On the eighth night of Navaratri, we focus on Goddess Maha Gauri. As Parvati, She did great penance to gain Shiva as Her husband, and in the process Her complexion turned dark. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva bathed her in the holy water of the Ganges and Her skin turned pure white.
She is the Mother of compassion and peace and reflects the great radiant light within us all. When we renounce our animal qualities and let go of the limitations of our mind, the Mother will bestow Her Grace upon us to help us attain the Divine.

Here are the sister and brother spending their time together at Itacare, Bahia in Brasil. Saw them playing together as their mother was busy working away . So, the elder has to be the mother figure and play the part as a mother looking after the little kid brother.

On the final night of Navaratri, we celebrate Goddess Siddhidatri, who is an aspect of Maha Lakshmi. She is the ultimate form of the Nava Durgas, and the shashtras say she can only be worshiped after all of the other forms have been venerated.
She is the One who delivers success. Those who worship Her with full devotion are bestowed the eighteen forms of success. According to the Puranas, even Lord Shiva achieved salvation through Her Grace. She grants perfection and the power to act with gratitude and humility, revealing the Love of God.

The devotion to Our Lady of the Snows was first introduced to the Midwest in 1941 by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. In April of 1943, the perpetual novena to Our Lady of the Snows was begun. The first Solemn Outdoor Novena was held in 1951, the final day being celebrated on August 5, the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows. The Novena became an annual event which soon attracted thousands each year. In the summer of 1958, work on the permanent Shrine on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River Valley began. Richard Cumming was the architect and Emmet Layton was the landscape architect for the site.

This reproduction of the nij mandir, Shrinathji’s shrine, has been designated by Kapil Sharma, a contemporary graphic artist and a descendant of the master artist, Narayan Sharma (1860-1932/33). With traditional Pushtimarg motifs such as lotus flowers and decorated cows, the shrine demonstrates how a pichvai would be shown behind Shrinathji and the manner in which it would be altered according to the seasons.
The Shrinathji image within the shrine replicates the svarup’s image from an early 20th century painting of the year-end Pavitra festival by Narayan Sharma. This animated pichvai rotates with the changing of the seasons and darshans (viewings of the day). Drawing on centuries of tradition and Pushtimarg aesthetics, yet employing a contemporary language, the shrine brings to life the seasonal variation in pichvais seen in the [Art Institute] exhibition.
I love the special relationship between dogs and their handlers. I am always pleased when I capture an image that highlights that special bond. This is one of my favorites.

A stuffed bunny and its undying devotion. This cross is found during my drive to work. I don't recall how long ago it was but it has been a number of years since the accident which took the life of Rachel and, I believe, her father. All I remember is driving by the scene not long after it happened. Their car had veered into the oncoming lane and met a semi head on. Emergency vehicles were on site and it was clear I could be of no use, so I drove on through. Shortly after, this cross appeared. There was a big news story about the accident but I don't remember the details well enough to state as fact. I am hoping to find the related news article so I can post it here.
I took this photo on New Year's Day. It was very windy and cold. When I arrived on site I found the bunnys head on the ground. I picked it up and placed it back on the body - leaving a piece of grass and dirt stuck to the head.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, also called the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, or the Church of the Resurrection by Eastern Christians, is a church within the Christian Quarter of the walled Old City of Jerusalem. It is a few steps away from the Muristan.
The site is venerated as Golgotha (the Hill of Calvary), where Jesus was crucified, and is said also to contain the place where Jesus was buried (the Sepulchre). The church has been a paramount – and for many Christians the most important – pilgrimage destination since at least the 4th century, as the purported site of the resurrection of Jesus. Today it also serves as the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, while control of the building is shared between several Christian churches and secular entities in complicated arrangements essentially unchanged for centuries. Today, the church is home to Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism. Anglican, Nontrinitarian and Protestant Christians have no permanent presence in the church – and tend to venerate the alternative Garden Tomb, elsewhere in Jerusalem, as the true place of Jesus's crucifixion and resurrection.

Pondering the words of God and praying over the words of God at the same time as eating and drinking the actual words of God—this is the first step to being at peace before God. If you can be truly at peace before God, then the enlightenment and illumination of the Holy Spirit will be with you.
All spiritual life is achieved by relying on being quiet before God. In praying you must be quiet before God before you can be moved by the Holy Spirit. By being quiet before God when you eat and drink God’s words you can be enlightened and illuminated and be able to achieve truly understanding God’s words. In your usual meditation and fellowship, and when you are drawing close to God with your heart, only when you are quiet before God can you have genuine closeness to God, genuine understanding of God’s love and God’s work, and true thoughtfulness toward God’s intentions. The more you are usually able to be quiet before God the more you can be illuminated, and the more you are able to understand your own corrupt disposition, what you lack, what you should enter, what function you should serve, and where you have defects. All these are achieved by relying on being quiet before God. If you truly reach some depth in being quiet before God, you can touch some mysteries in the spirit, touch on what God at present wants to do on you, touch on deeper understanding of God’s words, and touch on the essence of God’s words, on the substance of God’s words, on the being of God’s words, and you can see the path of practice more thoroughly and more accurately. If you cannot be quiet in your spirit to a certain depth, you will just be somewhat moved by the Holy Spirit, inside you will feel strength, and some enjoyment and peace, but you will not touch anything deeper. I have said before, if one does not use all their strength, it will be difficult for them to hear My voice or see My face. This refers to achieving depth in being quiet before God, not to external effort. A person who can truly be quiet before God is able to free themselves from all worldly ties and can achieve being occupied by God. All people who are unable to be quiet before God are assuredly dissolute and unrestrained. All who are able to be quiet before God are people who are pious before God, people who yearn for God. It is only people who are quiet before God who pay attention to life, pay attention to fellowship in spirit, who thirst for God’s words, and who pursue the truth. All those who pay no attention to being quiet before God, who do not practice being quiet before God are vain people who are completely attached to the world, who are without life; even if they say they believe in God they are just paying lip-service. Those God ultimately perfects and completes are people who can be quiet before God. Therefore, people who are quiet before God are people graced with great blessings. People who during the day take little time to eat and drink God’s words, who are completely preoccupied with external affairs, and do not pay attention to life entry are all hypocrites with no prospect of developing in the future. It is those who can be quiet before God and genuinely commune with God who are God’s people.

this is a hacked version of pigeon pose. i was losing the light and had to squeeze myself in the sun so my extended leg is crawling up the couch. oh well.
yesterday in class i looked around (bad me) and saw that no one else had their arms in prayer above their heads. i wonder where i learned that from? maybe callie? maybe alice since her class was so jammed full of people? i think i've asked this before...
rusty said yesterday that where you are is where you need to be. in the moment. i take comfort in that. how blessed we are.
