Two not so patient dogs on an unexpected 'blind date' whilst waiting for their owners to finish what they were doing in the local bookshop. Not sure how successful the date was - the black clearly not that interested.

Calgary must have drawn the short straw when it came to the date for their Pride Parade... the September Labour Day Weekend is more a signal for winter's begin than the ending of summer... Nonetheless, the coolish weather did not deter Calgarians who love our amazing diversity from turning out to enjoy a wonderful parade. It was deeply touching to see so many individuals, families, parents and children, all decked out to say YAY! to diversity. Even after the parade, walking back to the car, I saw hundreds of flags, socks, etc magically spreading out into the city, as if driven like snow in a blizzard by an awesome fairy queen! Although it is essentially our LGBTQ Parade, many other groups and even businesses have joined in to really accentuate what diversity truly means. Along with our community march a lot of other communities who realize that love, joy, and celebrating who you actually are is so much more important than religious or political dogma. Kudos go our stunning Filipino Community which shares this day to celebrate our mutual fabulousness and it was great to see so many in the parade! As a fundamentally shy person myself, and Larry even more so, I find this parade such a unique opportunity to highlight truly beautiful faces - I hope you spend some time exploring the wonderful diversity of faces I was able to capture in almost every image. Celebrating diversity (as opposed to grudgingly tolerating it) is a highly political act. Our current government in Alberta, with its increasingly cruel policies and initiatives, seems to be attacking our hard-won acceptance of diversity, and wouldn't dare showing its face here...

Visiting the llama and alpaca farm was an eye opener-so many different colours and impressions! Some were elegant and groomed, while others explored and wanted to eat my camera...
Almost all seemed to be flossing with hay in their teeth! :-)
A storm in 2000 blew down this old Mulberry tree and after it was cut at the stump, we noticed the distinct rings on the tree and were able to date them.
The tree was 70 years old.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: The Miko doll in the middle of this photo is one of my dearest friends. We have been together since 2003 or 2004, when I rescued her from a random lot of dolls at the flea market. She was one of many childhood dolls that was purchased in bulk. Back in the day, Colleen and I began to find a passion for buying entire lots of Barbies. It all started when Colleen wanted certain 1987 mold Skipper dolls we would find, but the sellers wanted to sell their entire stash of dolls together, and not part them out. Dad, who spoiled us rotten, would buy all the dolls, so Colleen could get her hands on Skipper. After a while, we really enjoyed finding random discoveries in the lots and adding tons of unique friends to our collection. That is how I ended up with my first Island Friend Miko. Back then, I thought Miko was a Kira doll. But as an adult collector, I quickly sorted out my mistake. She looks so much better now than she did circa 2003/2004. I remember how her long, kanekalon hair used to frizzy up into a puffy ponytail. No matter how much I brushed her hair, it always looked unkempt and voluminous. Plus, she always looked a bit sad and vulnerable, and those leg splotches only added to her forlorn appearance. I loved transforming her into a beauty with the techniques I learned as an adult collector (it's amazing what hot water can do for doll hair). She's hardly recognizable, and yet she'll always be my sad little Miko doll. She's one of my favorite Asian dollies in my collection--in fact, she might be my most special (I love her even more than Ocean Friends Kira).
Miko number two came from a charity store--she is the doll on the right. You are probably perplexed by how different looking these dolls are. Yes, they are both Island Fun Miko dolls, they are just manufactured in different countries (see my facial closeups for reference). Dolls from the 80s are notorious for being produced in many starkly different variations. This girl looks most like the Island Fun Miko dolls I've seen in collector books. She has that signature curly hair too (it's saran, so it held its style for all these years). When I found her, she was in a large plastic container at a charity store. It was during the spring of 2017, when Colleen and I stopped in at this store after my dentist appointment. Miko and Ski Fun Ken were the two oldest dolls in said container, save the two 1970s Dawn dolls we also rescued. We think that Ski Fun Ken and Miko probably originated from the same place, since they were both in decent condition for their age. Granted, someone made the mistake of brushing through Miko's curly hair and making it into an Afro. But this was easily remedied with a boil wash. I had almost no doubt in my mind when I bought her that she was another Island Fun Miko, but I was excited about owning such a unique variation. She's definitely the prettier of my two gals, but my first, shabby friend will always have a special place in my heart!
The Miko on the far left stole my breath away in 2024. Colleen and I weren't having any luck at the local flea market one early November Sunday. We had hoped to bump into a seller we'd bought dolls from the week prior (she promised to bring more in). But either we missed the woman somehow, or she wasn't set up that day. Anyways, we wandered into the building we only check out a few times a year. There was a small chance we might find something cool. Well, we found something AMAZING...a case of 16 80s/90s Barbies. They were from an estate clean out, based on what the seller told us. All were wearing clothes, most dressed in their own factory attire. I immediately drooled over this Miko, who was donning her swimsuit. It was $20 for all of them...a bargain we couldn't resist. We dubbed this the "Great 80s Lot." This gal puts my other two to shame, in terms of her beauty. I love that she too is a saran variant.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: One day in early 2003, Dad took my sister and me to the KB Toys located in our mall. I saw a Travel in Style Barbie while we were there. I fell in love with her gorgeous face and hairstyle. Even though there was an African American version available that day, I opted to get the blonde doll which was rather unusual for me. I was so captivated by the blonde, I decided to get her. Plus, I thought she came with a bunch of goodies--extra outfits, shoes, and accessories! I still remember counting out exactly twelve dollars in change for her. Sometimes Dad would let us take all his change to pay for toys (not that he didn't buy us stuff with cash too). I named my Travel in Style doll "Heidi" and ever since that day, she was one of my favorites. Since my previous favorite doll, 2001 Sparkling Jasmine, was starting to show her age from so much play, it was great that I found another doll to shower with affection. Plus, Heidi was on the 1999 body mold, which fit more of the fashions that were currently sold in stores. She could properly wear all those awesome outfits that I struggled to use on Jasmine. However, not long after getting her, I made the STUPID decision to cut her hair off. It was an incredibly impulsive act that I regretted immediately. I recall being seized by the random desire to hack off her tresses after seeing a stylish blonde bob on an actress while watching t.v. I vividly remember pulling Heidi out of the drawer she was kept in and taking her into the bathroom for the haircut. Heidi's long, beautiful, platinum hair was no longer. I cried about the whole ordeal even though it was my own fault. Dad felt so bad for me, that he took me out shopping for a new Travel in Style Barbie. However she was nowhere to be found. She had already been out of date when I first found her at KB Toys. In those few months, she had entirely vanished from all our local stores, including other KB Toys locations. Since there was nothing else Dad could do, he very kindly bought me a Travel in Style Barbie off eBay. This doll in the photo is "Heidi #2." She came from the UK since there weren't any listings for her in the US. Despite her origin, the price of the doll wasn't terrible (although I'm sure after shipping and import duties, Dad paid a ton for her). I remember the day Heidi arrived in the mail like it was yesterday. For some reason, I was in the shower (even though I have always been a person who showered in the evenings, for some reason I was bathing in the middle of the day). I heard Dad come in with a package, so I quickly got out of the shower and got dressed. I was so ecstatic and grateful that the precious cargo arrived safely. She had to make an overseas journey. I knew I would cherish and appreciate this Heidi even more than the first. We went out that afternoon to go shopping and I took my new Heidi with me. Dad stopped at the ATM to get some money. While we were in the bank drive through, Dad took Heidi and made her "drive" the car and talk. He then decided to throw my BRAND NEW DOLL out the window and drive off. Dad loved making jokes like this, and most of the time I found them funny (although there were a few incidents when Dad's jokes accidentally caused damage to a doll...ahem, poor Chandler). Dad backed up the car and grabbed Heidi off the pavement....needless to say I was NOT happy about it! Now I can laugh about the whole situation since Heidi was not harmed in any way. I've come to treasure this second Travel in Style Barbie more than first (who I no longer have because she became a body donor since her haircut was not salvageable). She is probably my most sentimental Barbie in my entire collection.
I was besotted with the doll on the right, the moment we first met. Despite her quite frazzled appearance, she was immediately distinguishable to me as my beloved 2001 Travel in Style Barbie. I dubbed her Hildi, so her name goes well with my childhood doll. It's amazing having two of these ladies once again...although I never had two with their full length factory tresses at the same time before. What makes Hildi extra special is that she was a gift. In March 2023, a massive package (split into two boxes) arrived at my doorstep. Inside we found 166 dolls--some in perfect condition, others who were in dire need of help. Hildi was somewhere in the middle in terms of quality and condition. But I knew she could easily be revived. I had loads of spare outfits for her too, what with buying two of Travel in Style Barbie as a kid. She was part of the "Mountains of Monsters Lot," and will always be one of the most memorable dollies from said bin. It's also heart warming having the "American" version of her again (since my other doll originated from the UK). They have subtly different faces, although I doubt that has anything to do with the countries they were released in.

Had a wonderful evening out last night with someone I met a few weeks ago. We had a lovely meal followed by a couple of cocktails. We chatted openly all night and it really was a pleasant evening 💋💋💋💋❤️

When it comes down to it, if you’re in a happy relationship, it doesn’t really matter where you met. Years ago meeting on the internet was creepy. The internet was full of sweaty, balding, foot-fetish-loving men who lived in their parents basement and played dungeons and dragons who used the internet to prey on women (okay, so not much has changed). And back the day (which is like pre-2005) you’d meet a potential mate through mutual friends, college classes, at the coffee shop, church, work, whistling to on the construction site etc. As a wedding photographer, I always try to sneak in, “so how did you guys meet?” More and more are from online dating. Some people find shame in that, but if you’re happy, so what.
Because of the internet, I think people are becoming less social. They're more friendly online, and less outgoing in public, and engage in less social activities.
So if you’re single, don’t give up hope. I mean if people can get married after meeting on Chat Roulette then anything is possible!
