When I've had powerful cars in the past I too have driven around everyone - the difference being that I always use my signals. Always.
When Frontier Airlines obliterated absorbed the Midwest Airlines brand, they at least had the decency to continue the Midwest tradition of warm cookies, baked (or at least warmed) onboard. Alas, Frontier announced last week that upon the depletion of remaining stocks of cookie dough, fresh cookie service would cease. Animal crackers will replace the trademark snack item of a once-great airline.
This is very likely the last baked-onboard cookie I'll likely eat on an US commercial airliner. This one was served en route Denver to San Francisco.

Even on a Monday in September, Chatsworth can be pretty busy so getting half decent shots "sans-peeps" was not easy. It was also pretty gloomy so these three shots are all taken at ISO 2400 f4.5 and shutter speeds of about 1/8sec or so. They were then pushed, bent and generally knocked about way beyond the bounds of common decency!
When I caught a tram home later, the driver asked over the PA 'is she skipping clockwise or anti-clockwise', when we'd passed it he asked again. A random reason to love Melbourne.

Gilad Shalit's plight has gone on far too long, and he must be released and brought back home! Gilad and his family will *never* be the same again - the terrorist kidnappers already killed a part of him long ago, but they should at least have the decency (not to mention observing international law and the Geneva Conventions, and respect for Gilad's human rights) to allow him regular contact with his family and the outside world, as well as third-party medical care.
Ever since Ariadna suggested I could regard "rhythm" in a more architectural way, thinking of the city, I'd see Salvador buildings and words like that would flow into my mind.
The newer parts of Salvador, in my illiterate opinion, are a confusion of ugly "modern" buildings, thrusting against the sky without any decency. No urban planing. No nothing. Mess. Confusion. How could I relate that to rhythm...? Cacophony. Dysrhythmia. Arrhythmia.
I've tried several shots for this theme, and was never satisfied. Or didn't find the time to post it. Now I finally have, but I still want to try another idea I've had for it. Let's see what the future will bring...

There is so much damaged in the cemetery because of the earthquake we have had. It is such a pity as I don' think it will ever be fully repaired.
The Addington Cemetery was established in 1858 when the Scottish Presbyterians of St Andrew’s Church purchased land for a cemetery in Selwyn Street. Although not the first cemetery in Christchurch, Addington was in fact the first “public” cemetery, “being open to all persons of any religious community” and allowing the performance of any religious service “not contrary to public decency”.
The first burial took place on the 10th of November 1858. The cemetery has several persons of note buried within its grounds including activist Kate Sheppard, Christchurch Mayor Tommy Taylor and members of the pioneer family, the Deans.

Tribute to Abimael Guzmán. Sure, he was an idealistic fool and responsible for untold suffering, but at least he had a most uncommon decency to christen his merry band of butchers with a cool name.

Samantha Armstrong aged 21 outside Woolwich Magistrates Court in south east London today, Samantha Armstrong was charged with outraging public decency after having sex with a number of school boys in a public place, on March 28th 2008. The case has been adjourned untill Tuesday and will sit at Greenwich Magistrates Court.

Today, riding from Punakaiki to Hokitika, was road-sign day: saw loads of them and finally found the decency to stop, turn back and take a shot! (or recognise them early enough to stop!)

The Head of State spoke with Ukrainian youth about our country, its future, and the work on the analogy of the Marshall Plan for Ukraine. The President said that the main issue of this plan is the restoration of Ukraine: its energy, technology, and economy. According to preliminary estimates, this will require about $700 billion. However, the amount is not final.
"We do not know the real amounts because the war is not over yet. When it is over, we will analyze everything. Basically, the partners agree that everyone will help rebuild Ukraine, that the amounts are, let's say, understandable and affordable. Let's believe in the decency of our partners and hope that they will accept what they say and not just say it," he noted.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also confident that Ukraine will become a member of the EU and NATO in the coming years.
"NATO is our external defense and, of course, the best security commitment. But I am also convinced that we will strengthen our internal defense. We will strengthen our security at the borders, in the cities, in the communities. In the future, there will be a completely different approach to both security and construction," the President of Ukraine said.
The Head of State added that once the war is over, our country will also pursue the development of various areas of education: medicine, psychology, security, and construction.
Ukraine will need specialists in these fields.

The steamer from Newhaven to the continent. Sadly a half-arsed attempt to preserve the map by placing a sheet of perspex over it has resulted in some moron drilling right through the boat, but at least they've had the decency to remove the offending screw, and (hopefully) the offending moron.

Hope I am not being too subtle here. It seems like there are a lot of folks that are just being plain rude any more. And yet these are the folks that you will see complaining about "what is the world coming to?" whenever things don't go their way, but see nothing wrong with maintaining their part of "human decency." This refrigerator magnet we got from school reflecting the values they wanted to reinforce with our kids seemed most appropriate to represent the values that are being "screwed"...
For those of you whose primary language is not English, I apologize for the colloquialism...

it's exceedingly rare to be able to truthfully describe a politician as a good person, decent, honourable, not to mention well-liked and respected by colleagues and voters across the political spectrum. it is much rarer still to be able to say those words about a contemporary and not some shadowy figure from a dim past, as well as to use them when speaking of a career politician who has moved his way from municipal politics and on to the federal level, as a national leader. canadians lost the only person i can bring to mind who qualifies, or who has qualified for such praise in the last twenty-five or fifty years, and we lost him to cancer only months after the greatest national success the ndp has ever seen.
i chose my words carefully there. i am an occasional ndp voter, but my politics are generally well to the left of their platforms and like most people, i save my most fervent criticism for my allies, in hopes of changing them for the better. jack layton was a trustworthy, direct man who actually valued people and their input, rather than tolerating them and using them in the faustian vote-wheedling bargain that defines modern politics. his committment to effecting real change impressed me even when i disagreed with his agenda, and allowed me to register with the party and cast votes for them since it was easy to see that the overall arc of the party bent toward decency, responsibility and respect.
normally i refer to all people by title and surname unless i know them fairly well, personally, but jack blew away this formality with everyone he met. i spoke with him only occasionally at pride day and political events and have no shining moment of connection with him that allows me to bask in celebrity glow. i do know we generally agreed on policy, and that he understood one central tenet of politics that can fragment progressives - do not make the perfect the enemy of the good, and allow fellow-travellers to follow divergent paths in order to get to the common general destination.
thank you, jack. your efforts in toronto city council in years past set the stage for many of the progressive achievements the city badly needed and improved the quality of life here. your strategic work made the ndp great gains, and that, in turn, has improved both the country in a broad fashion and the quality of parliamentary discourse in what would otherwise be dismal times. your achievements are more numerous and varied than those few i mention here, but we are all aware of them.
finally, i thank you for speaking about cancer frankly, positively and enthusiastically. those of us who suffer, have suffered, survived and have been otherwise affected appreciated the words in your last letter.
and though i did type 'finally' up there, i do have a further final note: at jack's constituency office on broadview (where the shot was taken, of course), there was a line-up to sign a book of thanks/condolences and bouquets of flowers and other tokens piling up during the day and on into the night. the crowd was as diverse as you'd expect (i talked to a couple of steelworkers, a librarian, a lawyer, people of all ages and skin tones and at least one who had never voted ndp), and one of the cbc guys who was there filming stated he'd never seen a turnout even remotely comparable to this for someone who'd not been prime minister.

Something remarkable has been happening in the last month: millions of people have rapidly coalesced around an alternative to Twitter known as Mastodon. Rather than being one big system now owned by one megalomaniac with erratic tendencies, this wonderful network consists of thousands of interconnected systems, all guided by one seemingly basic purpose - don't be vile.
This might seem entirely inconsequential to you, but it is important, because minds that think - folks of science, medical and healthcare, information technology professionals, inventors and dreamers, the marginalized populations, and those being subjected to hate - increasingly found it untenable to spend their time on Twitter. The reason that is important is described in trend #15 of my 23 Trends for 2023 post yesterday - simply put, the world had learned how to rapidly share critical information in a world that was in desperate need of that critical information.
Then, the tool to advance society became a toxic cesspool. And within the last month, since Elon Musk bought the company, the value of this powerful tool has essentially collapsed.
Why is this important? The connectivity to be found in linking together minds that matter advances society in ways that were not previously possible. During Covid, the global medical and scientific community learned how to rapidly coalesce and organize through Twitter to share critical insight. Technology professionals developed groups that instantly shared their thoughts on how to quickly develop national and local efforts to ensure rapid vaccine distribution. Communities subjected to hate - the black community and LGBTQ communities - found Twitter to be a powerful home to organize their goal of fighting hate and protecting their communities. Globally, starting with the Arab Spring in 2013, the network became the place where people chasing the elusive dream of freedom organized and pursued their efforts. Climate scientists and activists who understand that fundamental science tells us that we are not going to a very good place found each other and accelerated their sharing of insight.
All of these things undoubtedly made the world a better place - they accelerated knowledge, helped people discover real solutions to complex problems, and advanced careers. It moved people forward - and in doing so, Twitter became a part of the lives of those who actively discovered the magic of connectivity.
I remember watching ER docs early on during the pandemic, and realized that something very profound was happening online. I knew that if I were a single ER doctor in a ward in middle America dealing with an overwhelmed emergency department full of patients dying from Covid, I had nowhere to turn to understand the new rules of triage. Except, I could now turn to a new, fast-assembled community of similar ER doctors from all over the world who were rapidly learning and sharing insight on how to deal with a situation of unimaginable complexity.
Connectivity was a godsend, a miracle, a gift to an intelligent civilization.
Those were the types of positive things we saw happening online.
And then, all of a sudden, it changed.
The dangerous split in society around the pandemic, and climate science, engendered hate and racism, and extreme politics came into Twitter. It was already there, but as society worsened, so too did the online communities that were formed. The network - the tool you had discovered was a powerful ally in your quest for knowledge and your efforts to advance the world around you - became a toxic sewer. Spending time there quickly became so much worse than having to spend time with your racist uncle. So ... much .... worse.
Almost overnight, and yet not really, since it took some time for it to happen, Twitter - and other networks - became an angry cesspool of hate, a petri dish of putrid attacks, and an engine of vile commentary. Some of this came from bots, but it also came from the rapid rise of the angry right, people who seem to have no agenda other than to fire off their anger at anyone who dares question their angry purpose. We all know these people - we all know we have lost once powerful friendships. We have seen friends descend into madness, lost in the conspiracy theories of a collective sick mind.
With that in mind, today's quote first started out with this thought - but I then decided that it truly didn't fit what I was trying to say:
I wanted to say that I think that minds that matter - people who have optimism wired into their sould - have found a new home.
Suffice it to say, since early November, something is happening. These new communities are rapidly organizing and finding themselves a new home on Mastodon.
Does it matter? Definitely. You can easily find reports of concern as to what the loss of a home for intelligent communities might mean to intelligent people:
And yet, you can see the signs that they are already rapidly reorganizing themselves on Mastodon. For example, this community, med-mastodon.com, offers itself up as a potential new home for the medical community.
This matters. The global hive-mind of science and healthcare needs a home. The climate science and activist community need a home. The LGBTQ community needs a home. Blacks and others who are subjected to hate too need a home. Everyone with decency in their soul needs a home.
Optimists need a home - I need one to feed the energy of optimism within my soul. I've found it here.
The thing is, there are thousands, if not tens of thousands of these communities springing up - and anyone can establish one. The growth rate of Mastodon is nothing less than astounding. And every time the world's newest craziest angry guy does something - such as banning reports who might say something negative about him and hurt his megalomaniac feelings - we see a new flood of people to the network.
Something is happening, and it is profound.
What keeps the hate, anger, and insanity off the network? Why is your crazy racist uncle not showing up, screaming his angry diatribes against the clouds? Because no one owns the network - it is a distributed engine of cooperative insight. Anyone can ban an individual; a network can ban an entire 'instance'. If a site starts up that becomes an engine of hate, people can just turn them off. Banish them. Send them into oblivious nothingness.
I know my existence within these new networks depends upon my behavior. Like, being the same sort of sane, rational person that I am in the real world.
And so far, it's working.
I myself am a long-time veteran of the network, having been there for 45 days. Each day, I see posts from new people finding their way in, looking around, and realizing that it is a positive, welcoming space by which they might rebuild their knowledge networks and bolster their optimism
Yesterday, I captured these sentiments in a short toot. (That's what we call them - I wish I had a 3-year-old so I could just say, 'quiet, Daddy's tooting!')
I have had, literally, hundreds of responses, hundreds of new followers, and thousands of sharing of this simple post. I am rediscovering my fellow optimists.
I am home.
Optimism is being reborn, and its home is within Mastodon.
And I am a part of it, and I am overjoyed.

I've reached a point where I feel the need to express my disappointment with Mr. Brown Pelican. And you know me: I never neglect my obligations. It is more than a purely historical question to ask, "How did Mr. Pelican's reign of terror start?" or even the more urgent question, "How might it end?". No, we must ask, "How much is the axis of evil paying Mr. Pelican to toss quaint concepts like decency, fairness, and rational debate out the window?" The bigger question is the following: What exactly is the principle that rationalizes his pestilential bunco games? Well, while you're deliberating over that, let me ask you another question: Does he realize he's more prodigal than a pudibund philosophunculist? Now, not to bombard you with too many questions, but while he insists that the best way to make a point is with foaming-at-the-mouth rhetoric and letters filled primarily with exclamation points, reality dictates otherwise. Actually, if you want a real dose of reality, look at how when people say that bigotry and hate are alive and well, they're right. And Mr. Pelican is to blame.

Located at the Liberties crossroad junction of Kevin Street, New Street South, Dean Street and Patrick Street. At one time the area was known as “Four Corners of Hell” as there was a pub on all four corners of the crossroads.
This caught me by surprise especially as I should have been aware that these facilities existed having gone to school in Leeson Street and college in Kevin Street. There are two separate entities - a small park and an underground public toilet. More than a year ago the City Council announced that the building would be brought back into use as a cafe “as soon as practical”.
When I first noticed the structure it a few years ago I thought that it was an old monument or memorial but upon seeing the entrance I realised that it was an underground public toilet block.
In the 1950s and 1960s there were about seventy public toilets in Dublin but all of them have been closed.
The underground public toilet block at the junction of Kevin Street and New Street was one of a number that were built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in response to an increasing demand for public facilities in the city. Underground facilities such as this were partially hidden from general view in order to satisfy Victorian perceptions of decency. It retains many of its historic features including railings, gates and decorative ventilation shaft.

Union Square East, Manhattan
The Everett Building is a sixteen-story commercial structure located on the northwest corner of East 17th Street and Park Avenue South. Named for Union Square's nineteenth-century Everett Hotel, and builtin 1908 for the Everett Investing Company, it was designed by Goldwin Starrett & Van Vleck, a firm known for its commercial architecture. It is a quintessential example of a building type defined by A. C. David (writing in Architectural Record in 1910): functional, fireproof, speedy to construct, while also demonstrating a concern for "architectural decency;" as such, this building is a uniquely American architectural expression. In its design, the Everett Building synthesizes classical elements with key aspects of both the New York and the Chicago styles; Goldwin Starrett was familiar with the Chicago style as a result of his years in Daniel Burnham's Chicago office. The building reflects its structure in its cladding, while employing a design vocabulary that includes classical motifs. The Everett Building is prominently located on a site on the north side of Union Square and, together with the monumental Germania (now Guardian) Life Insurance Company Building directly across the avenue, forms an imposing terminus to Park Avenue South.
The Everett Building is a quintessential example of the new commercial style of architecture built around 1910 in New York and concentrated on Fourth Avenue from Union Square to 30th Street. Its design was considered innovative when it was illustrated in the Architectural Record (Dec. 1910), as part of a tribute to the new corridor of commercial buildings in what is now Park Avenue South. 32 These buildings termed "thoroughly contemporary" and "strictly commercial" were erected with exceptional rapidity; the Everett Building "was ready for occupants within four months from the time the first column shoe was set.,,33 In "The New Architecture," A. C. David specified a tall order for architects of these loft and commercial buildings, one which Starrett & Van Vleck fulfilled. Tenants required a maximum amount of clear, preferably square or rectangular, floor space so that large numbers of employees could be supervised by a floor manager. In order to secure the greatest amount of natural light, a corner site, large windows, and high ceilings were imperative.
In addition, the planning of building services affected the 4 amount of "clear and available" floor space. These new structures had to meet the specifications of the insurance companies and of the building laws for fireproofing, in order to obtain the lowest insurance rates (as the Everett Building did). 34 Combining the stairway and fire escape provisions of the building law and omission of power plants in the building were additional ways to cut costs. At the same time, the building must be economical to operate. Speedy construction, a goal facilitated by granolithic or concrete floors, the use of metal trim, the omission of ornamental plastering, and the standardization of detail, was also essential.
In his article, David also suggested that attention to the building's design was necessary because "a structure which presents a good appearance sells better. ,,35 The Everett Building fulfilled these specifications as well. Like the Everett Building, the ideal loft and commercial structure was to consist of "a frame work, usually about sixteen stories high of piers and floors, the lines of both of which are separated by fixed distances, and both of which cannot be disguised by much ornamentation.,,36 An ornamental cornice was not merely permitted but encouraged, even if the natural light on the top floor was impaired. The employment of glazed orange and green terra-cotta panels and medallions brings this desired attention to the Everett Building's crown.
According to David, windows should be grouped in order to emphasize the corners and to convey an impression of solidity; a building could thus be made to resemble a tower rather than a cage. 37 Face brick, laid in patterns, and architectural terra cotta were recommended for the cladding of the shaft. In other instances, exemplified by the Everett Building, "white glazed terra cotta decorated with superficial ornamental patterns has been effectively employed. ,,38 David continues that these buildings were a specific and original American type, "the only genuine commercial architecture in the world.,,39 These characteristics constitute what may be called a New York style.
Classical Aspects of the Building's Design The Everett Building incorporates many classical elements in its design. As in other nearby skyscrapers including Bruce Price's Bank of the Metropolis, a designated New York City Landmark, the tripartite skyscraper elevation inspired by the parts of a classical column is employed in the Everett Building.
A rusticated base is surmounted by a decorative transitional story; an eleven-story shaft leads to yet another transitional story, which is capped by a two-story attic crowned by an elaborate bracketed cornice. The two-story base is articulated by rusticated piers which carry a classically-derived entablature that is embellished with stylized triglyphs and metopes. The building's two-story crown evokes a giant order; the elements of cotta elements. The doorway as built was pedimented with acroteria at center and sides. 40 William H. Jordy has observed that such commercial buildings retain "something of the blocky quality of the Renaissance palace format" which permitted the anonymity and interchangeability of functions. 41 Real Estate Record & Guide concluded that the building "an investor might expect for $900,000," would be a structure "not ... gaudy ••• the whole with its straight, Renaissance architecture giving the impression of commercial utility.
