Our first non severe thunderstorms of the 2016 season.
I've been itching to get out to capture some Nebraska stormscapes. I was totally satisfied with that afternoons storm front that passed through about 6:30pm.
Not bad for my first batch of storm captures 2016!

Almost mid July in Nebraska. This means ... Boilermaker...
It was 102 when I left Kearney. Hot Humid and uncomfortable. But when storms come, I'm not going to miss these special photographic opportunities. You can always count me in with camera in hand.
Had a moderate threat for severe weather on this day to the south and east of South Central Nebraska. Knowing this, Hwy 6 east through Hastings and then South of Clay center was battle ground for storms to develop. I was in position, but this day would be a bust as the storms would cap and no strong development came out of these storm cells.
I took advantage of what light & storm there was.... and went to town. Click Click Click!

Sunset on a remote 4 wheel drive road deep in the park. I drove my jeep here and stayed the night. I set up a telescope in an old campsite about 10 feet from the road to watch the stars and an excellent production of the Perseid meteor showers.
Unfortunately at about 3am several baja-style racers came flying through here with their mega lightbars on high beam, and bathing me and my telescope in dust. lol.

Now set and in position to catch this severe storm. It would one of the best so far of April 2019.
South of Phillipsburg Kansas just a few miles, I have my place to stop and its on East Thunder Road... I'm Serious...
Down in the valley with open sky and a few telephone poles on the left side of the road. Overall a great place to get some wide angle views as this storm approached!

We'd been sat in the sun watching the tide come in, turned and walked over the sand dunes and saw this ominous sky!

The immense power of the monsoon, captured in a single frame. A massive, churning canopy of dark, teal-tinted storm clouds dominates the sky, signaling an impending downpour. Against this brooding, dramatic backdrop, a pair of tiny birds takes flight, their delicate silhouettes contrasting sharply with the overwhelming scale of the weather system. Framed by the dark foliage on the right, this image perfectly encapsulates the ominous, atmospheric beauty of a gathering storm.
A thunderstorm backdrop on a wealthy person's home in Boulder, Colorado. This storm passed over this lighted area about 30 minutes before.
The trees behind the house are all cottonwoods.
The "farmers' are pretty rich and probably get government subsidies! Ah, but let's not get into politics.
a few days ago I looked out of the window and saw this amazing rainbow, I went outside and couldn't believe my luck. I don't remember seeing one as complete as this one. it was raining at the time as you can tell from the spots on the image but I am not too bothered about those... I was just pleased I managed to get it all (nearly) in the frame.
earlier that day I had been driving when I saw part of a double rainbow and by the time I had stopped and got my mobile out the opportunity of shooting canada geese flying across a double one had passed, so this one was a nice surprise, not quite the same but still...

Watch the Video of that afternoon on Flickr
Hail Core was on top of me on that first storm to the north of the City... I deiced to bail & go pick up my daughter, as she had called & said I want to go...I scooped her up & proceeded south of the city about 20 miles between Minden & Axtell Nebraska!
The 2nd supcell of the day was coming at us from Dawson County. @ That time that would be direcly to our west northwest. This storm was a fast mover. The first storm of the afternoon was only moving at 14 mph... So we didn't have much time to take snaps.
Though I did take a lot of snaps ...but I made a rookie play & didn't reset this focus from manual. I can be a knucklehead sometimes with I'm in the thick of things....
These were the final images of that afternoon. The ones in focus... We arrived just minutes ahead of its approach. Just in time to get these phenomenal captures right underneath the base of this monster!!!

These are truly My Best Lightning Captures to date!
An epic night of sunset light and storm light @ twilight. Its almost every storm chasers dreams... or at least, in my own opinion, to get along side of a storm like this, as its firing away some incredible CC & CG every few seconds. What more could you ask for...
I was that Lucky Gut that evening. Just mother nature and I. Close to home after a few long storm chasing jaunts is just fine by me. She was producing and I was capturing every incredible second of this storm.. No Forking Bolt went away that evening without me getting a snap of its presence.. lol
Enjoy this Nebraska Eye Candy!

This was really the first batch of storms that I would call treat. A photographic atmosphere that I just couldn't resist. Parked up on a hill just to the west of the city to get some of these captures of the sunset and storm.
Storm was due west of my location about 15 miles. It was severe warned but it was moving almost due south. I sat on the outskirts of this storm to try to get the best possible captures.

Recovered from that old drive, I honestly thought I would never see these images ever again.
Early June.... conditions this time of year are prime for night storms. Didn't have to chase... just wake up...
It was just plain luck that I got these captures at all that night.
Ever have one of those VERY LONG DAYs... I had crashed out on the couch and about 12:30 am and my son strolled in and woke me up and said... DAD storms a brewin to the west. Sure enough... Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Southern Buffalo County with an incredible cloud to ground lightning display.
We both jumped in the Truck and went out a few blocks west outside of the city lights... We only got only a few shots as the lightning was abnormally severe.. The type that has a huge crack when it strikes. Every bolt that you see had an individual unique sound a few seconds after it has stuck.
Incredible strong positive lightning strikes.

A dramatic scene of a rural farmhouse with a young boy sitting on a fence, gazing at an ominous, approaching storm. The sky is filled with dark, swirling supercell, creating a sense of impending danger and awe. The vast, open countryside and the rustic setting highlight the contrast between the serene moment and the powerful forces of nature about to unfold.
