Definitely Dreaming ... Week 42 Dreaming of ...

Well it would be nice to jet off somewhere, just for a change :)

And yes, the gull was there. It had been sitting on top the Colonnade, and yippy, I got it as it took off.

Definitely on the lookout for something, or someone...

Definitely went extreme with this one. I never saw a gas station in a waterway before. I was equally fascinated and horrified...

HSS!

The longer you wait for something, the more you appreciate it when you get it… because anything worth having is definitely worth waiting for.

Definitely the best place (so far - based on my experience) for aurora in Lofoten

Definitely a bad hair day. Taken on an extremely cold windy day at the Burlington Ship Canal. The wind was blowing me around as well as the ducks.

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Definitely an interesting, diverse day in NE Kansas today.

After a fantasy football soiree in Lawrence, I decided to head out and managed five trains on three lines, over the course of about two hours. Not bad!

Last up was the UP 1983 east rolling along the Kansas Sub between Midland and Lawrence. This was on the head end of the UEUMPL-10, a loaded ethanol train that runs from Doulom, NE - Peach, TX.

. . . definitely not mickey mouse . . .

i'm pretty sure this scene qualifies as #WEIRDNESS

it's jaxx, our weird & wonderful German Shepherd looking through our 'fence board cut-outs', we cut the holes in so he can see what's going on outside our yard,

sweet, funny & off the wall #WEIRDNESS indeed . . .

perhaps a wee bit creepy too?.

i can always tell when someone has spotted him, when i hear uncontrolled laughing on the other side of the fence

it's a joy for everyone who see him there,

make me smile every day!

hope it made you smile too! :)

Definitely the highlight of yesterday for me was encountering my first Queen Butterfly since 2013... I saw four that year and none since!

My friend Karen had texted me the day before, telling me she'd seen one on the Jeff Friend Trail on Fort Morgan road, so I headed down there yesterday morning...and en route, she called to say she was there with it again!

It was very skittish and led us on a merry chase...this is the best shot I got before it disappeared...I may return in search of it today...such a lovely rarity for this area!

See below for a better shot from 2013...

For Definitely Dreaming theme of leaves and for the October 2023: A month in 31 photos. My Gingko tree has just sprouted its new spring leaves and enjoyed the large dump of rain we have had over the last couple of days. Another 40mm following the 30mm yesterday. Last year Victoria had some extensive flooding in October. I hope that doesn't repeat this year. Using my lensbaby for that lovely edge blur.

Definitely not a typical migrant through Ohio, but a pleasant surprise when this bird walked the beach near one of my favorite shorebird hangouts. Join me photographing Ohio Shorebirds this month!

Definitely a theme of greedy waterbirds in March's sketch. Nice to get a Red Kite in as we don't see that many around here.

FOUR OR MORE is the topic for Tuesday 20th June, Group Our Daily Challenge.

Definitely Mack's favorite time of the week since I've been home. He still has to wear an e-collar pretty much constantly so he doesn't shred the area above his right eye. It's healing and now that I'm home he's getting oral Apoquel to help with the itching. It was good for both of us to see him outside and coneless.

As always, Ella was invited and encouraged to come outside, but as always, she declined. I'm really, really going to have to work on getting some springtime photos of her outside too.

DD Week 1 of 52 | Something Healthy

Ok so I've said no projects and I didn't start any in 2019 (maybe a phone 365 that got nowhere)...still have a 100X to complete from 2018. My Flickr friends know how absent I was in the last couple of years as normal life takes over my creative life. But sometimes I'm prone to making the odd rash/spur of the moment moments...this is definitely one of them and here I am staring down the barrel of my third P52 (2 incomplete). My thinking...365 is way too big and unrealistic to attempt...100X well I've still got one going that I'm committed to completing at some point...then 52...seems doable/possible, (my brain in holiday mode says...just wait till my brain gets back to work next week) so here we are.

This is a project I was inspired to start by ajhaysom when I saw his post...thanks Andrew :)

Seems berries are the favourites this week's theme and they are my favourite still life subjects especially frozen berries (how could I resist). This shot is the last of a series of twenty plus shots, starting without a tripod (resulting in blurry images...duh) then rushed to set up my tripod...but shooting 32ºC weather by the open door for light, chances were I'm not going to win. So as you can see the berries were losing their icy prettiness (as you can see with some of the berries) but I'm still pretty happy with this result.

Australian sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) responds to the result of foraging in the sands of Currumbin Creek estuary. Note the pale puff of sulphur on the ear coverlets — these are not readily seen.

Castel Sant’Angelo was definitely the place to shoot this past trip to Rome. And no wonder why: the area is beautiful, the details on all the sculptures are intricate and the bridge with the river flowing is just gorgeous. Once the sun is down, the place is doubtlessly better to explore, since there aren’t a lot of tourists and the darkness adds a layer of mystery, which is clearly visualized in the picture.

It was my last day in Rome, myself and the fellow photographer Emanuele met a couple of hours before the sunset and planned to shoot from the top of the Vittorio Emmanuel II Monument. The sight offers a great terrace for a panorama over the city of Rome, plus there is an elevator that can get you even higher. When we got up there, I took some shots, however the view was not as I expected and the pictures were not coming out as I envisioned them. We quickly decided to change the location and drove to Sant’Angelo to make it to the sunset. After we managed to get there just in time, I wandered around and moved my tripod quite a lot, trying to find the perfect spot and it was freezing but it was worth it since I was very happy with how the pictures came out. I can only imagine how awesome it would be from the top of Sant’Angelo, which I hope to shoot on my next trip there.

Being there for more than two hours and capturing the same scene in different time periods, without changing the composition at all, I was able to combine the sunset shot and the blue hour shot. By blending the sunset and the blue hour I managed to grasp the rays from the sun, the city lights, the blue sky and the longer exposure for the water. This combination of several exposures shot at different time, I believe, has helped me to create a more complete shot.

Regarding the technical part of the image, luminosity masking and free hand painting over the different layers was done in photoshop. Also some color correction was applied in order for the different shots to match the colors of one another as well as sharpening and noise reduction. Finally, I cloned out some garbage from the water.

Covid 19 has definitely created many challenges for me this year including having to move all of my college courses online for the year here in California. While this requirement has caused more than a few headaches for me, it has also provided a unique opportunity. Since all of my classes are now online, I am able to continue to teach regardless of where I am…as long as I have my laptop with me and reliable wifi.

So last month, I took my laptop, packed up the car, and headed off to visit my sister and her family in Arkansas. For 2.5 weeks, I shot forests and waterfalls throughout the Ozarks before venturing further down the state to the Ouachita National Forest and finally further south to the swamps of Southern Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. I had a fantastic time shooting in all sorts of weather (lots of rain and thunderstorms) with leaves changing from the Northern part of the state in Bentonville on towards the South by the time I left.

While I shot some of the swamps in the South on my own, I did meet up with Greg Boratyn toward the end of my trip and together we rented a canoe and explored some of the great Cypress forests in and around Louisiana while we were down there. We also took a couple of boat tours and were fascinated to learn how lanes were cut in these swamps during the late 1800’s to allow the steam ships to travel from town to town as some the areas were far too swampy for roads. No alligators on this trip since the temperatures dipped into the low 40’s when I was there. (They do something called “brumation” when it gets cold?)

Finally, a huge thank you to David Thompson who posted the first Autumn In The Bayou shots I had ever seen. I had no idea that cypress trees changed color in the Fall and probably wouldn’t have thought of visiting the great swamps of the Southern US at all until I came across some of his galleries on his website a couple of years ago.

Definitely a first for me, I was watching a new spot for Kingfishers when not 1 but 2 stoats shot across the lake in front of me. It all happened so fast I'm not sure how I managed to get this shot.

This is Mo, a cat from work. This is Mo in the sink, getting a bath. This is Mo, rather ticked off.

Maybe it was the fact that he was soaked. Maybe it was the fact that people were laughing at his expression. Maybe it was the fact that he had to wait an extra minute in there while I focused and took his picture.

Maybe it was all of the above.

Taken with my Hasselblad 500 C/M.

Definitely going through my blue period.
