This dove (or pigeon, the dove's cousin), was nibbling the fresh seeds at the base of the stems, straight off the branch. I took quite a number of photos with the bird facing west, then, suddenly, it made a 180 degree turn, right on the branch. It flapped its wings, ascended and turned with the control of a masterful athlete. I captured one of the last flaps of its wings, in the millisecond it landed back on the branch, now facing east.

Yasukuni Shrine (靖国神社 Yasukuni Jinja?) is a Shinto shrine located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. It is dedicated to the kami (spirits) of soldiers and others who died fighting on behalf of the Emperor of Japan. Currently, its Book of Souls lists the names of over 2,466,000 enshrined men and women whose lives were dedicated to the service of Imperial Japan, particularly to those killed in wartime.
The shrine is a source of considerable controversy. Of the almost 2.5 million enshrined, 1,068 have been convicted of war crimes by a post World War II court. The most high-profile cases include the 14 convicted Class-A war criminals ; that are enshrined at Yasukuni. Furthermore, the Yūshūkan——a shrine-owned history museum——has been accused of containing some revisionism in its accounts of Japan's actions in World War II, as well as glorifying Japan's aggressive militaristic past.[5][6] Visits to the shrine by Cabinet members, and various Prime Ministers in particular, have been the cause of protests at home as well as abroad. China, North Korea, South Korea and Taiwan have protested against various visits since 1985.

Chizhov bridgehead, Voronezh: history, memorial complex.
The Chizhov bridgehead in Voronezh is a famous memorial complex. It is dedicated to the events of World War II. Directly to the Voronezh soldiers who defended the city from Nazi invaders.
The Chizhov bridgehead in Voronezh was inaugurated on the eve of Victory Day in 1975. Then they were just about to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the defeat of the Nazi troops. The monument was erected near the Vogresovsky bridge on the territory of the former urban settlement, which was called Chizhovka.
However, all the work at the Chizhovsky bridgehead memorial complex in Voronezh was finally completed only 10 years later. By the 40th anniversary of the Victory in World War II, the construction of the memorial was completed.
He was erected in the Leninsky district of the city. The authors of the main project were sculptors-spouses Tolmachev and architect Selyutin.
The Chizhovsky bridgehead in Voronezh is a memorial complex that consists of a mass grave and the Hall of Memory, on the walls of which the names of all the defenders of Voronezh during the war were knocked out. And also included all subsequent work on the repair and improvement of the memorial building in the municipal program, just dedicated to the preservation and development of culture and art in Voronezh. As part of this project, funds were regularly allocated to maintain the memorial in good condition. Therefore, today in Voronezh, excursions, as a rule, do not pass by this memorial.
Historically, the Chizhov bridgehead was located on the right bank of the city suburbs. The outcome of the battle for Voronezh in 1942 was decided precisely in these places. Units of the Soviet army stood here, as they say, to the last, not letting the enemy go forward. As a result, they managed to hold out until the city was completely liberated and recapture Voronezh from the Nazi invaders. Despite the fact that the enemy forces significantly exceeded the strength and armament of the Red Army.
Especially distinguished in the battle for Voronezh in 1942, a militia detachment. It consisted entirely of local residents, for whom it was especially important and crucial to hold out in battles for their hometown.
The battles for Chizhovka hit the pages of the history of the Great Patriotic War as an example of the heroism and courage of Soviet soldiers and officers.
Soviet troops recaptured the bridgehead in August 1942. Since then, in fact, the battle for this key position has not stopped round the clock for 204 days. Until the complete liberation of the city, which took place on January 25, 1943. Since then, this date is annually celebrated in the regional center as the city’s new birthday. Indeed, if the city had not been liberated then, it is not known what modern Voronezh would be like.
Moreover, it was precisely in the Chizhovka region that the German fascist troops suffered a crushing blow in early January. It was from here that the real liberation of Voronezh began. The so-called Voronezh-Kastoren offensive operation, which culminated in the success of the Soviet Army.
It is known that in this mass grave in the Chizhovka region the bodies of more than 10 thousand participants in those bloody events rest. However, most names are still unknown. At the moment, only 3,545 people buried in the mass grave have been reliably able to determine the names and military ranks.
718 names are listed in the official book of the eternal memory of the memorial complex in Voronezh "Chizhov bridgehead". On the territory of the Voronezh region this is the largest burial place of the Great Patriotic War. Therefore, it is here that commemorative events dedicated to the heroes of that war take place annually.
In the battles for Voronezh, many Soviet soldiers and officers distinguished themselves. But history has preserved the names of only some of them.
If you come to the monuments of Voronezh, visit the Chizhov bridgehead, then they will tell you about the feat of the deputy commander of the battalion Georgy Lyulin, who by 1943 rose to the rank of senior lieutenant. His act, according to modern historians, played a significant role in the outcome of this battle.
At the decisive moment of the battle, Lyulin picked up the red flag and launched an attack under a hail of fragments and enemy bullets. It was his act that made the battalion take over, which seized the building of the brick factory, hoisting the red banner above it, which was in Lyulin’s hands. The hero himself in this battle died tragically.
He was buried here, at the site of his last battle. In the courtyard of the Voronezh brick factory. The soldiers and officers of the 333rd regiment, in which Lulin served, sent a letter to the local authorities with a request to perpetuate the memory of the hero, calling him one of the streets in the area of Chizhovka. And so they did. You can visit this street today.
It was in these places that the most fierce battles took place in the Voronezh direction. If you go on a trip to Voronezh, they will tell you that the confrontation between Soviet and German troops often came to hand-to-hand fights. Huge losses were on each side.
Historians who studied archival documents of that period found that in just three separate days of fighting, the 40th Army lost more than 17 thousand people wounded, killed and missing. Among them were fighters, political workers and commanders. All who participated in these difficult battles.
The current state of the memorial
It is worth recognizing that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the memorial complex was in a deplorable state for a long period of time. Funds for its overhaul and maintenance after 1991 were practically not allocated.
Radically, the situation began to change in 2012. By that time, the state of the memorial was simply critical. The huge marble slabs that framed the mass grave could collapse at any moment. Three million rubles were urgently needed for restoration work.
Only in such a stalemate situation did the money be found, and the reconstruction of the memorial complex began.
Since 2009, another commemorative sign has appeared nearby in this place. In honor of Dmitry Donskoy, a stone was laid in the foundation at this site of the temple.

Sher Singh, Executive Director of GAISS, shared our Sikh Guru's inspiring stories with the Sangat and encouraged everyone to be conscious in their efforts to take care of Mother Earth. Seeds were also distributed to students and their families for planting.

Holston's signature cubist/abstractionist style has evolved over a career spanning more than 25 years. His career as a painter and printmaker began with years of self-study, augmented by study with renowned artists Marcos Blahove in Washington and Richard Goetz in Santa Fe, N.M. Holston also attended Howard University and Montgomery College in Maryland, and enjoyed invaluable advice and encouragement from Harlem Renaissance artists Lois Mailou Jones and James Wells.
Three basic elements are dominant in Holston's work: the geometric figure, color, and line. For the artist, color and line set the mood of the painting and also serve as the guide for the meaning of each individual work. Holston is strongly drawn to the French Fauvist painters' application of primary colors as a means of expression. He reduces his figures to the most fundamental essence of form and design and, in combination with bold color and simple lines, he produces a most expressive message. His subjects are individuals of strong, solid dignity within the African American community. The figures in his paintings go beyond a simple representation of individuals, and instead speak of the varied types within a rich and complex culture focused on living and experiencing the joys and dramas of everyday life. Holston's style and subject matter is grounded in the Harlem Renaissance tradition, and strongly influenced by the works of Jacob Lawrence, William H. Johnson and Charles Alston, though the artist's style remains uniquely his own with a strong, individualist voice.

Duncan Phillips’s former home—and additions to it—in Washington’s historic Dupont Circle neighborhood provides a unique setting for the growing collection of over 6,000 works. Following Phillips’s unconventional approach to exhibitions, The Phillips Collection galleries are frequently rearranged to facilitate new conversations between artworks and fresh experiences for visitors.
HISTORY
“Sorrow all but overwhelmed me,” Duncan Phillips wrote. “Then I turned to my love of painting for the will to live.”
Duncan Phillips (1886-1966) was the son of Major Duncan Clinch Phillips, a Pittsburgh businessman and Civil War veteran, and Eliza Laughlin Phillips, whose father was a banker and co-founder of Jones and Laughlin Steel Company. The family moved to Washington, DC, in winter 1895-96.
Duncan was close to his older brother, Jim; Jim postponed attending college for two years so that he and Duncan could attend Yale University together. The brothers moved from DC to an apartment in New York in 1914. Duncan wrote extensively on art and published his first book, The Enchantment of Art, in 1914. Duncan’s passion for art was fueled by trips to Europe in 1911 and 1912 and visits to the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, along with friendships in New York with artists Augustus Vincent Tack, who became a lifelong friend, and American impressionist painter Julian Alden Weir. In 1916 the brothers convinced their parents to set aside $10,000 annually to allow them to assemble a collection of contemporary American painting for the family.
Soon after, tragedy struck the Phillips family. Major Duncan Phillips died suddenly in 1917 from a heart condition and James died from the flu epidemic in 1918. To cope with these stunning blows, Duncan turned to the restorative quality of art. “Sorrow all but overwhelmed me,” he later wrote. “Then I turned to my love of painting for the will to live.” He and his mother founded the museum in late 1918. It was originally called the Phillips Memorial Art Gallery, and opened it to the public in fall of 1921. In a specially designed room added onto the second floor of the family home, they showed selections from their growing 237-work collection that now included examples by European artists, reflecting Duncan Phillips’s pioneering idea of creating a museum in the nation’s capital where one could encounter the art of the past and the present on equal terms. As the collection grew, the family moved out of their Dupont Circle home to a new residence in 1930, allowing the entire house to become a dedicated space for the museum.
Duncan Phillips married painter Marjorie Acker (1894-1985) in 1921, shortly before the museum opened, and she became his partner in developing The Phillips Collection. Born in Bourbon, Indiana, and raised in New York State, she was encouraged by her uncles―painters Gifford and Reynolds Beal―to pursue art; she studied at the Art Students League in New York City. Duncan and Marjorie met at an exhibition of his collection at The Century Club in New York in late 1920. After they were married, Marjorie painted almost every morning, ran the household, and served as Associate Director of the museum. She helped him gain insight into the artist’s process, and over the course of their lifetime together they collected nearly 2,500 works of art. When Duncan died in 1966, Marjorie became the museum director, continuing to develop close relationships with artists and the artistic community of DC. She held that position for six years.
From the outset, the vision for The Phillips Collection was “an intimate museum combined with an experiment station.” As a collector, Duncan Phillips was noted for his willingness to deviate from the art museum standard of displaying works together based on shared nationality and geography, interpreting modernism as a dialogue between past and present. He collected the work of his contemporaries at a time when art that did not follow traditional, academic standards was not widely accepted as aesthetically and culturally valuable. This philosophy of taking risks allowed for Phillips to be the first to collect and exhibit artists who were not well known at the time, such as Milton Avery, Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Jacob Lawrence, Grandma Moses, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Rufino Tamayo.

UNITED BRETHERN CHURCH
According to Col. Cyrus P. B. Sarchet's History of Guernsey County, 1911, there were 4 United Brethren Churches in the county, one of them being located in Senecaville. However, after talking to many senior citizens, we were unable to learn where it might have been located.
THE WESLEYAN METHODIST CHURCH
Many of the early church records containing the history of the Wesleyan Methodist Church have been lost.
The church was built in 1842 or 1843 by slaves freed from the south.
The Wesleyan Methodist denomination was in sympathy with Abolitionists and anti-slavery groups. Many of the early churches, along with the Senecaville Church, were stop offs from the underground railroads.
