Biography:
Naomi Onaga is a fine art photographer and art consultant. Her photographs explore the hidden mystery, movement, lyricism, and spirit in the natural world and inner universe; she is currently exploring an open, intuitive process of shooting using small point-and-shoot cameras, with little post processing or digital manipulation. Naomi has also worked as a freelance photojournalist for clients including Knight Ridder and McClatchy Newspapers, and as a human rights activist with organizations in Africa, Asia and the Americas. She studied photography at the City College of San Francisco where she won the Yefim Cherkis Memorial Scholarship, as well as in Mexico and Brazil. She has a BA from Stanford University and two graduate degrees from Columbia University.
CCSF Photography and You:
The CCSF Photography Department has been a crucial companion to me in my life's journey. When I first took Beginning Black and White photography in 2005, I was only seeking a momentary diversion from my highly stressful work as a human rights activist. But something about perceiving with a different sensibility, being quiet in the darkroom, and exchanging with my professor and classmates opened up a new world for me. I took more classes, and when I ended up moving to Brazil a couple of years later, I was surprised that I was able, using the skills I learned at CCSF, to freelance as a photojournalist with major newspapers, and take photographs for human rights organizations in Africa, Asia and the Americas.
When I returned to CCSF in 2010, my photography was evolving into something else, into something more abstracted, intuitive and expressive. CCSF, with its wide range of classes and fabulous professors, was also able to nurture my shift into fine art photography. The series I began in 2010 and completed in 2013 [of which images #1 to 3 are a part] won the Yefim Cherkis Memorial Scholarship prize in Spring 2013 [and will be shown in a solo exhibit at Gallery Obscura Nov 13 to 25, 2013, and will hopefully be expanded further into a book].
I realized recently that the shift in my photographic style was portending a transformation in my entire life, several years before it happened. Now both my photography and I have become more fluid experimentations and explorations of mystery, dimensions of reality, spirit, art, connection and consciousness. They say that photography shows what's inside of you; I wonder if in my case, it also pulled me toward the direction I needed to go. As I grow, my awe and wonder at the power of photography and art also grow.
I hope the CCSF Photo Department continues to be such a wonderful resource and community for learning and transformation. I believe in my activist heart that it is making invaluable contributions to elevating us toward a world imbued with more truth, beauty, awareness, peace and solidarity.

The Current Affairs Committee of the Congress met in Venice, Italy, on 9 March 2017, under the presidency of Gabriele Neff (Germany, ILDG), Chair of the Current Affairs Committee. Mr Simone Venturini, the city’s deputy mayor responsible for social cohesion, employment, spatial development and infrastructure, addressed participants before the opening of the meeting. Participants looked at the role of local and regional authorities in the reception of refugees and the integration of migrants and the situation of Roma and Travellers with a view to approving a resolution on the revised Charter of “European Political Parties for a Non-Racist Society” and a declaration of mayors and elected local and regional representatives of Council of Europe member states against anti-Gypsyism. They also discussed the report “Forever young? The role of youth policies and youth work at local and regional levels in supporting young people’s transition to autonomy and working life” and moves to enable youth delegates to make a greater contribution to the Congress’s work.

City Life/Vida Urbana members and community activists for the third week in a row protested outside of the Boston Housing Court. Protesters assert that taxpayer owned banks, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, have been evicting families ‘no fault’ at alarming rates in Boston and throughout Massachusetts. Four people including longtime housing activist and one-time mayoral candidate Mel King committed civil disobedience in front of the courthouse and were arrested.
The group is pressing for a stop no fault evictions until Mel Watt is confirmed to the FHFA. Ed DeMarco is the current head of FHFA, which oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. DeMarco has resisted community-stability based solutions to the foreclosure crisis, such as principal reduction or long-term rent contracts. Pres. Obama has nominated Congressman Mel Watt to replace DeMarco. These government sponsored enterprises are 79% owned by taxpayers and they are currently among the largest mass evictors within the state, displacing thousands of working-class people and eviscerating communities of color. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac own over half of mortgages in Massachusetts.

Our everyday life is can often be described as a flow, that is constantly taking us forward. We pass by places, things and people, leaving our memories and experiences behind and we sometimes don’t have an opportunity to stand up, stop and look around or behind ourselves, to see all the way, all the traces, the inanimate witnesses, that silently remember us passing by. In this photo series I sought to slow down, disconnect myself from the motion and look back, look up and down. I moved to the sides and touched the objects, had a closer look at them, inspected the marks, textures and lines, tried to observe them back and seek for the clues for the stories they had witnessed.
