Currently, my research involves improving the genome assembly for pineapple variety 'MD2', which is the most commonly used variety for the global fresh fruit market. By improving the assembly, I also aim to identify new genes in the bromelain gene family, which can then be used as part of an assay for determining bromelain production potential. The submitted infographic seeks to inform viewers about how sequencing the genome of pineapple can be used in real-world applications that have impacts on human health.

My current favourite tree - the Chestnut tree sacrificed for public safety. Last year it dropped a big branch on a couple of passers by - no major injures though. The first 8-10 feet of it was fine - the rest quite rotten.

Plant fossils in the Pennsylvanian of Ohio, USA.

"Carbonization" refers to fossils that are preserved as dark, flattened, carbon-rich films. This is a common preservation style in plant fossils, but some fossil animal groups are usually carbonized - for example, the graptolites.

The abundant plant fossil fragments shown here are in siliciclastic sedimentary rocks of the Pottsville Group, a Pennsylvanian-aged cyclothemic succession in eastern Ohio that contains nonmarine shales, marine shales, siltstones, sandstones, coals, marine limestones, and chert ("flint"). The lower Pottsville dates to the late Early Pennsylvanian. The upper part dates to the early Middle Pennsylvanian. The Lower-Middle Pennsylvanian boundary is apparently somewhere near the Boggs Member (?).

Notice that many of the elongated plant fragments are oriented more-or-less parallel to each other. This is the result of current alignment, probably in an ancient fluvial environment.

Stratigraphy: nonmarine siliciclastics above the Lower Mercer Shale, Pottsville Group, Atokan Stage, lower Middle Pennsylvanian

Locality: Rock Cut railroad cut - talus piece from a small, spring 2017, mass wasting pile along the southern side of Ohio Central Railroad tracks (west of milepost 134), ~southwest of Copeland Island & south-southeast of the town of Dresden, northern Muskingum County, eastern Ohio, USA (~vicinity of 40° 04’ 24.41” North latitude, ~81° 59’ 11.25” West longitude)

Our everyday life is can often be described as a flow, that is constantly taking us forward. We pass by places, things and people, leaving our memories and experiences behind and we sometimes don’t have an opportunity to stand up, stop and look around or behind ourselves, to see all the way, all the traces, the inanimate witnesses, that silently remember us passing by. In this photo series I sought to slow down, disconnect myself from the motion and look back, look up and down. I moved to the sides and touched the objects, had a closer look at them, inspected the marks, textures and lines, tried to observe them back and seek for the clues for the stories they had witnessed.

In progress- now I have to wait 1-2 weeks for it to dry so I can add another glaze.

Civil Rights activist and musician Joan Baez was on hand at the opening of the exhibition A More Perfect Union: American Artists and the Currents of Our Time on June 28 at the Xippas Gallery in Geneva.

The traveling art exhibition is part of the Art in Embassies Democracy Collection initiative which highlights the profound connection between artistic expression, activism and defense of democracy.

“Artists are the world’s best ambassadors for the cause of freedom, because they survive on freedom,” said Megan Beyer, Director of the Office of Art in Embassies at the U.S. Department of State. “Art can make you feel what a diplomat can only try to make you understand.”

“This exhibit echoes the indomitable spirit of democracy and the unwavering pursuit of human rights through the profound discourse of art,” said Ambassador Michèle Taylor, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC). “As states from across the globe convene for the 53rd HRC session, let these works serve as a resounding testament to our shared dedication towards an equitable, just world.”

A More Perfect Union: American Artists and the Currents of Our Time, curated by Art in Embassies Chief Curator Camille Benton, President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities member Nora Halpern, and former Art in Embassies Director Ellen Susman, includes works by some of the most respected contemporary artists in the United States. Exhibition works focus on issues of equality, freedom, justice, and other founding principles of the United States. Among the artists are Tanya Aguiñiga, Doug Aitken, Paula Crown, Jenny Holzer, Wyatt Gallery, Jeffrey Gibson, Jay Lynn Gomez, Eric Gottesman, Tomashi Jackson, Titus Kaphar, Christine Sun Kim, Bruce Nauman, Yoko Ono, Alexis Rockman, Edward Ruscha, Will Ryman, Emily Shur, Xavier Tavera, Hank Willis Thomas, Marie Watt, Carrie Mae Weems, Susan Weil, Lawrence Weiner, Ambassador Chantale Wong, and Yu-Wen Wu.

From www.answers.com/topic/architecture-in-kansas-city, some history on this building currently known as "The View":

"The View" is also known as the Vista Del Rio Apartments. Located at 600 Admiral Boulevard, it was originally completed in 1967. The architects of this building were John L. Daw & Associates. It was originally built to inspire urban renewal in that area, which for a long time had been very dilapidated. After a period of misuse, the building itself fell into deep disrepair. After much of its glass had been removed, it began to be used by more "troublesome" citizens. By the 1990s, maintenance and care became so bad that graffiti appeared throughout structure and, unfortunately, even human remains were found around the premises.

Many predicted the destruction of this neglected building, but at the beginning of current downtown redevelopment, its future became much brighter. The Vista Del Rio became the View, turning it from a public nuisance to a magnet for people wishing anew to live downtown."

Current 2008 collection - seen in the beautiful Courrèges shop on Rue François 1er, in Paris

n the course of my current project I have been exploring the relationship between oral history and creative writing, specifically, how the oral history interview can serve as a stimulus for pieces of experimental creative writing. My output has included poems, play scenes, and monologues. The project revolves around the memories of four former Paisley thread mill workers. After interviewing these women, and inviting them to share their memories of subjective experiences in the mills, I transcribe the interviews, and then use the transcriptions to inspire new text-based works. I have a strong personal connection with the mills of Paisley, as I have several family members who worked in them. My work aims to honour the memories and voices of a generation who helped put Paisley on the map.
