Date night. What is your favorite spot to enjoy when out with your significant other in your city? For us, its a wonderful cafe that stays open late and is where all of the actors that perform locally hang out after show. Each little seatign area is a curtained seperate area with little red lights that provide a warm glow. Always such a buzz of conversation, gloeeful laughing and a host of smells tantilazing the nose. Great place to stay in on a chilly foggy night such as this one.

The Sun has reached the Panamint Range at Badwater in Death Valley National Park. The warm red glow on the towering peaks is reflected in the waters of Lake Manley, the ephemeral waters at the lowest place in North America which was reborn again after record rainfall back in November. Along the shore, what appears to be two separate couples take in the spectacle. Lake Manley has had quite a few rebirths in recent years which seems to be an increasingly frequent occurrence. When the lake is here it is spectacular, and is a mighty fine place to spend a morning with someone who also appreciates the grandeur of the desert.

You really can't be outside in Southern California and not look up and see palm trees. All varieties, all sizes, they're on every street and in every park. I've never thought of them as real trees, more a separate thing all of their own.

Date palms have a long association with human societies. Sweet and long-lasting, dates have been relished by people for thousands of years (but I don't advise putting relish on them). This grove I found between North Shore and Mecca, California, north of the Salton Sea.
Archaeologists found 2000-year-old dates in Masada, Israel, and got some of them to sprout. This implies that cells in the dates stayed active enough to fix DNA damage continuously over millennia. Some of these "Methuselah trees" have grown up and are producing new fruit.
