PERSONAL FUN FACT: I didn't grow up watching the Barbie movies like Swan Lake. By the time these films became popularized, I was eleven/twelve and not as interested in watching Barbie movies. However, it was around this time frame that I found my passion for the dolls. I wouldn't say that I have a specific fondness for Barbie movie dolls...although over the years I have amassed quite the collection. However, The Princess and the Pauper and Swan Lake dollies will always hold a special place in my heart and memories. It all started with the African American Odette, on the left side of this photo. Dad took Colleen and I out to do our usual weekend toy shopping sometime in the spring of 2003. This particular occasion, we ventured out to Toys 'R' Us, which we frequented less than the much cheaper (more exciting) KB Toys. I was very excited to find a new selection of Barbies to choose from. Most of the local stores in our area did not ever get brand new dolls right away--there was a delay most of the time. However, Toys 'R' Us was known for getting shipments of newly released dolls rather quickly. On this occasion, I spotted a hoard of Swan Lake merchandise, and was immediately drawn to it. The dolls' mystical dresses and gorgeous faces were irresistible. I noticed in the throng of dolls that there was an African American Ken. I glanced at the back of his packaged and spotted the rest of the AA line in an advertisement. "Behold," I thought to myself, "this is surely the most gorgeous African American Barbie I've ever seen! I MUST have her!!!" I looked high and low for the AA Odette, but she was nowhere to be found. At this point, I had a one track mind--screw the other dolls, I NEEDED this beautiful Odette in my life immediately. Dad caught on to my search and decided to ask one of the employees. They looked up Odette for us, and concluded that she wouldn't be in stores for another ten days or so (if memory serves me correctly). Dad promised to take me back when she came out, and I most likely got another doll in her stead, although I can't remember who anymore. This was really the only time in my childhood that we made such a commitment in advance--I never waited for a doll to come out before. Sure enough, when the date in June finally came, we were back at Toys 'R' Us to collect my dream Odette. Upon seeing her, I admit I was somewhat disappointed. The stock images had shown this doll have a darker complexion, whereas this girl is more carmel colored. She was pretty too, but I loved dolls with especially dark skin tones. Either way, I was not about to let this little snafu get in the way of my enjoyment. I dubbed her Beyonce, after the singer I was ever so obsessed with (not because I liked her music, but because I was convinced she was the prettiest woman on earth when I was eleven). My AA Stylin' Pup Barbie lost her title as Beyonce (sort of--I still called her Beyonce, but Odette became THE Beyonce). I remember dressing her up in my favorite early 2000s fashion pack pieces and making her date Leroy, Water Jewel Magic Aladdin. For a time, she rivaled the likes of Sparkling Jasmine and Travel in Style Barbie (aka Heidi), who were my current favorites. Ever since that fateful day at Toys 'R' Us, the Swan Lake line has meant something special to me. In the years since, especially after losing Dad in 2012, my beloved Beyonce has grown to mean so much more to me.

Because my first AA Odette was so near and dear to my heart, it's only natural that I'd be excited to find a second. The doll on the right side of this photo joined the family nearly ten years after the first--sometime in May 2013. It was opening day at the flea market that year, and we found a container stocked full of Barbies from the late 90s/early 2000s. Many were ethnic variations--and there were usually both blonde and African American doll in the lot. For instance, I got a blonde Odette AND Solange, the AA gal as we named her. She is from the "60 Doll Bin" and although she was a dupe, she was definitely a favorite. She isn't as well preserved as my childhood friend, who was regularly groomed. In fact, I'd say of my favorites from that time frame, Beyonce fared exceedingly well (she didn't bald like Jasmine or get her hair cut like Heidi #1). Despite her slightly less than perfect appearance, I love Solange deeply, and I think it's really awesome that I have a second AA Odette in the family!

Shot this to celebrate my friend's 20-yr. anniversary

IMPORTANT NOTES: Jody dolls were labeled either "The Country Girl" or "An Old Fashioned Girl." It appears that there were several dresses that were available on Jody.

PERSONAL FUN FACT written by my sister: Meet Ma McEntire! Reba finally has a mother. We'd always pictured Reba's folks living on an old-fashioned farm and living very much like the Amish. (The idea of Dracula meeting her parents on the farm has always been something we've talked about, since getting our Barbie barn.) We hadn't yet settled on the perfect Ma for Reba and, when Shelly said Jody was an old-fashioned redhead, she fit the bill. We actually wound up with TWO Jody dolls to play Reba's mother, this one is dressed more for doing farm work, like milking the cow (which the Jody barn did not come with, though it did come with a milking stool) or cooking in the kitchen. The other wears an eyelet dress, more appropriate for sitting in the parlor, going to church, or going off to town with Pa. We got the two girls with the big lot of four playsets that Shelly found on Mercari in 2022. She has an eye for finding really cool things. We didn't know Jody, or her amazing furniture for that matter, even existed until the day Shelly made the purchase. This was the first of the two Jodys that I got acquainted with. She has a prettier face, and I don't think my initial reason for thinking that was because her face was less dingy. I find the other girl has a more pinched look to her face and this one has a wider eyed expression. (Not that they are actually "different"--they are very much the same doll repackaged in fashions, but it's amazing how different two of the same doll can really look.) I like her a lot and think she is absolutely adorable! She looks, especially because of this dress, like she stepped right out of Little House on the Prairie!

BARHEE DATE

Large, round Barhee Dates were brought to California from Basra, Iraq in 1913.

When picked in their yellow stage, they are referred to as KHALAL Dates and they taste semi-sweet and are as crisp as apples.

They are usually picked and packaged on the stem in 30-pound boxes and then they are shipped by air on the same day as harvested, to assure freshness.

Barhee Dates are harvested only in August and September. When Barhee dates are picked in their brown stage, they are softer and sweeter.

======================================================

The US Date industry began in the 1890s with the first importation of named variety offshoots from North Africa and the Middle East.

From 1890 to 1929, the U.S. Department of Agriculture imported 1,076 lots of date offshoots containing about 20,000 individuals of standard date varieties.

Other introductions were made by private growers. Medjool was one of the last varieties to be introduced, in 1927. Imported offshoots were grown primarily in Arizona and California.

Commercial production commenced in 1912 with the first harvesting and marketing of Deglet Noor fruits. California emerged as the major producing state owing to more favorable climatic conditions.

At present, there are only 16 imported commercial varieties in the USA, originating from four (4) countries: Algeria, Egypt, Iraq and Morocco.

Most prominent commercial varieties in the USA are,

Barhee / Barhi,

Deglet Noor,

Halawy,

Khadrawy,

Medjool,

Thoory

and

Zahidi.

By 1955, the US had selected and reproduced 40 American varieties from the imported varieties and since that time a few more American varieties have been added.

On a small scale, nine (9) American varieties currently are grown commercially, the three (3) most important are;

Empress, derived from Thoory

Honey, derived from Thoory

Blond Beauty, derived from Deglet Noor.

Date Palm germplasm is preserved in four collections, two in California and two in Arizona; together they include nearly all of the current imported commercial varieties, but are inadequate for the American commercial varieties.

Date production in 2003 amounted to 16,662 metric ton on a total of 2,145 hectare.

Deglet Noor is the most important commercial date variety, representing about 70-75% of production;

Medjool is second with 20-25%;

All other commercial varieties account for only a few percent of total production.

From a broad base of a total of about 200 imported and American varieties, the United States date industry is now narrowly focused on 2 primary and 23 secondary commercial varieties.

======================================================

Florida's high humidity is not conducive at all in producing Dates with high flesh-to-seed ratio. As a result, the Dates are large with big seed but very little flesh.

And that is why California's arid Coachella Valley at the fringes of the Mojave Desert had become one of the best places in the world to grow superior quality Dates including the Medjool, the most well known and the most desired.

Date trees, primarily the Medjool cultivar, are being used increasingly now in Florida not as a source of edible Dates but as majestic landscape plants.

I had to share this old-fashioned recipe. I might make it myself, but I would cut back on the sugar. The recipe is from B. Dylan Hollis' cookbook Baking Yesteryear. You can also see Dylan on YouTube: www.youtube.com/c/bdylanhollis. He's so funny when he cooks. I get such a kick out of him.

Thanks Dave I had a wonderful time

Progetto 23 Ritratti

The Grade I Listed Church of St Martin in Blyton a village in West Lindsey, Lincolnshire.

Sections of the aisle date from the Early Old English era and lower parts of the Perpendicular tower are Norman. The north wall of the chancel bears brass plate commemorating two children of Sir John Wray who died in 1613 and 1615. Wray was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1614 and 1648 and supported the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War.

The church was heavily restored in 1866. The chancel was rebuilt in 1877 by Richard, 9th Earl of Scarborough but retains a window from the 13th century. The nave, aisles and roof were restored in 1880-81. The tower was repaired by Sir H. B. Bacon Bart in 1891-2 and 2 bells added to the original set.
