A couple stopped to take in the light show before their planned night out. Great way to start the romance!!
This part of Bodmin Moor, near Minions, a few miles north of Liskeard, has the remains of three neolithic stone circles known as The Hurlers, as well as several individual standing stones such as the one pictured. They are thought to date from around 1500 BC. Although there have been many theories, no-one knows for certain what their purpose was.
Tin and copper mining took place throughout this area until early in the 20th century, and many of the engine houses and other remains can still be seen. The engine house in the distance housed a 50-inch pumping engine, installed in the 1880s. The mine shaft it served reached 720 feet and was part of the South Phoenix Mine. The engine house is now a visitor centre.

Dating largely from the 14th century, St Andrew’s has a striking tower crowned by two octagonal stages, reminiscent of nearby Ely Cathedral. The church stands in a village once prosperous enough to earn the name “Golden Sutton” in 1599. Its clock was later maintained by a local council known as the Ten Men, a reminder of the church’s central role in village life.

According to the date stone on the gable end of this former farm cottage, it was built in 1668 - two years after the Great Fire of London. At the rear of the cottage is the farmyard, with outbuildings and an ancient barn which is home to a flock of doves. Instead of a dovecote, nesting holes are built into the side of the barn. The beautiful grade II-listed cottage is our home, while we also have a holiday home in the north of England near the border between Lancashire and Cumbria. This provides easy access to the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, both of which are a 30-minute drive away.
