The ancient city owes its name to the most important Macedonian sanctuary dedicated to Zeus (Dios, "of Zeus"), leader of the gods who dwelt on Mount Olympus; as recorded by Hesiod's Catalogue of Women, Thyia, daughter of Deucalion, bore Zeus two sons, Magnes and Makednos, eponyms of Magnetes and Macedonians, who dwelt in Pieria at the foot of Mount Olympus.[4] Hence from very ancient times, a large altar had been set up for the worship of Olympian Zeus and his daughters, the Muses, in a unique environment characterised by rich vegetation, towering trees, countless springs and a navigable river. For this reason Dion was the "sacred place" of the Ancient Macedonians. It was the place where the kings made splendid sacrifices to celebrate the new year of the Macedonian calendar at the end of September. In the Spring, purification rites of the army and victory feasts were held.
The first mention of Dion in history comes from Thucydides, who reports that it was the first city reached by the Spartan general Brasidas after crossing from Thessaly into Macedon on his way through the realm of his ally Perdiccas II during his expedition against the Athenian colonies of Thrace in 424 BC. According to Diodorus Siculus, it was Archelaus I who, at the end of the 5th century BC when the Macedonian state acquired great power and emerged onto the stage of history, gave the city and its sanctuary their subsequent importance by instituting a nine-day festival of games that included athletic and dramatic competitions in honor of Zeus and the Muses, whose organisation was overseen by the Macedonian kings themselves.
Philip II and Alexander the Great celebrated victories here, and Alexander assembled his armies and performed magnificent sacrifices here on the eve of his campaign to Asia in 334BC.[5]
Many ancient authors speak of the sculptural bronze masterpiece by Lysippos made for Alexander depicting 25 mounted companions who fell at the Battle of the Granicus and later taken to Rome by Metellus.
A city was built adjacent to the sacred sites that acquired monumental form during the reigns of Alexander the Great's successors and Cassander took a great interest in the city erecting strong walls and public buildings, so that in Hellenistic times Dion was renowned far and wide for its fortification and splendid monuments. Dion and its sanctuary was destroyed in 219BC by Aetolian invaders but was immediately rebuilt by Philip V. Many of the dedications from the sanctuary that had been destroyed were buried in pits, including royal inscriptions and treaties, and these have been discovered recently.

It fell to the Romans in 169BC and the city was given a new lease of life in 32/31BC when Octavian founded the Colony of COLONIA JULIA AUGUSTA DIENSIS here. It experienced its second heyday during the reigns of 2nd- and 3rd-century AD Roman emperors who were fond of Alexander the Great. Dion's final important period was in the 4th and 5th centuries AD when it became the seat of a bishopric. It was abandoned following major earthquakes and floods.

Yes, we did it. And we have plenty of blisters to prove! We whinged, moaned and cursed but at the end we walked 100km in impressive 26h44min59s non-stop through the night to Brighton. Only 288 teams (out of 502 who set off in Petersfield) crossed the finish line and we are quite proud of our achievement as, according to the organisers, our time is the new event record in the category "fastest slightly overweight Brazilians in their early thirties with a strange attraction for lycra (but only some of them!)". Actually, we could've cut down the time by 15min but, keeping a Brazilian tradition, we were late for the big day.
But we didn't walk the equivalent of almost 2.5 marathons (and a complete ascent of Ben Nevis!) just because we like to punish our feet for not being good enough to play football professionally. We did it to raise money for Oxfam and The Gurkha Welfare Trust.

RAF Hethel airfield was built in 1942 for use by the U.S.A.A.F as A.A.F Station 114 and was initially used as a staging airfield for units of the Twelfth Air Force deploying to North Africa, at this time, RAF Hethel was also used as a training airfield for other B-24 Liberator Groups in the Second Air Division of the Eighth Air Force.
After the base was fully complete it was assigned to the 389th Bombardment Group (Heavy) and being part of the Second Air Division it was equipped with B-24 Liberator's. After arriving in England, a detachment was sent to Libya, where it began operations on 9th July 1943. The detachment flew missions to Crete, Sicily, Italy, Austria, and Rumania.
The group received a DUC for the detachment’s participation in the famed low-level attack against oil refineries at Ploesti on 1st Aug 1943. For his action during the same operation, 2d Lt Lloyd H Hughes was awarded the Medal of Honor - refusing to turn back although gasoline was streaming from his flak-damaged plane, Lt Hughes flew at low altitude over the blazing target area and bombed the objective; the plane crashed before Hughes could make the forced landing that he attempted after the bomb run.
From October 1943 the 389th Bomb Group flew operations into occupied Europe and Germany attacking strategic targets such as the shipbuilding yards at Vegesack, industrial areas of Berlin, oil facilities at Merseburg, factories at Munster, railroad yards at Sangerhausen, and V-weapon sites at Pas de Calais. The group also took part in “Big Week” between the 20th and 25th February 1944 which saw the Eighth Air Force launch a series of raids against German aircraft production sites, and also flew tactical missions in support of the D-Day landings and the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and January 1945. Having lost 107 aircraft during its campaign, the 389th flew its last combat mission on 25th April 1945, returning to the U.S.A on 30th May.
Like many of the Eighth Air Force stations in the immediate aftermath of World War Two, RAF Hethel was handed over for use by the RAF where it was used by Polish Squadrons equipped with the Mustang. In mid-1947, RAF Hethel became a Personnel Transit Centre but was transferred to RAF Technical Training Command. However, as the RAF was scaled down, the station was finally closed in 1948 and was finally sold by the Air Ministry in 1964.
Today the site is used by Lotus Cars who built a factory on the site in 1966 where some of the former runways and taxiways were converted for use as a test track. A small museum dedicated to the former airfield has been created nearby. This museum is a commemoration of the contribution made by the 389th Heavy Bombardment Group and is housed in the original Chapel/Gymnasium building - the only major building from the camp area of RAF Hethel to remain. The building features an original mural of Christ on the cross in the chapel and of a map of Europe in the Chaplin’s quarters next door. The exhibits include memorabilia, uniforms, decorations, combat records and photographs. There are two recently reconstructed Nissen Huts which have extended the display space and added facilities for visitors, one of these also includes artefacts from the nearby 466th Bomb Group at RAF Attlebridge.

St Cybi's was dedicated to the 6th Century Cornish St Cybi who crossed the Bristol Channel and sailed up the Usk, landing at Llangybbi. After a confrontation with a local chieftain involving a couple of miracles, he was granted the land for the church. The tower, nave and chancel date from the 13/4th Centuries, with 17th Century fittings such as the font. The church is noted for its mediaeval wall paintings, including the famous "Christ of the Trades" or "Sunday Christ". Unfortunately they have been badly damaged, possible by Cromwell's Roundheads who tore through Monmouthshire destroying all signs of "idolatry" like a 17th Century Taliban.

Shot in Pacific Rim National Park, on vancouver Island in British Columbia. I watched this guy fishing on a little rock island for about 20 minutes. He didn't seem too concerned about the incoming tide that surrounded the island and the wave action that grew with intensity.

In First Place Taking the First Pole Position of the Weekend was (Morgan Quinn) in his Formula Ford 1600 Kent with a Best Lap Time of 50.561 and a Top Speed of 86.00mph. Brilliant Work there Morgan Fantastic Lap to Start the Weekend of with a Bang.
In Second Place was (Lucas Romanek) in his Van Diemen JL13 with a Best Lap Time of 50.594 and a Top Speed of 85.95mph. Amazing Drive there Lucas Fantastic Work and a Very Good Spot on the Front Row for Race 1.

In Second Place was the Pairing of (A Bradley and D Bradley) in their BMW E36 with a Best Lap Time of 52.621 and a Top Speed of 82.64mph. Really Well Driven Gentlemen Very Close to Darren looking Forward to a Competitive First Race Between you All.

Next Up was the Track Day Championship and with Another Massive Grid of 32 Cars from All Different Makes such as BMW Volkswagen Renault Ford and Caterham it was Going to be a Dynamic Qualifying Session with Many Different Cars and Drivers All Battling for Positions thought the Qualifying Session.

In First Place taking the Victory and The Fastest Lap was (Scott Parkin) in his VW Golf TDI with a Best Lap Time of 54.419 and a Top Speed of 79.90mph. Congratulations Scott a Brilliant Pole Lap and Fantastic Car Control thought Every Corner.
In Second Place was (Chris Payne) in his Caterham Supersport with a Best Lap Time of 54.540 and an Average Speed of 79.73mph. Awesome Drive there from Chris Keeping up at The Front with Scott and Trading Fastest Laps thought the Qualifying Session. I Think both of them are going to put on a Brilliant Display of Racing Later.

In Second Place was (Chris Payne) in his Caterham Supersport with a Best Lap Time of 54.397 and an Average Speed of 70.35mph. Amazing Drive there Chris Really Working Hard to Keep that 2nd Position while Also Fighting Hard to take 1st away from Scott at the front during some Laps.
In Third Place was (John Lyne) in his BMW E36 328i with a Best Lap Time of 55.309 and an Average Speed of 68.87mph. Congratulations John P3 with a Very Clean and Perfectly Controlled Drive thought, Its so Great to See a New Face on the Podium and Taking Victory. His Family and Close Friends Will be Very Proud of Him Indeed.
Another Incredible Race Today with the Likes of Scott Chris and John All Taking Home Superb Victories and no Doubt some Fantastic Memories from the Days Events too.
A Big Congratulations to both the Pairing of Keen and Roberts too who also put in a Monstrous Qualifying Lap to Land P3 on the Gird. Finishing the Race in 8th is not too Bad but I'm sure they have a lot of Work to-do Back at the Workshop and Will Come Back Next Year with an even more Competitive Honda Ready to Go.

Now it was Time for The Penultimate Qualifying and Race of the Day for the Track Day Trophy. Just like with the Previous Track Day Championship Many of the Same cars that Competed Before Also Entered This Race Giving Some Drivers a Second change to Show their Skills and Talents on the Race Track.
Lets take a Look at Qualifying and See Who will be on Pole This Time.
In First Place Taking Pole Position and The Fastest Lap was The Pairing of (R. Parkin and S. Parkin) in their VW Golf with a Best Lap Time of 53.795 and a Top Speed of 80.83mph. Incredible Work by both of the Parkin Pair as Scott Parkin Previously Won in Super Cup and Now he takes His Second Pole Position of the Day! Brilliant Driving.
In Second Place was (Chris Kirby) in his Caterham 1.6 Super Sport with a Best Lap Time of 53.863 and a Top Speed of 80.73mph. Brilliant Driving there Chris Keeping the Two Parkins on their Toes and Almost Taking Away Pole Position from them by Just 0.068 at The Checkered Flag.
In Third Place was the Pair of (Palk and Pottinger) in their Reno Clio with a Best Lap Time of 54.757 and a Top Speed of 79.41mph. Very Well Done both Palk and Pottinger on a Well Deserved and Defended P3 Finish by Less than a Second to Start on the Second Row for The Race.

Enduro KA -(Qualifying)
After a Long Days Racing and with Night Falling Fast The Headlights of The Enduro KA'S Began to Illuminate the Indy Circuit.
Every Part of the Track was a Wash with Darkness and The Only Thing Illuminating the Way for Each Driver was The Bright Headlights and LED'S Fitted to Each Car with some Teams and Driver Trying their Luck on the KA'S Standard Headlights to Brighten their Way to Victory.
A Silent Hum Came From the Engines as they Raced Around the Indy Circuit with Each Driver Pushing Hard to Set the Fastest Time Possible.
The Tension in the Air was Electrifying as Drivers Danced their Cars Through Traffic and Had Small Battles with One Another Trying to see what their Opponents Tactics were and How Brave each of Them Dare Go in Terms of Pace.
It Wasn't Long before Each Driver Began to Put their Right Foot Hard Down and Push their
73BHP KA To its Limits Trying Desperately to Grab Hold of Pole Position Ahead of Sundays Intense 8 Hour 500 Minute Race.
After a Really Hectic Day of Both Qualifying and Racing Lets Find Out Who Took The Last Pole of Today and Who Will be Starting on The Front Row for Tomorrow's 8 Hour Endurance Race.
In First Place Taking the Victory and pole Position was Team (IP Racings) (Adam Blair / Scott Parkin / Oliver Wilmot / Mark Witherington) in their Ford KA with a Best Lap Time of 1:02.845 and a Top Speed of 69.19mph. Congratulations IP Racing Fantastic Work and a Super Start to the Endurance Race at The Very Front of The Grid.
In Second Place Following Closely Behind by Just 0.261 Seconds was Team (JTR) Elliot Mason / Nick Tandy / David Mason / James Rhodes in their Ford KA with a Best Lap Time of 1:03.106 and a Top Speed of 68.90mph. Dedicated in 1878, carved in Italy and erected on a base of Georgia marble, the monument honors anonymous enlisted men, represented by Augusta native Private Berry Benson at the top. It also honors Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, T.R.R. Cobb and W.H.T. Walker, whose life-size statues surround the base.

CHAPEL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Part of the 1930s extension and planned to be the new Lady Chapel of the reoriented Cathedral, the Chapel of the Holy Spirit is dominated by the great Te Deum stained glass window by Christopher Webb.
At the top of the Te Deum window is a dove whilst at its centre is Christ in Glory surrounded by prophets, martyrs and the faithful through the ages. The rich colours and beautiful detailed figures are characteristic of Webb and this majestic window is a beautiful and awesome representation of God's work on earth.
A Dove can also be seen above the entrance door to the Chapel and around the entrance are angels. The vaulted ceiling is carved with roses, vines, lilies and sunflower motifs. The design of the Chapel was inspired by the 700 year old Lady Chapel at Llandaff Cathedral, Wales.
The wooden stalls and the canopies over them were designed by Sir Ninian Comper.
Below the window is the altar and behind it is a Reredos - screen - which was given to the Cathedral by the Freemasons of Sheffield after the First World War in memory of those who gave their lives.
This memorial is dedicated to
all those Australians who served
in Vietnam from 1962 to 1973.
The ‘wall of words’ highlights the
colourful and distinctive language developed there. A black
granite memorial stone carries the badges of the three
Armed Forces and a suspended granite ring contains a
scroll bearing the names of those Australians who died in
the conflict. The sheltering shape and calming water offer
respite to visitors.
The memorial was dedicated on the fifth anniversary of the
Welcome Home Parade for veterans. Vietnam Veterans’
Remembrance Day is commemorated on 18 August; the
anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. During this battle,
D Company faced a Viet Cong force more than 20 times
larger than the 108 Australians. D Company became only
the second Army unit in Australian military history to be
awarded a United States Presidential Unit Citation.
With no dedicated snow-clearing equipment a snow cover had closed the Fair Isle airstrip for 16 consecutive days.
At this point, with air temperatures rising to 3° Celsius and a thaw setting in, an attempt to speed up the melting process by spraying on sea water was made.

Hexham Abbey is dedicated to St Andrew. Originally built in AD 674, the Abbey was built up during the 12th Century into its current form, with additions around the turn of the 20th Century. Since the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1537, the Abbey has been the parish church of Hexham. In 2014 the Abbey regained ownership of its former monastic buildings, which had been used as Hexham magistrates' court, and subsequently developed them into a permanent Exhibition and Visitor centre, telling the story of the Abbey's history. Onsite there is also a Refectory Café and gift shop, catering to over 100,000 visitors each year.
There has been a church on the site for over 1300 years since Etheldreda, Queen of Northumbria made a grant of lands to St Wilfrid, Bishop of York c.674. Of Wilfrid's Benedictine abbey, which was constructed almost entirely of material salvaged from nearby Roman ruins, the Saxon crypt still remains; as does a frith stool, a 7th/8th century cathedra or throne. For a little while around that time it was the seat of a bishopric.
In the year 875 Halfdene (Halfdan Ragnarsson) the Dane ravaged the whole of Tyneside and Hexham Church was plundered and burnt to the ground.
About 1050 one Eilaf was put in charge of Hexham, although as treasurer of Durham, he probably never came there. Eilaf was instructed to rebuild Hexham Church which then lay in utter ruin. His son Eilaf II completed the work, probably building in the Norman style.
In Norman times Wilfrid's abbey was replaced by an Augustinian priory. The current church largely dates from c.1170–1250, built in the Early English style of architecture. The choir, north and south transepts and the cloisters, where canons studied and meditated, date from this period.
The east end was rebuilt in 1860. The Abbey was largely rebuilt during the incumbency of Canon Edwin Sidney Savage who came to Hexham in 1898 and remained until 1919. This mammoth project involved re-building the nave, whose walls incorporate some of the earlier church and the restoration of the choir. The nave was re-consecrated on 8 August 1908.
In 1996 an additional chapel was created at the east end of the north choir aisle. Named St Wilfrid's Chapel, it offers a place for prayer or quiet reflection.
