Said to commemorate the centenary of the Bard’s death in 1896, the fountain was a central landmark in the historic town of Dalkeith. As a symbol of the town's history from the very threshold of the 20th century, it has been a source of inspiration to me for a number of years. However, almost forgotten until recently, the Dalkeith Burns fountain has not always been looked upon so favourably.

In 1928, the fountain became an object of fierce controversy. Councillor James Cochrane moved a resolution to remove the fountain from its prominent High Street position to a more secluded spot. He argued, “in a new position it would not desecrate the finer human feelings as the design violates all the canons of art, beauty and good taste”. The majority of the local councillors had voted to remove it.

A petition against the council was signed by 562 residents and at a ratepayers meeting Councillor James Lean said: "I am not saying that the fountain is a fit memorial to the national bard. It is not. A fitting memorial does not exist in this or any other town. Burns does not require iron nor wood, nor stone, nor marble, nor alabaster... he is already enshrined in the hearts of the common people and for all time. It might be the fountain violates all canons of art but what opportunity has the average individual for studying art in any shape or form? If the councillors are concerned with the canons of art, the Burns fountain is the last place they should be considering. There are plenty of places in Dalkeith that violate the canons of all human decency, never mind the canons of art".

Councillor Lean’s impassioned and intelligent argument prevailed and the fountain remained in the High Street for a further 40 years, where it was always intended to be Dalkeith’s permanent memorial to Robert Burns

I would tell you about the things

They put me through

The pain I've been subjected to

But the Lord himself would blush

The countless feasts laid at my feet

Forbidden fruits for me to eat

But I think your pulse would start to rush

Now I'm not looking for absolution

Forgiveness for the things I do

But before you come to any conclusions

Try walking in my shoes

Try walking in my shoes

You'll stumble in my footsteps

Keep the same appointments I kept

If you try walking in my shoes

If you try walking in my shoes

Morality would frown upon

Decency look down upon

The scapegoat fate's made of me

But I promise now, my judge and jurors

My intentions couldn't have been purer

My case is easy to see

I'm not looking for a clearer conscience

Peace of mind after what I've been through

And before we talk of any repentance

Try walking in my shoes

Try walking in my shoes

You'll stumble in my footsteps

Keep the same appointments I kept

If you try walking in my shoes

If you try walking in my shoes

Try walking in my shoes

Now I'm not looking for absolution

Forgiveness for the things I do

But before you come to any conclusions

"The image of a Syrian child's lifeless body washed up on the shores of a Turkish beach this week brought the world to its knees. His name was Aylan Kurdi, and he was just three years old.

The sad reality is that Aylan was one among millions of desperate people forced to flee from war and persecution. The world is facing a global refugee crisis on a scale we've not seen since WWII, but Australia - our lucky country of a fair go for all - is not doing enough. We can do better to help these people.

The line at the United check-in counter--it was 90% foreigners, as was my flight to Chicago (where I caught a connecting flight to Atlanta), and since they were operating by American standards, they were all in line 2.5 hours early, which is earlier than most Japanese travelers. I had some massive reverse culture shock at the airport--not counting JET get-togethers, I hadn't seen that many gaijin in one place in nearly 11 months, since Tokyo Orientation.

I couldn't help but feel a bit disdainful, and even appalled, because the whole spectrum of American tourists was present, including some fairly snooty and snappy travelers...and there were girls wearing spaghetti-strap, stomach-revealing shirts, which is a big ダメ. For god's sake, if you travel to another country, especially when you know it's more conservative, at least have the decency to research that country's culture and customs, including the dress code. You just can't wear that stuff in Japan.

Cross Bones Graveyard

Cross Bones Graveyard was a mediaeval burial ground, situated in St Saviour’s parish, now Redcross Way SE1. There is a long established tradition that it was a final resting place for ‘Winchester Geese’, ie prostitutes, from the legalised brothels or 'stews' of Bankside. This dates back to the days when the Bishop of Winchester ran Bankside and licensed the ‘Geese’.

Stow, in his Survey of London in 1603, describes the burial site as being appointed to single women forbidden the rites of the church so long as they continued a sinful life. However, by Victorian times, when the area was stricken by poverty and disease, the site was used as a pauper’s burial ground.

Cross Bones Graveyard was finally closed in 1853 on the grounds that it was ‘completely overcharged with dead’ and that further burials were ‘inconsistent with a due regard for the public health and public decency’. A warehouse was built upon it.

Recent archaeological digs for the Jubilee Line extension have uncovered evidence of a highly overcrowded graveyard where bodies are piled up on top of each other and tests have shown that many of the bodies are women and children with diseases ranging from smallpox, TB and paget’s disease to osteoarthritis and vitamin D deficiency.

These are tributes placed by atavists keen on consecrating the ground and leaving the site untouched so the dead can finally rest in peace.

On a walk around the Addington Cemetery with a wonderful Flickr friend. February 13, 2016 Christchurch New Zealand.

There is so much damaged in the cemetery because of the earthquake we have had. It is such a pity as I don' think it will ever be fully repaired.

The Addington Cemetery was established in 1858 when the Scottish Presbyterians of St Andrew’s Church purchased land for a cemetery in Selwyn Street. Although not the first cemetery in Christchurch, Addington was in fact the first “public” cemetery, “being open to all persons of any religious community” and allowing the performance of any religious service “not contrary to public decency”.

The first burial took place on the 10th of November 1858. The cemetery has several persons of note buried within its grounds including activist Kate Sheppard, Christchurch Mayor Tommy Taylor and members of the pioneer family, the Deans.

Please, please have the decency not to take my idea or use my video without permission.

Well, this is my first ever moving image/ video I have ever created. We had a brief at Uni to produce a 25 second moving image to advertise shoes. A brand, a style, whatever. I chose converse, and I decided to go with how converse take you through life. So my idea was to show one guy going through the different stages of life wearing converse. I hope you like it! It got picked as the best from my class!

PEOPLE are PEOPLE / Depeche Mode

People are people so why should it be

You and I should get along so awfully

So we're different colours

And we're different creeds

And different people have different needs

It's obvious you hate me

Though I've done nothing wrong

I never even met you

So what could I have done

I can't understand

What makes a man

Hate another man

Help me understand

People are people so why should it be

You and I should get along so awfully

Help me understand

Now you're punching and you're kicking

And you're shouting at me

I'm relying on your common decency

So far it hasn't surfaced

But I'm sure it exists

It just takes a while to travel

From your head to your fist

I can't understand

What makes a man

Hate another man

Irony, humor, irreverence, and even anger and fright have long served as disconcerting artistic vehicles, subverving expectation and unsettling the viewer. In the modern period, the Dada movement of the late teens and 1920s set a presedent with an "anti-art" in which nonsense reigned and provocative antics were a response to the imcomprehensibility of war. Outside the art world, the court jester of history and literature has played a comparable role, acting the clown while offering insight and advice. Contemporary popular culture offers another model: the ANTIHERO, whose frailty and outward cynicism are wrapped around a core of decency. Today's visual artist also explore these posibilities for contradiction, mining mass culture, adopting the role of performer, acting the brash of "bad boy" and "bad girl," challenging stereotypes and taboos, and overtuning standards of good taste and decorum. Critique or commentary is often the result as art strips away the veneer of artificiality from conventional social practice to reveal hidden truths and glaring imperfections.

Already undressed for bed, I realized I still haven't done today's 365 photo. I don't want to show off my PJ's, so common decency leaves me limited subject matter. In this case it's my bedtime routine of inserting my contact lenses, which I only wear while sleeping.

their decency will be betrayed, and their innocence defeated by lust.
