schiff und stellte es als Denkmal in Kiel aus. Nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde es wegen seines schlechten Zustandes auf Anordnung des Alliierten Kontrollrats vernichtet.
Zwischen 1997 und 1999 entstand in Berlin-Köpenick im Rahmen einer „beschäftigungswirksamen Maßnahme“ ein Nachbau der Royal Louise, der seit 2004 unter Verantwortung eines neugegründeten Vereins wieder auf den Gewässern der Unterhavel von der Scharfen Lanke in Spandau bis zum Lehnitzsee bei Fahrland kreuzt. Seitdem dient der Fregattenschuppen wieder seinem ursprünglichen Verwendungszweck als Winterlager der abgetakelten Royal Louise.[(Wikipedia)
Die Kirche St. Cosmae et Damiani (eigentlich richtig Ss. Cosmae et Damiani, da sie zwei Namenspatrone hat) ist eine der beiden evangelisch-lutherischen Hauptkirchen der Hansestadt Stade. Meist wird sie in Stade nur Cosmaekirche oder St. Cosmae genannt.
St. Cosmae wurde in der zweiten Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts im Stil der Backsteingotik erbaut und nach den Heiligen Cosmas und Damian benannt.
Der heutige Bau ist das Ergebnis verschiedener Erweiterungen und Umbauten vor allem des 17. Jahrhunderts. Weithin sichtbares Wahrzeichen der Stadt ist der achteckige Turm mit seiner barocken Haube. Er ist ohne Wetterfahne 62,45 m hoch.
Im Inneren beeindruckt der figurenreiche Barockaltar von Christian Precht (1674–77). Sehenswert ist auch der mittelalterliche Flügelaltar in der Gertrudenkapelle.
