ok, now maybe this is my relatively pointless architecture blog, #5?

oh, to clarify: i’m not saying the architecture is relatively pointless, i’m merely suggesting that my blog is relatively pointless. the architecture is anything but pointless, it’s great, even when it’s banal and mundane. it’s my blogging that is relatively pointless. or so i believe. i guess i should work on my syntax.

today i’ve decided to go for something a bit more (read: very) obvious. the esteemed and storied (in both senses of the word) castillo del lago.

or, as it’s still referred to, even though she moved out a while ago,: ‘madonna’s house’.

or, by the old timers: ‘bugsy siegel’s house’.

i have no idea who lives there now, but they did have the decency to paint over madonna’s pink stripes and return the structures to what they were like in the early 20th century (or so i’m assuming).

so, here are some pictures i took yesterday afternoon of castillo del lago, which is arguably one of the coolest and grandest houses in l.a. i’m sure it’s modeled after some remarkable european castle, but in my ignorance i have no idea which one. it’s very big and beautiful and it will probably be called ‘madonna’s house’ for the next 50 years or so.

Next job was to look at the 'decency' screen(?) by the door as the bottom section showed major signs of rot. It was rubbed down and the rotten bits cut out.

School of Champions is a missionary program to educate children from families whom live and work at the garbage dumps in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, sorting recyclables. The children start working at the dumps at a very young age in order to help support the family and often grow up without an education. School of Champions have put progams in place to help these kids get educated and realize their potential.

“I am aware that invoking personal decency, personal humility, as the solution to a vast risk taken on our half by corporate industrialism is not going to suit everybody. Some will find it an insult to their sense of proportion, others to their sense of drama. I am offended by it myself, and I wish I could do better. But having looked about, I have been unable to convince myself that there is a better solution or one that has a better chance of working.”

The Way of Ignorance: And Other Essays By Wendell Berry

A few days ago I read that this facility is to be restored as a cafe or restaurant and I also discovered that the area was locally known as the "Four Corners of Hell" because crossroad junction of Kevin Street, New Street South, Dean Street and Patrick Street had a pub on each corner and became especially rowdy at closing time.

This caught me by surprise [when I first noticed it a few months ago] especially as I should have been aware that these facilities existed having gone to school in Leeson Street and college in Kevin Street. There are two separate entities - a small park and an underground public toilet.

Initially I thought that it was an old monument or memorial but upon seeing the entrance I realised that it was an underground public toilet block.

In the 1950s and 1960s there were about seventy public toilets in Dublin but all of them have been closed. The underground public toilet block at the junction of Kevin Street and New Street was one of a number that were built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in response to an increasing demand for public facilities in the city. Underground facilities such as this were partially hidden from general view in order to satisfy Victorian perceptions of decency. It retains many of its historic features including railings, gates and decorative ventilation shaft.

I wonder why this man was alowed to join the Dutch police. Must be tactics... when waving his ticketbook at ya and flashing that smile ... why would you object? Exactly.

So, I said, why not 'pull a Paris Hilton' and he knew exactly what I wanted :) Great.

But this also calls for a song, because it's that time of the week :)

Do I have to put the law on you baby

For all the wicked things you do

Am I gonna have to put the law on you baby

That was not what I wanted to do

Do I have to put the law on you baby

To try and make you come out clean

for every evil deed

You're just about the lowest and the dirtiest thing

I've ever seen

Did you really think you could pull it off

The perfect crime,

crime of the heart

Do you really think that you'll get away

Do the crime and never ever pay

Do I have to put the law on you baby

Lock you up and throw away the key

For the countless counts of low down double-cross you've been about

Have you no decency

Did you really think that you could pull it off

The perfect crime, crime of the heart

Did you really think that you'll get away

Escape my justice until you're dying day

Though you made it clear from the very start

There was no trusting you with my foolish heart

Though you maybe made it clear that didn't make it right

Do you really think you'll get away

You can't escape my justice 'til my dying day

And when do you turn, that 70 milestone? I am not that far behind you and somewhat wizened with this disease and the remedy for the same. But this is not a complaint, I might be described as deliriously happy to be at this end of the whole shebang, rather than at that hormone-driven intermediate stage between abused childhood and the ‘dealing with it’ years, that 60-year interregnum.

There’s a bit more clarity now, enough to let me even love ‘him indoors’, as I like to call him. I certainly made a bit of a feast of it all, filling galleries, and the occasional museum, with that ‘struggle’, even causing the Catholic League of Decency’s attempt to try to close down the Mc Mullan Museum in Boston, all because of my penchant to get me mickey out, and to wave it about in indignation and distress. I have described that moment when my mother made me an exhibitionist, and if you give her the wool, she will make you one too. The old jokes are indeed the worst, as poor old Whoppie is discovering to her undoing. The mammy is, of course, beastly dead, and won’t be making you no knitted exhibitionist, but I can supply the pattern, if you ever feel the leaning.

Work on No20 has been plodding on slowly with jobs like luggage pen stripdown/repaint, decency screen repair /refit and removal of the doors. One door section was very corroded at the bottom so the bottom inch or so was cut off. A new piece will be fabricated and welded on.

174. (1) Every one who, without lawful excuse,

(a) is nude in a public place, or

(b) is nude and exposed to public view while on private property, whether or not the property is his own,

is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.

Marginal note:Nude

(2) For the purposes of this section, a person is nude who is so clad as to offend against public decency or order.

Marginal note:Consent of Attorney General

(3) No proceedings shall be commenced under this section without the consent of the Attorney General.

R.S., c. C-34, s. 170.

Not sure about that definition of nudity. "a person is nude who is so clad"...?

His odor was unsettling. Thought was impossible when inundated with the disgusting aroma of tangy body odor, sweaty clothes drenched with feces and the stench acquired from a less than sedentary lifestyle comprised of wallowing in the summer heat without concern for hygeine or even a sense of decency.

I almost gagged when this slovenly terror awoke and moved, unleashing hidden stenches that effusively coalesced from nostril to nostril of each victim in the coach.

I dabbed old spice on my upper lip, a move that granted less than a minute's respite from the rancid effervescence of my apathetic assailant.

I am in no way exaggerating what ranks in the top 10 worst hours of my life. If I encounter this beast again I shall debark the bus promptly and suffer an hour wherever I end up.

“But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you.” (Psalm10:14)

Islamic terror groups have had a favorite taunt for several decades which says, “first the Saturday people, then the Sunday people.” This means of course, first the Jews then the Christians will be targets for terrorist persecution, subjection, and elimination.

Saturday People, Sunday People tells the story of the real Israel and of real Israelis—ordinary and extraordinary—and the energetic rhythm of their lives, even during times of tragedy and terror. The book interweaves a memoir of Lela Gilbert’s experiences with Israel’s people and places, alongside a rich account of past and present events that continue to shape the lives of Israelis and the world beyond their borders.

Lela Gilbert arrived in Israel on a personal pilgrimage in August 2006 — in the midst of a raging war. What she found was a vibrant country, enlivened by warm-hearted, lively people of great intelligence and decency. She had long been fascinated by a land that has become an abstraction centering on international conflicts of epic proportions.

“Despite the constant threats it receives, Israel is one of the liveliest places in the world. Israelis cherish life dynamically and celebrate it with zest at every opportunity. I’ve often wondered if this is because they have experienced so much more than their fair share of death.” Even a memorial service for Yoni Netanyahu, the Entebbe Raid war hero and brother of the current prime minister, Gilbert explains, is a “celebration of his life and not a glorification of his death.” Military heroes like Yoni remind us that freedom is not free and that to love life means, paradoxically, to be willing to die for what we love the most — our loved ones, our faith, our nation and our liberty.

Jews and Christian share a common tradition and faith, founded on” biblical principles, founded on the sanctity of life, affirming that humans are made in the image of God . . . Our roots are firmly planted in common ground. … We have chosen life and we deplore the Islamist culture of death. We needn’t fight our battles alone.” It is a timely reminder of the nature of our shared enemy and the obligation for shared defense in the cultural, ideological and military war against the jihadist culture of death.

As the enemies of the Jews are determined to annihilate God’s people so we need to be even more committed to pray for the peace and protection of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6). Jews and Christians alike are under attack from the evil that men do. However, our help comes from the Lord who made Heaven and earth. Let us look unto the hills from whence cometh our help. He tells us to call upon Him.

On a walk around the Addington Cemetery with a wonderful Flickr friend. February 13, 2016 Christchurch New Zealand.

There is so much damaged in the cemetery because of the earthquake we have had. It is such a pity as I don' think it will ever be fully repaired.

The Addington Cemetery was established in 1858 when the Scottish Presbyterians of St Andrew’s Church purchased land for a cemetery in Selwyn Street. Although not the first cemetery in Christchurch, Addington was in fact the first “public” cemetery, “being open to all persons of any religious community” and allowing the performance of any religious service “not contrary to public decency”.

The first burial took place on the 10th of November 1858. The cemetery has several persons of note buried within its grounds including activist Kate Sheppard, Christchurch Mayor Tommy Taylor and members of the pioneer family, the Deans.

While I was waiting to meet my dad in a parking lot to switch over my gear and drive to the fishing camp in March, I spotted this ancient beast, and decided that I had to take a picture of it. I don't see too many of these old 8th-generation F-series trucks anymore...they were built between 1987 and 1991. I've never driven one, but I did drive two F-350s regularly at work that were from the following generation...still boxy-looking, before they moved to the rounded look.

Anyway, it seems like the money gods are out to get me. I can't get a break. Today I got a parking ticket...probably my fourth. As a man who was born and raised in the subdivisions (I hesitate to say "suburbs" because I think that actually means something kind of different), I am, and have always been, offended by the notion that I don't have a right to park for free in the older areas of whatever city I'm in. I would really like to have been in the room with first person piece of shit who decided "Hey! Why don't we charge people to park their cars in the spots where they most need to park?"

At least the City of Toronto (in this case) could have the decency of telling us where this money collected from tickets goes. Like if they were to say "This pothole was repaired with the money from 15 parking tickets" or something else that would indicate that my money is actually going to fund some city service that I personally will use.

In fact, I think we should have a right to determine which city department gets the money from our tickets.

This furry little ball of energy is a pika. This hyper little guy would scurry about the rocky talus gathering grasses to bring back to its den. After watching for a little while I noticed that it kept stopping at one location, look around, then dart off again. These images were taken a few minutes apart, and if you ever saw a pika you would know it never stays still for more than a few seconds. But it did have the decency to pause in a nice beam of light.

Depeche Mode - Walking In My Shoes, live

Walkng in my shoes

I would tell you about the things

They put me through

The pain Ive been subjected to

But the lord himself would blush

The countless feasts laid at my feet

Forbidden fruits for me to eat

But I think your pulse would start to rush

Now Im not looking for absolution

Forgiveness for the things I do

But before you come to any conclusions

Try walking in my shoes

Try walking in my shoes

Youll stumble in my footsteps

Keep the same appointments I kept

If you try walking in my shoes

If you try walking in my shoes

Morality would frown upon

Decency look down upon

The scapegoat fates made of me

But I promise you, my judge and jurors

My intentions couldnt have been purer

My case is easy to see

Im not looking for a clearer conscience

Peace of mind after what Ive been through

And before we talk of repentance

Try walking in my shoes

Try walking in my shoes

Youll stumble in my footsteps

Keep the same appointments I kept

If you try walking in my shoes

If you try walking in my shoes

Try walking in my shoes

Now Im not looking for absolution

Forgiveness for the things I do

But before you come to any conclusions

Try walking in my shoes

Try walking in my shoes

Youll stumble in my footsteps

Keep the same appointments I kept

If you try walking in my shoes

Elegant railway station in North Bridge Street, Monkwearmouth designed by Thomas Moore, It was opened on 19th June 1848 as the new Sunderland terminus for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway's Brandling Junction Railway, which originally opened in 1839, linking Wearside with South Shields and Gateshead. It was closed to passengers in 1967 and saved from dereliction by Sunderland Corporation and it was reopened as a Railway Museum by H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh in 1973. The building is listed Grade II*. Desrcibed by Nikolas Pevser "If one does not mind a railway station looking like a Literary and Scientific Institution or provincial Athenaeum, then Monkwearmouth is one of the most handsome stations in existence.”

The new railway station in North Bridge Street,

Monkwearmouth was opened on 19 June 1848. It

was the new Sunderland terminus for the Brandling

Junction Railway, opened in 1839, that linked

Wearside with South Shields and Gateshead. It

replaced a basic wooden station in Roker Avenue of

which it was said: “the usual accommodation

provided for civilised people was wanting at this, as at

almost every other Brandling Junction station.” It was

also said that people at the station were subject to:

“frequent breaches of public decency.”

George Hudson, then chairman of the Midland

Railway company and known as “The Railway King”,

wanted to mark his successful election as MP for

Sunderland and commissioned Thomas Moore

(1796 - 1869), the leading architect in Victorian

Sunderland, to design the station.

Monkwearmouth proved to be a busy station

between 1848 and 1879, catering for a wide range of

passengers, as well as handling shipments of cows

and sheep. In 1879, when the North Eastern Railway

Company extended the line across the river for the

first time, Monkwearmouth lost much of its

importance as a major station. By the 1950s parts of

the station had become derelict and passenger

numbers were dwindling. In 1967 it was closed to

travellers and in 1970 all railway use ended, however

to this day, trains still pass through the station from

Sunderland to Newcastle.

The building was saved from dereliction by

Sunderland Corporation and was reopened as a

Museum by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh in 1973.

American actress Tallulah Bankhead (1902-1968) was the most popular star of London's famed West End in the 1920s. After starring in several well-received plays, she gained the attention of Paramount Pictures executives and returned to the United States to try her hand at the film world. Tallulah's personality did not shine on film as Paramount executives had hoped. She appeared in such films as Devil and the Deep (1932) with Gary Cooper, Charles Laughton and newcomer Cary Grant, and Lifeboat (1944). While she made most of her fame on the stages of the world, the film industry and its history became richer because of her talent and her very colourful personality. Today her phrase, "Hello, Dahling" is known throughout the entertainment world.

Tallulah Bankhead was born in 1902 in Huntsville, Alabama, U.S.A. She was not the first Tallulah in the Bankhead family, as she was named for her paternal grandmother, whose parents believed they had conceived her during a stopover at Tallulah Falls in Georgia. Her paternal grandfather was a noted politician and was notably a Senator from Alabama from 1907 until he passed away in 1920. Tallulah’s father followed in his footsteps and reached the pinnacle of his brilliant political career when he became Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1936 to his death in 1940. Tallulah never knew her mother, who died of blood poisoning shortly after her birth, on the 23rd of February. She had an elder sister, Eugenia, also an original, who had an impressive record of seven marriages, including three to the same man. Since childhood, Tallulah revelled in being the centre of attention and soon dreamed of becoming an actress. In 1917, she sent her photo to Picture Play Magazine, which was conducting a beauty contest that would award the twelve winners a movie part. Her elegant portrait in hat and furs made her appear older than she was and favourably impressed the members of the jury, who decided to select her. In 1918 and 1919, she played in several films, usually in supporting roles. The only exception was Thirty a Week (1918), in which she was Tom Moore’s leading lady. However, Tallulah was much more interested in the stage and, from 1918 to 1922, appeared in eight plays on Broadway, without managing to establish herself as a star and reach the topmost rung of the ladder. She began to grow impatient and disappointed with the progress of her career.

In the fall of 1922, Tallulah Bankhead was noticed by famous British impresario and theatrical manager Charles B. Cochran, who campaigned for her upon his return to London and soon told her that she was seriously considered for the part of an American girl in Gerald Du Maurier’s forthcoming play 'The Dancers'. After having received another telegram informing her that another actress had been chosen, a determined Tallulah decided to go to Great Britain anyway. She arrived in January 1923 and quickly succeeded in convincing Du Maurier that she was the ideal choice for his play. 'The Dancers' opened in February and was a huge hit. She played it more than three hundred times and it made her the darling of the British stage. Her other London plays include 'The Creaking Chair' (1924), 'Fallen Angels' (1925), 'The Green Hat' (1925), 'They Knew What They Wanted' (1926), 'The Gold Diggers' (1926-1927), 'The Garden of Eden' (1927), 'Her Cardboard Lover' (1928), 'Let Us Be Gay' (1930), … She was noted for being the object of adulation from groups of young female fans, called the Gallery Girls, who greeted her loudly when she played on stage. For them, she represented the embodiment of their dreams and was the epitome of glamour and modernity. She also became famous for her wit, her hectic way of life, her antics and her constant partying. In 1928, after her name had been linked to that of five Eton College students, she was the subject of a confidential report from the MI5 Security Service, which regarded her as an "extremely immoral woman" and even considered at a time to deport her from the country. In 1928, she starred in the film His House in Order, for which she allegedly received the highest salary ever paid to a film star in England at the time. In 1929, she was seen and heard, thanks to the British Photophone process, in the short Her Cardboard Lover, a filmed extract from the play of the same name.

At the end of 1930, Tallulah Bankhead signed a film contract with Paramount, which wanted to turn her into another Marlene Dietrich. So, she came back to the United States. She was launched, in a blaze of publicity, in Tarnished Lady (1931), to disappointing box-office receipts and mostly negative reviews. My Sin (1931), The Cheat (1931), Thunder Below (1932), The Devil and the Deep (1932) and Faithless (1932), which she made on loan to M.G.M., followed. However, on the whole, and despite an intensive promoting campaign ("We gave you Marlene Dietrich, now we give you Tallulah Bankhead" proclaimed the ads), she failed to elicit more than a tepid response from the public, which was not as enthusiastic as Paramount had hoped for. She was mostly used in heavy melodramas that didn’t do justice to her talents and were not suited to her. Trying to make her a new Dietrich or a new Garbo had been a mistake. Tallulah had too much personality to be a second anybody. Furthermore, in the summer of 1932, she gave an interview to the Motion Picture magazine in which she openly lamented over her lack of male companionship during the last six months and boldly declared: "I Want a Man". It caused a commotion at the time and Will Hays, the initiator of the famous decency code, soon expressed his disapproval. She issued a denial but it was too late: the damage had been done. It was time for Tallulah to leave Hollywood and go back on the stage. She then starred in seven Broadway plays from 1933 to 1938, without scoring significant success. She reached the nadir when Shakespeare’s 'Antony and Cleopatra' closed after only five performances in November 1937. Ironically, one of her Broadway flops, 'Dark Victory', became a very successful screen vehicle for Bette Davis in 1939. In December 1936, she screen-tested for the role of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind but David O’ Selznick found her too old, as the heroine is not yet twenty years old at the beginning of the story.

Fortunately, at the end of the 1930s, Tallulah Bankhead was given the plum role of Regina Giddens in Lillian Hellman’s Broadway play 'The Little Foxes'. It was a triumph, which made her a luminary of the American Theatre, and she played it more than four hundred times, from February 1939 to February 1940. The 1940s were a brilliant decade for Tallulah on Broadway, especially thanks to Thornton Wilder’s 'The Skin of Our Teeth' (1942-1943) and Noël Coward’s 'Private Lives' (1948-1949). In 1944, she starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Lifeboat, in a role much better suited to her persona than her previous film parts. She then played Empress Catherine of Russia in Otto Preminger’s A Royal Scandal (1945). She had her last Broadway success with 'Dear Charles' (1954-1955). Four resounding flops followed: 'A Streetcar Named Desire' in 1956, 'Eugenia' in 1957, 'Midgie Purvis' in 1961 and 'The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore' in 1964. As the years went by, Tallulah the legend began to put Tallulah the actress in the shade. Several audience members came to see her on stage only to be entertained by their idol and have fun, even if she was appearing in a drama. For example, on the opening night of 'A Streetcar Named Desire', her gay following, much to her dismay, decided to take the play as a comedy and broke into gales of laughter whenever she had a line that could be construed as camp.

In the 1950s, Tallulah Bankhead tackled new challenges. From 1950 to 1952, she served as mistress of ceremonies on the radio in the big-budgeted and star-studded weekly program 'The Big Show'. People such as Groucho Marx, Ethel Barrymore, Marlene Dietrich, Louis Armstrong, Edith Piaf, Gloria Swanson, Gary Cooper, Danny Kaye, Ethel Merman, Bob Hope, Judy Garland, Ginger Rogers, Jimmy Durante, Frank Sinatra or Judy Holliday were among the prestigious guests. In 1952, she made her first TV appearance and, in 1957, she played herself, to hilarious results, in an episode called The Celebrity Next Door of the popular Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show. Her autobiography, simply called 'Tallulah', became one of 1952’s best-selling books. In 1953 and 1954, she headlined a lucrative cabaret act at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. In 1951, she filed a complaint against her maid, who had been stealing money from her by forging checks. During the trial in December, the Defense tried to take the spotlight off their client and focused on Tallulah by making shocking revelations about her private life and her use of alcohol and drugs. The press had a field day, to her humiliation. The maid was finally declared guilty. At the end of 1949, she screen-tested for the role of Amanda in The Glass Menagerie. Director Irving Rapper was amazed and deeply moved by her performance but Jack Warner, who thought that her drinking could cause problems during filming, chose Gertrude Lawrence instead. She appeared as herself in Main Street to Broadway (1953), seemingly having great fun at caricaturing her personality and uttering self-ironic lines such as "I doubt if anyone will have as many flops as I’ve had". She later starred in England in the Hammer horror thriller film Fanatic/Die Die My Darling (1965), playing a former actress who has turned into an old ghastly-looking religious fanatic. It was intended to cash in on the vogue initiated by Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? three years before. Tallulah Bankhead was a lifelong Democrat Party supporter. She was also a passionate anti-communist, but this didn’t prevent her from profoundly disliking Joseph McCarthy, whom she called a 'disgrace to the nation'. She expressed several times her support for the civil rights movement and opposed segregation. For example, in 1946, she publicly denounced the Washington National Theater, which, at the time, didn’t allow Afro-Americans to attend performances, and, in 1947, she spoke against lynching at a Chicago rally. Her last role as an actress was as the evil Black Widow in two 1967 Batman episodes. She made her last appearance on television on The Tonight Show on the 14th of May 1968, alongside John Lennon and Paul McCartney, no less. She passed away on the 12th of December 1968, of pneumonia complicated by emphysema. Allegedly, her last audible words have been "codeine" and "bourbon". She thus would have stayed incorrigible until the end … and that’s the way we like her.

All that is coming out of the lockdown is hospitality going down the pan and people losing jobs and feeling miserable you need to think

Unspoilt, peaceful, Georgian country parish church, mostly dating from 1719-20 but built on the foundation of a much older church. From the outside, it is a handsome church, X-plan, with an additional wing at the west end, topped by a belfry tower, containing the ducal retiring rooms. The interior, renovated 1784-5 and re-arranged circa 1870, has a typical presbyterian layout with central pulpit and three galleries. Many of the box pews have a central communion table. The north aisle of the church is taller and more sophisticated, built for the Duke of Queensberry and remaining from the earlier church. Inside the Queensberry Aisle is the real jewel of the church: the most amazing monument for the Queensberry burial vault, a baroque mural monument and free-standing baldacchino carved in 1695 by John van Nost to the design of James Smith who was also architect of the later church. A riot of swagged fabric, garlands of flowers, urns, barley-sugar columns, cherubs, skulls and pediments, all in gleaming white marble. 'There are few buildings in which baroque magnificence and presbyterian decency are so happily combined.' (George Hay, Architecture of Scottish Post-Reformation Churches). The churchyard contains some fine 17th-19th century stone monuments, many with classical ornament, including the martyr's monument to Daniel MacMichael and the 1685 monument to the children of William Lukup, Master of Works at nearby Drumlanrig.

“[1667, September] 29.—lords day. I went to John Robinson’s and was all night for they lent me a horse to Chester faire... I gat to Chester..., and I went to the castle to see a man condemned [to death;] a pretie young man he was and very sorie I was I gave a man 2d in ale to let me admittance into castle yard and he tooke me up and downe. The souldiers was most of them all drunke and glad I was when I was gotton out of the gates from amongst them.”

[From “Diary of Roger Lowe of Ashton-in-Makerfield”, Wigan Archives ref. D/DZ A58]

A very wide range of offences, from shop-lifting to murder, were at this time punishable by hanging. Until 1868, when public execution was abolished, the notion that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done was given a very literal application. As V A C Gatrell explains, “executions were mounted FOR the people, and the crowd's function was to bear witness to the might of the law and the wickedness of crime and to internalize those things”. In practice, however, the crowd “wore many faces”, appearing “festive, reverential, defensive, defiant, or cowed by turns”.* Lowe's sentiments on witnessing the hanging of the “pretie young man” at Chester strangely echo those of London diarist Samuel Pepys who, on 21 January 1664, was present at the hanging of “Colonel” James Turner for kidnap and burglary:

“I got for a shilling to stand upon the wheel of a cart... A comely-looked man he was, and kept his countenance to the end – I was sorry to see him”.

Roger Lowe additionally records the hanging at Chester of Hamblett Ashton on 7 September 1663. Although his crime – the murder of a tapster (barman)- was committed at Nantwich, he was evidently a local man as Lowe includes his funeral in the list of those to which he was “providentialle” called during his apprenticeship. To this account the diarist adds: “The lord preserve us from such practices and such end. Amen.”

“When the Day of Execution is come, among extraordinary Sinners, and Persons condemned for their Crimes, who have but that Morning to live, one would expect a deep Sense of Sorrow, with all the Signs of a thorough Contrition, and the utmost Concern; that either Silence, or a sober Sadness, should prevail; and that all, who had any Business there, should be grave and serious, and behave themselves, at least, with common Decency, and a Deportment suitable to the Occasion. But the very Reverse is true. The horrid Aspects of Turnkeys and Gaolers, in Discontent and Hurry...; the Variety of strong Voices that are heard, of howling in one Place, scolding and quarrelling in another, and loud Laughter in a third; the substantial Breakfasts that are made in the midst of all this; the Seas of Beer that are swill'd...; the Impudence, and unseasonable Jests of those, who administer them; their black Hands, and Nastiness all over - all these, joined together, are astonishing and terrible...

At last, out they set; and with that a Torrent of Mob bursts through the Gate.... 'Prentices and Journeymen are the most honourable Part of these floating Multitudes. All the rest are worse. The Days being known before-hand, they are a Summons to all Thieves and Pickpockets, of both Sexes, to meet … Here the most abandon'd Rakehells may light on Women as shameless: Here Trollops, all in Rags, may pick up Sweethearts of the same Politeness: And there are none so lewd, so vile, or so indigent, of either Sex, but at the Time and Place aforesaid they may find a Paramour.... Where the Crowd is the least, which, among the Itinerants, is no where very thin, the Mob is the rudest; and here jostling one another and kicking Dirt about are the most innocent Pastimes. Now you see a Man, without Provocation, push his Companion in the Kennel; and two Minutes after, the Sufferer trip up the other's Heels, and the first Aggressor lies rolling in the more solid Mire: And he is the prettiest Fellow among them who is the least shock'd at Nastiness and the most boisterous in his Sports. No modern Rabble can long subsist without their darling Cordial, [and] the Traders who vent it among the Mob on these Occasions are commonly the worst of both Sexes but most of them weather-beaten Fellows that have mis-spent their Youth. Here stands an old Sloven, in a Wig actually putrify'd, squeez'd up in a Corner, and recommends a Dram of it to the Goers-by: There another in Rags, with several Bottles in a Basket stirs about with it where the Throng is the thinnest, and tears his Throat with crying his Commodity...

It is incredible what a Scene of Confusion all this often makes, which yet grows worse near the Gallows; and the violent Efforts of the most sturdy and resolute of the Mob on one Side, and the potent Endeavours of rugged Goalers and others to beat them off on the other; the terrible Blows that are struck, the Heads that are broke, the Pieces of swingeing Sticks and Blood that fly about, the Men that are knock'd down and trampled upon, are beyond Imagination, whilst the Dissonance of Voices, and the Variety of Outcries, for different Reasons, that are heard there, together with the Sound of more distant Noises, make such a Discord not to be parallel'd....”.

If you're going to rock the Delorean, have the decency to have a license plate like "MCFLY" as this driver has done.

During his working visit to Chernivtsi, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with students of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, Bukovinian State Medical University and Chernivtsi Institute of Trade and Economic of State University of Trade and Economics.

The Head of State spoke with Ukrainian youth about our country, its future, and the work on the analogy of the Marshall Plan for Ukraine. The President said that the main issue of this plan is the restoration of Ukraine: its energy, technology, and economy. According to preliminary estimates, this will require about $700 billion. However, the amount is not final.

"We do not know the real amounts because the war is not over yet. When it is over, we will analyze everything. Basically, the partners agree that everyone will help rebuild Ukraine, that the amounts are, let's say, understandable and affordable. Let's believe in the decency of our partners and hope that they will accept what they say and not just say it," he noted.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also confident that Ukraine will become a member of the EU and NATO in the coming years.

"NATO is our external defense and, of course, the best security commitment. But I am also convinced that we will strengthen our internal defense. We will strengthen our security at the borders, in the cities, in the communities. In the future, there will be a completely different approach to both security and construction," the President of Ukraine said.

The Head of State added that once the war is over, our country will also pursue the development of various areas of education: medicine, psychology, security, and construction.

Ukraine will need specialists in these fields.
