Construction: Aluminum Construction was performed by Trades and Applied Technology Program Aluminum Boat Building Program Class of 2008. Vessel was then completed and fitted out by the CSR and Welding Program staff and contractors
Purpose: The Chetlo will go into service at the Deep Bay Field Station north of Nanaimo and will be used with the marine research and training shellfish farm operated by the station. The vessel will be used for farming and research support, training students and giving tours.
Design and Sustainability - The vessel is an aluminum catamaran which will provide a safe and stable working platform for aquaculture, research and training operations. Design and operations are sensitive to shellfish farming’s strict requirements for marine environmental quality. The vessel uses 4-stroke Yamaha outboards that meet highest emission standards, and the diesel hydraulic system operates on bio-diesel and uses environmentally friendly hydraulic oil. The vessel has an onboard toilet with waste holding to insure that waste is not discharged into the environment.
Name: R.V. CHETLO “Chetlo” is the Chinook Jargon name for oyster and was suggested by VIU employee John Morgan in an naming contest. Chinook Jargon originated as a pidgin trade language of the Pacific Northwest, and spread quickly up the West Coast from modern Oregon to the regions now Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska It is related to, but not the same as, the aboriginal language of the Chinook people, upon which much of its vocabulary is based (From Wikipedia)

Pressure washing the old finish and dirt off the deck. I ended up getting a 3500 PSI pressure washer... that was fun :)
On deck accommodation for the three new deckers. On arrival, all the upper saloon seats were liberally coated in salt residue.
Deck M houses the twin torpedo launchers, flanking the turboshaft and vertical intermix chamber. We see the loading bay in its 2285 configuration, which allows cadets to be trained in manual loading. Later, however, Scotty is able to fire torpedoes remotely thanks to his automation system. Docking ports flank Launch Bays A and B, and life support equipment fills the remainder of the deck.

RIPTIDE was built in 1927 by the Schertzer Brothers Boat and Machine Company, then located on the north end of Lake Union at the foot of Stone Way in Seattle. She is 47 feet 1-inch long with a beam of 11 feet 10-inches and a draft of four feet. She is planked in port orford cedar riveted to white oak frames over a douglas fir backbone with western red cedar houses. At the time she was lifted out of the water in early April 2015 for her restoration, she weighed 24,000 pounds.
She was originally named NEREIAD, then, shortly thereafter, NOKARE. Her trunk cabin (the raised cabin aft of the pilothouse) was reportedly added (most likely extended) in 1933. By 1936, when owned by Russell G. Gibson, a Director of the Seattle Yacht club, she had been named RIPTIDE. Mr Gibson owned her through at least 1960.
RIPTIDE is a Coast Guard documented vessel and carries documentation number 226242 carved into the interior face of both port and starboard bilge stringers. She is documented at 17 net tons and 21 gross tons.
Her original engine may have been a Hall-Scott gasoline engine, but is as yet unknown. By 1959 she had an eight cylinder Chrysler Crown gas engine, a common engine of the time, most likely added in the late 1940's. That engine was removed in 1967 when RIPTIDE was re-powered by a 1967 Volvo MD-70A diesel engine. The Volvo engine was removed in early June 2015 and is being replaced by a Cummins 5.9 liter diesel of 210hp.
The first stage of her restoration began April 8th, 2015 when she was lifted out of the water at Port Townsend WA for hull and engine work by the Port Townsend Shipwright's Co-Op, and should be complete by the end of the first week in September.
