Lydd-on-Sea is a modern village, mostly built after World War II, which consists mainly of bungalows built along the Dungeness coastal road south of Greatstone, Kent, England. The Southern Railway opened a railway station here in 1937 but was closed in 1967. Lydd-on-Sea is part of the ecclesiastical parish of Lydd, now several miles distant, which once had access to the sea.

An island in a lake (created by gravel extraction) slightly to the northwest of Lydd-on-Sea is the site of a collection of sound mirrors designed by Dr William Sansome Tucker, to detect the approach of enemy aircraft, in the years before radar had been developed.

Eschscholzia californica This poppy lives in dry places beside roads and on waste land, flowering from October to February in NZ. It has fused sepals, but most members of the Poppy family have separate sepals. Known for its bright orange colours, I have an albino colour the first I have seen. Most poppies also have large, showy petals, but do not usually produce nectar - insects visit the flower to collect the pollen. Many members of this family produce poisonous latex. The opium poppy is the only economically important member of this family, as the drug opium is obtained from its latex. It is not often that a plant causes a war, but this happened in 1839-42, when the so called Opium war broke out between Britain and China, as a result of disagreements over the trading of Opium in Britain. This war led to the ceding of Hong Kong to Britain, due to be returned to China in 1997. The seed of the opium poppy are used in baking, but are harmless as they do not contain opium. Poppy seed oil is used in foodstuffs and in paint and in soap making.

The things that I have lost and found.

As usual it wasn't the picture in my mind's eye, but it was what I got.

I very rarely write a lot about my pictures but since this is a special occasion I decided to expand my title a little (quite a lot really).

Those things that were lost have been mixed blessings…

…the baby weight.

…my married status.

…my mother, who chose to break the remaining fragile thread of our connection.

…And P, for whom friendship was all too difficult.

And though things were lost, many more were found…

…A growing passion for photography, my perfect hobby.

…A new job, about which I am ever hopeful.

…A sense of peace with my status as a mother.

…A clarity about who my true friends are. I won’t name you all but you have been there for me over the years

…Some new and some rediscovered friendships:

- The wonderful women of HPAD (some of whom I knew in “that other place” but plenty I did not) who I have supported me in so many ways this year, encouraging my photography and listening to my woes when I had no other ear to turn to.

- James, who was lost to me for some years but now returned. May 2009 be a year of Joy for you, in all possible ways.

- Antony, it was worth the effort. I’ll keep trying if you will.

- Jason, companion in insomnia, strange boy and photographic inspiration.

2008 has been a long and difficult year in so many ways. But, I made it through, and as a wise friend once said to me… “nobody ever said it would be easy”. And in the words of Emily Dickinson:

FOR each ecstatic instant

We must an anguish pay

In keen and quivering ratio

To the ecstasy.

So, here’s to a few more ecstatic instants in 2009, even if they cost me in anguish I can’t help thinking it is better to be acutely alive than comfortably numb.
