as americans, we expect lots of space.
here are a few costs of that expectation:
- increased price of all goods needing to be shipped
- nationwide recycling infrastruture too expensive to implement
- bicycles not a realistic option for most
- dependence on oil hungry cars and their resultant pollution
- social isolation in 'bedroom communities'
- areas of severe dilapidation next to ones of gentrification.
3rd world conditions exist in the city of atlanta. the majority of people hop on the expressway and bypass it all when crossing town. it gets forgotten, ignored. the only important parts become the start and the destination, leaving all parts inbetween unseen. imagine what would happen if we cared about our journey.
we have used oil as an alternative to developing a dense nation.
now that oil is a premium and what we've created is permanent.
we're addicted, and rightfully so. how to fix?
