Character design for Ariana, a shape shifter for the story "Legend of Kaylen". She can shapeshift into a wolf whenever she wishes due to a curse of a frost deity. However whenever she shifts, she loses control over herself in wolf form bit by bit, which will eventually lead to her losing control completely and being trapped in this form until she dies. Her design resembles the warrior in the work "Ice Warrior" strongly as I was still developing Ariana at this point.

 

On the left hand side, I had sketched, both with HB, a wolfs eye and tried to create an eye shape for her, which resembles it. This is to show her connection to her wolf form.

 

On the right hand side is a sketch of her staff, made of ice and with runes engraved along it. She uses this as her primary fighting weapon when she is her elf form. The staff is drawn with HB pencil for the base and 4B for the finished outlines and shadows.

 

I choose a dynamic pose for her to understand her body and body language better. It was a great opportunity to study the proportions when some parts of her body, such as the arms and shoulders, are cropped due to her 3/4 stance. It was also a chance to study the movement of her hair and clothes in a dynamic position.

Jökulsárlón (Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈjœːkʏlsˌaurˌlouːn] (About this soundlisten); literally "glacial river lagoon") is a large glacial lake in southern part of Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland. Situated at the head of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, it developed into a lake after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The lake has grown since then at varying rates because of melting of the glaciers. It is now 1.5 km (0.93 mi) away from the ocean's edge and covers an area of about 18 km2 (6.9 sq mi). In 2009 it was reported to be the deepest lake in Iceland, at over 284 m (932 ft), as glacial retreat extended its boundaries.

The size of the lake has increased fourfold since the 1970s.

The lake can be seen from Route 1 between Höfn and Skaftafell. It appears as "a ghostly procession of luminous blue icebergs".

 

Jökulsárlón has been a setting for four Hollywood movies: A View to a Kill, Die Another Day, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and Batman Begins, as well as the reality TV series The Amazing Race.In 1991, Iceland issued a postage stamp, with a face value of 26 kronur, depicting Jökulsárlón.

 

The tongue of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier is a major attraction for tourists.

 

Lagoon[edit]

The Jökulsárlón lake provides outstanding views of the ice cap, a vast dome of ice that rises to a height of 3,000 ft (910 m). It spills to the lagoon 12 mi (19 km) away from the jagged glacier hill to the edge of the water line. The lake developed only about 60 years ago (1948 is mentioned), when the entire area was less than 100 ft (30 m) of glacier, which was only 250 yd (230 m) from the Atlantic Ocean, and 2 mi (3.2 km) away from Vatnajökull. Vatnajökull was at the shore line of the ocean and dropped icebergs into the ocean. However, it started drifting inland rapidly every year, leaving deep gorges en route, which got filled with melted water and large chunks of ice. These icebergs gather at the mouth of the lake's shallow exit, melt down into smaller ice blocks, and roll out into the sea. In summer, icebergs melt and roll down the channel into the sea. The lake does not freeze in winter. Ice water and soil make a unique ecological phenomenon.[citation needed] Jökulsárlón Lake, the "glacier lake", is now reported to have doubled in size in the recent 15-year period. The huge blocks of ice that calve from the edge of Vatnajökull are about 30 m (98 ft) high, which fills the lagoon stocked with icebergs. Some icebergs appear naturally sculpted on account volcanic ash from ancient eruptions that partly covers them.

 

Icebergs

The icebergs that calve from the glacier edge move towards the river mouth and get entrenched at the bottom. The movement of the icebergs fluctuates with the tide currents, as well as being affected by wind. However, they start floating as icebergs when their size is small enough to drift to the sea. These icebergs are seen in two shades: milky white and bright blue, which depends on the air trapped within the ice and is an interplay of light and ice crystals.

On December 12, 2011, groundbreaking ceremonies were held for a new manure digester/energy recovery project in Enumclaw. The project, which was conceived and developed by King County, will be constructed and operated by Rainier Biogas and local dairies. The project is expected to be producing electricity from manure in mid-2012.

The magnetic influence sea mine was developed and used to great effect by the Germans between 1939-1945. Detecting changes in the earth's magnetic field as allied shipping passed nearby, mines could detonate accurately with devastating results. Lying below the waves, they were almost undetectable. The Allies developed an ingenious counter to this new threat; a series of copper electromagnetic coils could be built into the steel hulls of shipping to alter, and effectively reduce or negate the magnetic signature of the ship using electric current. This method was called coiling. A second, and less effective but cheaper, method was called wiping which involved ships being subjected to an external but temporary electromagnetic field to induce and alter the hull's magnetic field. The unit of measurement for magnetic field is the Gauss, and the name adopted for the process to alter magnetic field was degaussing.

 

However, to do this efficiently, there needed to be a system to measure the magnetic signature of vessels and actively work to tune the signature. And this is the purpose of this facility at Piers Cellars.

 

Known locally as the camera room, this facility at MOD Piers Cellars is a scientific time capsule with roots back to the Second World War. The first reference I may have found is from 1945 when there was an Admiralty proposal to "take over A/S Fixed Defence Station at Pier Cellars, Cawsand Bay as sea experimental station for Admiralty Research Laboratory" (ADM 1/22326).

 

Where were the cameras?

 

Operated by QinetiQ as one of 15 MOD-owned facilities across the UK through the Long Term Partnering Agreement (LTPA), Piers Cellars is a historic and still relevant site for the gathering of magnetic data. The site is described on the T3E website as providing "electromagnetic ranging of ships and submarines. An electromagnetic 20m open sea range is located at Pier Cellars. In addition, there is an electromagnetic 9m open sea range at Weymouth. These ranges automatically gather magnetic signatures of vessels entering and leaving Plymouth and Portsmouth Harbours.

 

The site is still MOD owned and operated by QinetiQ, although the camera room has lain empty for over 30 years.

Natural arch developed in Jurassic sandstones in Utah, USA.

 

These are eolian sandstones of the Navajo Sandstone, a thick, Mesozoic-aged unit representing ancient sand dune deposits. The Navajo is a prominent cliff-forming unit in much of western America. The coloration is from hematite (Fe2O3 - iron oxide). Laterally-equivalent units are known by other names, but are all the same deposit: Glen Canyon Sandstone, Nugget Sandstone, and Aztec Sandstone.

 

Rock arches are rare features - they form by differential weathering and erosion of many different types of rocks, but often sandstone. If a creek or river passes underneath, it is a natural bridge. If no creek or river is present, it is a natural arch. Along lakeshores and ocean coastlines, they are called lake arches and sea arches. Very small erosional openings in rocks are called windows.

 

This example is Bowtie Arch, a pothole-type natural arch. It is not in Arches National Park, which is located northeast of here.
