November 19, 2019: Second Part of Guru Vandana Programme -72nd Sant Samagam

The significance of this day is about the devotion and sacrifice that men and women have made to this country. It's not just another three day weekend which celebrates the beginning of summer and nice weather to come. Memorial day isn't even about the troops that continue to fight around the world that won't be getting together at the BBQ, on the beach, by the lake, or wherever family and good friends meet up this weekend. This day is about those of which have paid the ultimate sacrifice when called upon in conflicts around the globe. It's about the many whom you can't thank in person and those who will never get the chance to spend that time together again with family and good friends. Above all this day is about them, to the individuals who have given their lives up for this country, you are gone but certainly not forgotten. This picture was taken at Southern Regional High School Memorial Day weekend.

The students placed the 6,040 flags on Thursday and had a ceremony on Friday morning. It's a powerful reminder of the lives we have lost during the recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I saw this while driving down Garfield Avenue some time before Christmas and haven't had a chance to stop and photograph it until the other day. It caught my attention once I saw the flowers. They're wilted now but I can still feel the amount of devotion that was given for such an iconic image.

The painting is by a Chicano artist by the name of Israel Valenzuela. I have no other information about him other than that.

Acrylic painting depicting an alien Madonna & Child. The baby is wearing a crown of leaves and rhinestones. This mother has a pyramid in her jewelry reflecting she has been here since the days of the Egyptian Empire. The flower background represents nature and our connection to it. The grey in her hair symbolizes her old soul which has lived through l00's of lifetimes.

This reproduction of the nij mandir, Shrinathji’s shrine, has been designated by Kapil Sharma, a contemporary graphic artist and a descendant of the master artist, Narayan Sharma (1860-1932/33). With traditional Pushtimarg motifs such as lotus flowers and decorated cows, the shrine demonstrates how a pichvai would be shown behind Shrinathji and the manner in which it would be altered according to the seasons.

The Shrinathji image within the shrine replicates the svarup’s image from an early 20th century painting of the year-end Pavitra festival by Narayan Sharma. This animated pichvai rotates with the changing of the seasons and darshans (viewings of the day). Drawing on centuries of tradition and Pushtimarg aesthetics, yet employing a contemporary language, the shrine brings to life the seasonal variation in pichvais seen in the [Art Institute] exhibition.

Two things really struck me when visiting Ethiopia: Ethiopian Orthodox Church and Football seemed to be omnipresent ... and sometimes Ronaldo or Rooney as much adored as Jesus or Mary ...

If I am right

If I can be

Constant and faithful

You'll find me

In my devotion

In my devotion

What if you find a fault

Between my purpose and my deeds

And deem me beyond salvation

Judge me to be unworthy

Of your devotion

Of your devotion

If this be obsession deliver me

A passing infatuation deliver me

A feeling lacking in purity deliver me

A test of fidelity deliver me

Deliver me

Deliver me

What if I should find

You're no good for me

What if I cant be strong enough

What if I cant break free

Of my devotion

Of my devotion
