Palms in our hotel garden on Djerba (Tunisia) with ripening dates. Fresh dates, just from the tree, were very sweet and tasty :)
Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) is a species of plant in the Arecaceae family. It does not occur in the wild, but is cultivated in many countries around the world. The place of origin of the date palm is uncertain because of long cultivation. Fossil records show that the date palm has existed for at least 50 million years. It is one of the oldest cultivated trees, cultivated by the peoples of the ancient Near East: Sumerians, Canaanites, Chaldeans, and Assyrians. In countries with a warm climate, the date palm is grown in gardens, avenues, and parks. The date palm is cultivated in arid and semi-arid regions characterized by long, hot summers, a lack of rainfall, and very low relative humidity during the ripening period. It can also withstand strong, hot winds. The fruit (date) consists of 70% carbohydrates (primarily sugars), making it one of the most nutritious natural foods available to humans.

Palmy daktylowe przy naszym hotelu na Dżerbie w Tunezji z dojrzewającymi daktylami. Takie świeże, prosto z drzewa były bardzo smaczne :)
Daktylowiec właściwy (Phoenix dactylifera), palma daktylowa, daktylowe drzewo – gatunek rośliny z rodziny arekowatych. W stanie dzikim nie występuje, jest natomiast uprawiany w wielu krajach świata. Miejsce pochodzenia palmy daktylowej jest nieznane ze względu na długą historię uprawy. Skamieniałości wskazują, że palma daktylowa istnieje od co najmniej 50 milionów lat. Jest jednym z najdawniej uprawianych drzew. Uprawiany był przez ludy starożytnego Bliskiego Wschodu: Sumerów, Kananejczyków, Chaldejczyków, Asyryjczyków. W krajach o ciepłym klimacie daktylowiec jest uprawiany w ogrodach, alejach, parkach. Palma daktylowa uprawiana jest w regionach suchych i półsuchych, które charakteryzują się długim i gorącym latem, brakiem opadów i bardzo niskim poziomem wilgotności względnej podczas okresu dojrzewania. Może też wytrzymać silny i gorący wiatr. Owoc (daktyl) składa się w 70% z węglowodanów (głównie z cukrów), co sprawia, że jest to jeden z najbardziej pożywnych naturalnych produktów spożywczych dostępnych dla człowieka.
