The farthest star and the mud at my feet are a family; and there is no decency or sense in honoring one thing, or a few things, and then closing the list.

significantly more clothed today.

I've also only been awake for about 5 1/2 hours because nobody in my family had the decency to wake me up at a reasonable hour. Thanks guys.

On a walk around the Addington Cemetery with a wonderful Flickr friend. February 13, 2016 Christchurch New Zealand.

There is so much damaged in the cemetery because of the earthquake we have had. It is such a pity as I don' think it will ever be fully repaired.

The Addington Cemetery was established in 1858 when the Scottish Presbyterians of St Andrew’s Church purchased land for a cemetery in Selwyn Street. Although not the first cemetery in Christchurch, Addington was in fact the first “public” cemetery, “being open to all persons of any religious community” and allowing the performance of any religious service “not contrary to public decency”.

The first burial took place on the 10th of November 1858. The cemetery has several persons of note buried within its grounds including activist Kate Sheppard, Christchurch Mayor Tommy Taylor and members of the pioneer family, the Deans.

Better pics coz the original one I posted before it aired was only to get everyone talking, which it quite successfully did. LOL

I am just ready to forgive my cat after suffering (mild) PTSD, having found him crunching on a poor small creatures skull at 3am this morning. I needed paracetamol at 3 am and wandered into the pantry to find (literally) blood & guts all over the floor.

He had the decency to show remorse and skulk away (I anthropromorphize) ... just when did he learn to unlock the cat flap at night?

However this cat does captivate most people who meet him- not only is he quite an unusual looking cat but he has bags of character too. He is typical of most Siamese in that he is a very sociable cat & positively laps up any attention paid to him!

My hip, six or seven days after I collided with the left-centerfielder during a playoff game. It actually extended well below the location shown, but for the sake of decency I didn't photograph any lower.

Lloyd Price (1933-2021) was an American R&B and rock 'n' roll singer. He was known as 'Mr. Personality' after his million-selling hit, 'Personality' (1959). Although most of Price's hits occurred in the late 1950s and early 1960s, he had his first hit in 1952 with 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy', which became a major R&B hit. Lloyd Price was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Lloyd Price was born and raised in 1933 in Kenner, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans. His mother, Beatrice Price, owned the Fish 'n' Fry Restaurant. Price picked up lifelong interests in business and food from her. He and his younger brother Leo were both musical. He had formal training on trumpet and piano, sang in his church's gospel choir, and was a member of a combo in high school. His first recording, 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy', was a hit for Specialty Records in 1952. However, his budding career came to a quick halt in 1954 when he was drafted into the army and was sent to Korea. Because of his musical background, though, he was placed into the Special Services (entertainment) branch, where he was put in charge of a large dance band that played 'Swing' music to entertain the troops. It was here that Price got the idea for what was to become his trademark style: combining a lush, full orchestra with the grittier, rawer tempos and vocals of R&B. After he returned, he found he had been replaced by Little Richard. Price made the rounds of record companies trying to convince them of the soundness of his idea, but he got nowhere. Frustrated, he started his own label, Kent Records. He continued to release records, but none were as popular until several years later, when he refined the New Orleans beat and achieved a series of national hits. His first record on Kent, 1957's 'Just Because', became a regional hit on the East Coast, but Kent, like other small labels, found it difficult to distribute nationally, limiting the chances of the record's success. Price managed to sign a distribution deal with ABC-Paramount Records, a major player with national distribution, and that enabled the record to stay on the charts for the next six months. The next year, he signed a distribution deal with Atlantic Records, another major label. However, he soon grew tired of both running a record label and performing, and decided to concentrate solely on performing.

Lloyd Price signed a recording contract with ABC-Paramount in 1958 and released what would be one of his biggest hits, 'Stagger Lee', complete with his trademark combination of orchestral background and R&B vocals. The record sold more than a million copies and was the top R&B record of 1959. The song did cause some controversy, though. It was based on an old tune called 'Stag-O-Lee' about an argument that took place during a gambling game that resulted in a barroom murder. Religious pressure groups, among them the Catholic Church's Legion of Decency, pressured Paramount not to release the record at all, due to its 'immoral' subject matter. Paramount did release it, but the lyrics were somewhat sanitised, with no mention of gambling or the shooting resulting in the character's death. Price's follow-up songs to 'Stagger Lee' were also big hits: 'Personality' and 'I'm Gonna Get Married'. Price left Paramount in 1962 and started his own record label again, Double-L. While he had some modest hits with that label, its main claim to fame was that it was the label which first signed Wilson Pickett to a solo contract. Price signed with several different labels over the next several years. He was the first black artist signed by Monument Records, a Nashville label that specialised almost exclusively in Country & Western singers. However, he couldn't manage to chart with any more records. To jumpstart his career, he started his own label again, Turntable Records, and even opened up a nightclub in New York called Turntables. From 1972 on, he concentrated more on personal appearances and concerts rather than recording. He entered semi-retirement in the mid-1980s and only occasionally appeared in concerts or on television. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Dressed in a hat decorated with Australian flags and a long yellow dress, a resident, Kate McCulloch, emerged from the meeting declaring a victory for "decency" - and insisted Muslims were incompatible with the local community. "The ones that come here oppress our society, they take our welfare and they don't want to accept our way of life," she said.

The kind of card that got McGill into trouble with the 'decency police' in the 1950s. Five shops were raided in a single day in 1953 in Ryde, Isle of Wight, and over 5,000 cards were seized. A year later, McGill faced charges under the Obscene Publications Act 1857 and was fined £50 at Lincoln Magistrates Court. Almost unbelievable nowadays... (New Comics Series 1806)

Depeche Mode Walking In My Shoes (youtu.be/srqTq3juh_0)

I would tell you about the things

They put me through

The pain I've been subjected to

But the Lord himself would blush

The countless feasts laid at my feet

Forbidden fruits for me to eat

But I think your pulse would start to rush

Now I'm not looking for absolution

Forgiveness for the things I do

But before you come to any conclusions

Try walking in my shoes

Try walking in my shoes

You'll stumble in my footsteps

Keep the same appointments I kept

If you try walking in my shoes

If you try walking in my shoes

Morality would frown upon

Decency look down upon

The scapegoat fate's made of me

But I promise now, my judge and jurors

My intentions couldn't have been purer

My case is easy to see

I'm not looking for a clearer conscience

Peace of mind after what I've been through

And before we talk of any repentance

Try walking in my shoes

Try walking in my shoes

You'll stumble in my footsteps

Keep the same appointments I kept

If you try walking in my shoes

If you try walking in my shoes

Try walking in my shoes

Now I'm not looking for absolution

Forgiveness for the things I do

But before you come to any conclusions

Try walking in my shoes

Try walking in my shoes

Bad a Chreamha.

This is the tree line. A remnant of what must have been before clearing for sheep grazing and felling for timber for roofing and keeping the fires going. There are no peat cuttings here, the slope is too steep, and the lower fields are soil rather than peat.

This ash tree is a sentinel, and cane been seen from all around. Used by the cuckoos in the summer and the buzzards in the other seasons.

It is on the turn, as the greenery is not normally so verdant. It will be yellow and brown in the next few weeks.

In the foreground is bracken tangle, which is being scythed by hand by the crofters here, to encourage sheep walks between the grassier parts of the hill, of which there are many. It is a south facing and well drained hill that has been pasture in the past - at the expense of the trees.

The woodland at the loch side creates boundaries for the fenced enclosures, where highland cows, swartbles sheep, Exmoor ponies are kept.

Beyond is the fish farm (salmon) which most here view with mixed feelings. It brings employment, but has a dreadful history as an industry of sea bed pollution. It occupies a location in the inner Loch Carron east of the Strome Narrows, so the twice daily tidal flush is far less effective here. We have noticed a specialised ship used for sea lice decontamination by physical means, rather than chemical or pharmaceutical. So perhaps the industry is starting to clean up a very tarnished reputation.

On the far shore the railway from Inverness to Kyle of Loch Alsh runs at sea level. One of the most scenic railway journeys possible in Britain. Various pullman coached trains, with silver service on board, normally travel this route every week, disgorging hundreds of passengers to be taken to Skye hotels and eateries over night. These have just commenced their visits again as the highland population has with great care and responsibility avoided being much damaged by CO19, and seeks to restart the vital aspects of tourism again.

Some visitors here do not play by the rules with masks and social distancing - ‘oh we have come here to get away from all that’ - has been heard far too often. The risk to our rather fragile communities is therefore racked up. Campervan and rough camping visits have proliferated this year and broken every conceivable civic and CO19 rule, and all manner of decency, leaving some roadside camping locations heaving with filth.

The ash tree here symbolises for me, clean, tenuous live, determined to cling on. Almost every intervention all around appears to compromise this.

It is a daily way marker for me when walking the hill whether up or down or across.

Queens Of The Stone Age, end of the show

it would be difficult to dispel ignorance unless there is freedom to pursue the truth unfettered by fear. With so close a relationship between fear and corruption it is little wonder that in any society where fear is rife corruption in all forms becomes deeply entrenched.

. . . The effort necessary to remain uncorrupted in an environment where fear is an integral part of everyday existence is not immediately apparent to those fortunate enough to live in states governed by the rule of law. Just laws do not merely prevent corruption by meting out impartial punishment to offenders. They also help to create a society in which people can fulfil the basic requirements necessary for the preservation of human dignity without recourse to corrupt practices. Where there are no such laws, the burden of upholding the principles of justice and common decency falls on the ordinary people. It is the cumulative effect on their sustained effort and steady endurance which will change a nation where reason and conscience are warped by fear into one where legal rules exist to promote man's desire for harmony and justice while restraining the less desirable destructive traits in his nature. . . .

Saints, it has been said, are the sinners who go on trying. So free men are the oppressed who go on trying and who in the process make themselves fit to bear the responsibilities and to uphold the disciplines which will maintain a free society. Among the basic freedoms to which men aspire that their lives might be full and uncramped, freedom from fear stands out as both a means and an end. A people who would build a nation in which strong, democratic institutions are firmly established as a guarantee against state-induced power must first learn to liberate their own minds from apathy and fear.

. . . Fearlessness may be a gift but perhaps more precious is the courage acquired through endeavour, courage that comes from cultivating the habit of refusing to let fear dictate one's actions, courage that could be described as 'grace under pressure' - grace which is renewed repeatedly in the face of harsh, unremitting pressure.

~ Freedom from Fear speech, by Aung Sang Suu Kyi, 1990

Washington DC, The Walter E. Washington Convention Center, the afternoon of March 1, 2015. Around one hundred social justice activists affiliated with Code Pink, Jewish Voice For Justice, AVAAZ, US Campaign To End The Israeli Occupation, Boycott From Within, Answer Coaltion and other peace and faith groups demonstrate in front of the Convention Center to protest the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) yearly DC meeting. AIPAC is regarded by many as the most powerful lobbying group in town. AIPAC has a policy agenda that's out of step with the values of most Jewish Americans and other participants in civilized society but they call the tune because our corrupt political culture is fueled by money, not decency. In an act of peaceful civil disobedience, five demonstrators, all women, were arrested for failing to obey police orders to remove themselves from the granite in front of one of the Convention Center's many doorways. They were given three warnings before being arrested. I photographed one of women as she was being lead away in plastic handcuffs. "I'm a Jewish mother!" she proclaimed. I gave her the 'thumbs up'.

Most of the DC cops kept their cool but when some of the demonstrators got in their face a brief scuffle ensued. Some of us locked arms and and helped lift up one of the Code Pink ladies who was almost knocked down onto the steps by a DC officer who lost it.

Unspoilt, peaceful, Georgian country parish church, mostly dating from 1719-20 but built on the foundation of a much older church. From the outside, it is a handsome church, X-plan, with an additional wing at the west end, topped by a belfry tower, containing the ducal retiring rooms. The interior, renovated 1784-5 and re-arranged circa 1870, has a typical presbyterian layout with central pulpit and three galleries. Many of the box pews have a central communion table. The north aisle of the church is taller and more sophisticated, built for the Duke of Queensberry and remaining from the earlier church. Inside the Queensberry Aisle is the real jewel of the church: the most amazing monument for the Queensberry burial vault, a baroque mural monument and free-standing baldacchino carved in 1695 by John van Nost to the design of James Smith who was also architect of the later church. A riot of swagged fabric, garlands of flowers, urns, barley-sugar columns, cherubs, skulls and pediments, all in gleaming white marble. 'There are few buildings in which baroque magnificence and presbyterian decency are so happily combined.' (George Hay, Architecture of Scottish Post-Reformation Churches). The churchyard contains some fine 17th-19th century stone monuments, many with classical ornament, including the martyr's monument to Daniel MacMichael and the 1685 monument to the children of William Lukup, Master of Works at nearby Drumlanrig.

Of all the photos I took at the Wisconsin protests, this is probably my favorite. I took it March 25 near the Capitol Square, and when I think about the Walker Recall that starts tomorrow, it's the photo I think of most often. It seems to sum up the dedication of those thousands of individuals who fought for something larger than themselves, who turned the battle for simple fairness and decency into a family affair.

Millions of dollars are going to be spent by Walker's corporate allies and sponsors in trying to smear the opposition. They'll be playing for keeps, trying to portray Walker's opponents as crybabies, childish troublemakers and malcontents, bad losers and dirty hippie liberals.

Ignore the propaganda. This is the face of the Wisconsin protests -- concerned citizens who are determined to turn Fitzwalkerstan back into the Wisconsin we know and love, to make it a state we can be proud of again.

Frankencow whispered to me, "Hey, come here. I got something I want to tell you."

Afraid of what this might mean, I cautiously approached. "Yes?" I asked.

"I want you to know, the accident wasn't Toonces' fault."

"Oh, really?"

Frankencow blushes a little. "Um yes, really." Her face becomes even more rosy. "We were trying to play like she was cow-tipping, only she couldn't quite get me to fall over."

Intrigued now, I asked, "So how did the car become involved?"

Frankencow looked down at her hooves. She mumbled, but I coudn't hear her.

"Speak up," I said.

"I told her to get the car to help tip me over," she mumbled again, but louder this time. "We just forgot that she really couldn't use the brakes."

What can I say? The cow is a frankencow, so it's not like she's got the best brain. But at least she had the decency to 'fess up, I guess.

Lincoln's Sparrow Melospiza lincolnii

[Edit: Saturday morning while I sat in the chair at the arboretum blind boyscout patch, a child (emotionally a child, but one of Yakima County's oldest comptetive birders by age) came by and scattered seed under the bushes. He didn't even have the decency to ask if I thought that a good idea, the respect to defer to me since I'd been there before he showed up, nor the restraint to keep himself from traipsing around in front of the blind, frightening the birds. He should learn decency. Fortunately he left after ten minutes, motoring off in the golf cart he rode in on.]

Yesterday I heard a White-throated Sparrow singing not far from the Yakima Arboretum blind boyscout patch. This morning I got to see a White-striped White-throated Sparrow there. My friend Jim reminded me that I'd identified the one I found here last fall as a Tan-striped (based on the dark malar marks). Maybe that was in error, or maybe today's is a different individual. I'd seen that same "Tan-striped" bird as recently as last month. Today I was feeling ill, so off my game, but glad to be sitting in the chair there in front of the blind. This Lincoln's Sparrow was the treat of the morning. I think they're the most beautiful sparrow. I'm hoping Jim will get photos. [Edit: Jim did indeed get beautiful photos: www.flickr.com/photos/jlcummins_photography/32576632837/i...]

There's lots of seed that's been scattered at the base of the bushes. Scores of House Sparrows are loving that food in cover. Their din and jumpiness sure mucks with the native species and with me hearing them. I didn't see any of the banded birds there today. Please DON'T SPREAD SEED UNDER THE BUSHES. That only attracts many house sparrows, to the detriment of native birds.

My original photos have embedded GPS time/date/location -- proving when & where I took the photos. I would never falsify a checklist, nor info under my photos, and never have done so. I would never cheat on my Big Day, never trick someone into helping me cheat on my Big Day, never illegally call in a Spotted Owl, never trespass. Those practices would be the antithesis of my bird watching, and are clear violations of the ABA Code of Birding Ethics. I was used by Yakima County Big Day listers on May 11, 2013, and don't want others' enjoyment of birding to be harmed in the same way. If you find that you're wrong, whether in a bird identification or in your birding ethics, correct it. Be careful. Be ethical. Be truthful. Beware of being mis-lead.
