Zebras are several species of African equids (horse family) united by their distinctive black and white striped coats. Their stripes come in different patterns, unique to each individual. They are generally social animals that live in small harems to large herds.

The Plains Zebra (Equus quagga) is the most common, and about six subspecies were distributed across much of southern and eastern Africa.

Zebras have excellent eyesight. It is believed that they can see in color.[citation needed] Like most ungulates, the zebra's eyes are on the sides of its head, giving it a wide field of view. Zebras also have night vision, although not as advanced as that of most of their predators.

Two nice pieces of "Ostalgie" acquired this weekend - an original Interflug Boarding Card for a flight from Dresden to Berlin Schonefeld (believed to be on a Tu-134) and a lovely picture post card of Rostock Town Hall from the DDR era showing lots of Trabants, Wurtburgs and Ladas. Ah, how I miss the Cold War!

An abandoned nightclub in the former GDR, where western politicians or business people were brought. in a small room i even found an acoustic surveillance system. i took fotos of it, but unfortunately they came out dark and blurry ...

The Brown Belt

Until 1989, the almost 1,400-kilometre-long inner-German border (also known as the German-German border) had massive fortifications to prevent the inhabitants of the GDR from visiting the FRG or permanently leaving the GDR for the West. From the north-south route from Oberrieden to just before Bad Sooden-Allendorf, travellers had a good view of the inhuman brown belt running parallel to the Werra.

The two 140s have just passed through the Schürzeberg tunnel and Oberrieden station with a coal train bound for Bebra. The watchtower at the top of the mountain was already visible here www.flickr.com/photos/199858026@N05/53706725522/in/datepo....

The village on the right-hand side of the picture is called Lindewerra. A bridge led from there across the river, which was blown up on 8 April 1945 during the retreat of the German Wehrmacht. A watchtower stood on the surviving eastern bridgehead and the village was hermetically sealed off. Lindewerra was located in the restricted area, which could only be visited with special authorisation by reliable persons from the GDR.

Since November 1989, after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the peaceful revolution in the GDR, the border fortifications have been dismantled and transformed into a special eco-zone known as the Green Belt. The bridgeheads have since been restored and connected by a steel segment. The Werra Bridge was reopened to traffic in 1999.

Wilhelm Pieck Str 11, built 1966-1969. A smaller cousin of the main store in Alexanderplatz in Berlin.

I had left Erfurt after a few days, registered with the police there, and was now en route to Eisenach by way of crossing and re-crossing the Thueringer Wald. Between Erfurt and Schleusingen a DDR Volksarmee reservist opposite me had consumed 4 (FOUR) large bottles of beer, opening one full bottle with another. The descent from the summit to Schleusingen was accompanied by continuous squealing of the brakes on the steep descent. I think a class 119 Romanian made diesel was in charge. The final leg was from Meiningen to Eisenach. Somewhere in the middle of this was a bus ride.

Just saw this in the Trib. Knew the Kennedy family wanted to build a high rise here. Well the plans are out. Just a reminder of what will be lost when/if these ugly towers are built. The North side of the river will be blocked by these
