The Spectrum Centre is a millennium landmark project for communities within the Greater Shankill area. Developed as a multipurpose Arts and Cultural venue, it also house's a Tourist Information Point and is a useful destination for visitors seeking information on things to see and do on the Shankill area.
The Spectrum Centre is built on the site of the former Stadium Cinema. This 1,400 seat auditorium style cinema, a triumph of art triumph of art deco style, was the pride of the Shankill when it opened in 1937. It featured a superb art deco foyer, with a mural that depicted scenes from the industrial life of Belfast. Saturday matinees were a great favorite with the local children, when the action on the screen would be accompanied by the shouts and roars from the audience.
The Shankill can even claim to have given rise to the city of Belfast. It's name derives from the Gaelic Sean Cill meaning 'old' or 'white church'. This is a reference to the parish church dedicated to St. Patrick, known as the White Church, which stood within grounds of the Shankill Graveyard. It was the mother church of the parish and its subsidiary, the 'Chapel at the Ford' in in High Street, stood at the confluence of the Rivers Farset and Lagan, on the site now occupied by St. George's church. It was around this ancient crossing point that the that the port and town of Belfast slowly grew.
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, industrialisation began to take root in the Shankill. Linen and textile production where important and in the second half of the 19th century there were at least 40 different works dealing with every aspect of the textile trade. From the late 1800s, many Shankill men worked in Belfast's shipyards, such as Harland and Wolf and Workman and Clarke.
During World War Two the people of the Shankill paid a heavy price. The ruster of local men who lost their lives fighting in foreign fields is is recorded in Shankill Momorial Gardens. Over 100 people died in woodvale and in Percy Street during night raids by the Luftwaffe in 1941.
In more recent years, Northern Ireland's civil and political turmoil impacted directly on the Shankill and and it's inabitants. The proud sense of local identity for which Shankill folk are famous was famous was frequently expressed in large, vivid murals, often of a milltaristic nature. Today many of these murals portray colourful depictions of protestant history and culture. As the Shankill undertow growth and regeneration, it remains a virbrant and positive place to live and work.
ICES researchers are helping develop safe, secure, and economical underground storage of CO2 by integrating multiple scientific disciplines to understand the various processes occurring from molecular to field scales. The unique aspect of ICES research is the approach of the uncertainty and of the complexity of the fluids in the geological media from the molecular scale to the basin sale and their integration in computational tools to better predict the long-term behavior of subsurface energy byproduct storage. The 16mm cine film Developing Tank appears unused
or if used has been cleaned meticulously.
The ORIGINAL box shows some signs of wear.
The Developing Tank is from Leningrad, Russian / USSR. It has a certificate.
It dates 18 VIII 1964. (That's 18th of August 1964)
The rubber pipes are in really good condition and not porous or brittle at all.
Quite amazing for this age. The Tank itself is almost scratch free, shining
and just looks fantastic. I do not know how to use it. And I am only selling
as I have course fees to pay, so it is a reluctant sale of an object I adore.
