**Quarai** - National Register of Historic Places Ref # 66000498, date listed 19661015
1 mi. S of Punta de Agua
Mountainair, NM (Torrance County)
A National Historic Landmark (www.nps.gov/subjects/nationalhistoriclandmarks/list-of-nh...).
Quarai is located at the intersection of several draws in the gently rolling land close to the eastern base of the Manzano Mountains about a mile west of Punta de Agua, New Mexico.
The earliest known occupation of Quarai is represented by a small, mound, measuring 75 feet by 100 feet, south of the larger ruins complex. Adobe walls have been noted to occur within this mound. Judging from the pottery types which this area has yielded, archeologists believe that occupation first occurred about 1250 A.D. and continued until the end of the 14th century. The area then appears to have been uninhabited or only sporadically occupied for about 200 years. (1)
The square kiva located inside the convento of the Quarai Mission is an interesting riddle. What is a subterranean Puebloan religious structure doing within a Spanish mission? And why is a regularly circular kiva in this case square. Just like the kiva inside the convento at Abo, we do not really have a good answer for these questions.
What we do know is that this square kiva was built sometime between 1622 and 1645. This would have been at the same time that the Quarai convento and church were being constructed. The placement of this kiva exactly in the center of the larger patio room suggests that this was not a kiva that existed prior to the construction of the convento, but rather was built in this location on purpose. What this may suggests is that the square kiva was built under the supervision of the Spanish missionaries possibly as a conversion technique. The Spanish recognized that in conversion you would be less successful if you simply disregarded the previous religion.
As for the shape of the kiva, the square design is actually common amongst the western Pueblo groups. This would include the Hopi and Zuni, two tribes that trace their ancestry to the Salinas Pueblo Missions. (2)

Grade ll* listed.
There is a pair of ancient oak stalls, c14. The origin of these is unknown. (The oak stalls could possibly be from Roche Abbey in Rotherham.)
They feature 2 misericord hinged seats with a carved face on one and a green man on the other. Carvings on the elbows have faces and animals on them.
There is also a bench which looks like it was originally a stall with misericords. The centre section has been removed (you can see a gap), but they have fine carved elbows at each end.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: I instantaneously recognized this Daphne when she turned up in the 2024 "Fangtastic February Lot." This group of dollies was a very unexpected, and very appreciated surprise gift. Daphne was one of the older dolls from the small box. The majority of them were from the 2010s and onward. Therefore, she didn't have a stitch of her original clothing. Although she looked quite dapper in the 2021 sunflower themed Barbie fashion pack she sported. I saw this line in stores ALL the time as a kid. My sister bought Skipper as Velma, being a huge Skipper buff. I do recall contemplating buying Barbie as Daphne. I liked that she was very cartoonish in appearance, but versatile enough for regular play. I've only seen a few episodes of Scooby-Doo in my life, so the correlation to the show didn't intrigue me much. The Scooby-Doo gummy snacks however were always my faves growing up (and the new recipe these days is even better). Daphne's copper hair and side glance make her spectacularly beautiful and also quirky. I'd love to find her original dress someday, but she was so easy to pick an alternative outfit for!

Military quarters in the Victoria Barracks. In the early 20th century, as the Royal Navy urged the importance of sea power and demanded room to expand, it was agreed that part of the army land north of Queen's Road, including the North Barracks and part of the Wellington Barracks near the waterfront, were to be surrendered to the Royal Navy. At the same time, a series of new buildings were to be erected in the western part of the Victoria Barracks. The quarters block shown in the photographs, completed in 1909, was one of the new barrack buildings erected during this period.
