Pictures taken on a very wet walk around Caernarfon

The first castle in Caernarfon was a motte-and-bailey castle from the late 11th century which lasted until 1283 when King Edward I of England began replacing it with the current stone structure. The Edwardian town and castle acted as the administrative centre of north Wales and as a result the defences were built on a grand scale. There was a deliberate link with Caernarfon's Roman past and the Roman fort of Segontium is nearby.

While the castle was under construction, town walls were built around Caernarfon. The work cost between £20,000 and £25,000 from the start until the end of work in 1330. Despite Caernarfon Castle's external appearance of being mostly complete, the interior buildings no longer survive and many of the building plans were never finished. The town and castle were sacked in 1294 when Madog ap Llywelyn led a rebellion against the English. Caernarfon was recaptured the following year. During the Glyndŵr Rising of 1400–1415, the castle was besieged. When the Tudor dynasty ascended to the English throne in 1485, tensions between the Welsh and English began to diminish and castles were considered less important. As a result, Caernarfon Castle was allowed to fall into a state of disrepair.

Despite its dilapidated condition, during the English Civil War Caernarfon Castle was held by Royalists, and was besieged three times by Parliamentarian forces. This was the last time the castle was used in war. Caernarfon Castle was neglected until the 19th century when the state funded repairs. In 1911, Caernarfon Castle was used for the investiture of the Prince of Wales, and again in 1969. It is part of the World Heritage Site "Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd"

Anti-Corruption/Political Demonstration

" Bangkok Shutdown " is the current slogan of the anti gov protesters trying to force the current prime minister and gov down. They already resigned and offered elections and are in caretaker status currently. But the protestors prefer Reform before Elections, which the gov. disagrees on. Still ongoing and no solution so far found at the moment.

As with this Australian native dog - the dingo - I currently have only time to ponder as I've broken my ankle and cannot put foot to ground for at least 6 weeks. It's a great way to start long service leave (NOT) I also currently have no access to a computer, only my IPAD intermittently so I will be not able to make comments until I'm able to accessmy computer. I know all my Flickr friends will empathize and understand. This is a reposted pic of a previously private photo as I dont have access to my data, so I hope it works.

Chester Osborn is fourth generation vigneron and current chief winemaker and viticulturist of d’Arenberg in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Named as one of Robert Parker’s ‘Top 40 World Wine Personalities’ in 2005, Chester’s striking sense of individuality is evident in each glass and in the marketing of every bottle of d’Arenberg wine. Since taking the winemaking reins from his father in 1983, Chester has overseen the expansion of the d’Arenberg portfolio to over 50 wines and a growth in exports to over 70 countries.

These Mini-Donuts are quite popular since Canadians rarely get to eat donuts that aren't pre-packaged, frozen and thawed like those sold at a popular chain of coffee shops.

St Mary-le-Bow is an historic church in the City of London[1], off Cheapside. The current building was built to the designs of Christopher Wren, 1671-1673, steeple completed 1680, after the Great Fire of London burnt the previous church on the site down. The mason-contractor was Thomas Cartwright[2], one of the leading London mason-contractors and carvers of his generation. The last church had been there since before the Normans arrived, and under that name. Its steeple had been a landmark before the Fire, and Wren fittingly provided it with a unique replacement. The Bow bells were once used to signal a curfew in the City of London. Before modern traffic noise, they could be heard as far away as Hackney Marshes.

According to tradition, a true Cockney must be born within earshot of the sound of the church's bells. The bells are also credited with having persuaded Dick Whittington to turn back from Highgate and remain in London to become Lord Mayor (three times in the story but four times in reality).[3] The church is also immortalised in the nursery rhyme Oranges and Lemons. Traditionally distances by road from London have been measured from the London Stone, or the "Standard" in Cornhill, but on the road from London to Lewes the mileage is taken from the church door of St Mary-le-Bow. To emphasise the difference, mileposts along the way are marked with a cast-iron depiction of a bow and four bells.

A medieval version of the church had been destroyed in 1091 by one of the earliest recorded (and one of the most violent) tornadoes in Britain, the London Tornado of 1091.[4]

A Recording of the Bow Bells made in 1926 has been used by the BBC World Service as an interval signal for the English Language broadcasts since the early 1940s. It is still used today preceding some English broadcasts. Much of the current building was destroyed by a German bomb on 10 May 1941 and the bells crashed to the ground. Restoration under the direction of Laurence King[5] was begun in 1956 (with internal fittings made by Faith-Craft, part of the Society of the Faith), and the bells only rang again in 1961 to produce a new generation of Cockneys.

St Mary-le-Bow has no parishioners and no Sunday services: its role today is to minister to the financial industry and livery companies of the City of London.[6]

This is the warning sign about the tides and dangers of the tides, stuck onto a nearby telephone kiosk by Margate Beach - just be careful!

We are currently producing Life For Mile, a feature film planned for a theatrical release about the Chinese and Indians (First Nations) involvement in the construction of the transcontinental railway that united Canada as a nation in the 1880s. It was said that for every mile of railroad that was built, one Chinese life has been sacrificed, thus the title of the movie. The Chinese workers’ contribution has been noted many times, but little has been said of the native Indian’s involvement. So while we were in Kamloops BC talking to the local Shuswap Nation, we were also invited to visit the Secwepemc Native Heritage Museum and Park. The indoor museum contains many aboriginal artifacts which dated back to thousands of years and the outdoor native heritage park features ways of how the local tribes have lived with their culture and way of life being well-preserved. For example, canoe making, Double Lodge for summer fishing and trading and ‘Pit House’ for winter living etc. [Photo by Ray Van Eng www.vancouver21.com ]

National Palace, San Salvador, El Salvador.

The current National Palace building replaced the old National Palace built in 1866–1870, which was destroyed by fire on December 19, 1889. The construction, done between 1905 and 1911, was the work of engineer José Emilio Alcaine, under the direction of the foreman Pascasio González Erazo. To finish the project, legislation was passed that collected one colon for every quintal of coffee exported. The materials used were imported from several European countries including Germany, Italy and Belgium. The Palace's facilities were occupied by government offices until 1974. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1974.

Title: Campusbibliotheek Arenberg

Other title: Campus Library Arenberg; Celestine Priory

Creator: Moneo, Jose Rafael; Keldermans, Rombout, d. 1531

Creator role: Architect

Date: 1521-1526 (Monastery built) 2002 (Restoration complete)

Current location: Heverlee, Vlaams-Brabant, Flanders, Belgium

Description of work: In January of 1997 the Katholieke Universiteit (Catholic University) located in Leuven (Flemish)/Louvain (French) held a competition for the renovation of the vacant Celestine priory, in nearby Heverlee, and its conversion into a library for four departments: Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences, Sciences, Engineering and Bio-engineering. Since its closure in 1783 the monastery had been utilized in a variety of ways. In the 19th and early 20th centuries the building was a stable for the nearby Castle Arenberg and from 1925 to 1984 it was a test station for plant breeding. Spanish architect Rafael Moneo embraced Rombout Keldermans II's original monastery architecture by incorporating new construction that enhanced (and found new use for) the old (Langouche, Guido ed. The Celestine Priory at Leuven: From Monastery to Library. Leuven: Leuven University Press, 2005). The addition connects opposite sides of the former monastery's courtyard which creates new outdoor spaces. The concave exterior walls on the top floor are mirrored by convex walls on the addition's opposite side (which faces the cloister garth) and by interior convex detailing that houses some of the entry hall's lighting.

Description of view: An original monastery brick wall is part of the interior space surrounded by concrete columns, stone floor and convex ceiling forms

Fred Sherrer makes some of the best wines in Northern California. His winery, a family run operation, is all function and no form. All of his efforts go into the wine, not into faux Tuscan ambiance or marketing gimmicks like multi-tiered wine clubs, celebrity endorsements or tour bus-appeal. As a result, he's kind of like the best kept secret of the local wine business. You can buy his wines at a few select sources or by visiting the winery itself either by appointment or by going to one of the few open house events he has each year. Just knowing about his winery gives going there an ultra exclusive, yet vaguely counter culture-like appeal. There are no billboards, no signs and when you drive up to the back what looks like a warehouse hidden in the country with stacks of pallets and a beaten up old work truck, you feel a little thrill of anxiety like you're about to buy something a little bit contraband and maybe, just maybe, shouldn't go through with it. But when you get out of the car, all the other patrons smile at you because just being there means you know the good stuff when you taste it, you're willing to go out of your way to get it and you're already in the club. It's exclusive, inclusive and unpretentious at the same time. How to explain that?? You step inside and in the dim lighting, there are people sampling the most delicious wines and noshing on the best gourmet bites I've ever had. Beautiful watercolor art hangs on one wall, there are barrels for gathering and planning out your orders and Fred's family and staff are low key and friendly. One has to remember not to give treats to either of the two dogs or to trip over the odd chew toy one of them has left on the floor. If you're very observant, you can see the rock band setup that shares Fred's office space.

Fred himself is tall and gracious with an intense passion for his wine and a barely visible air of whimsy that he keeps mostly in check. He doesn't talk down to his customers, assuming you know as much about wine as he does... or at least, that you appreciate all the different aspects of what wine can be, as much as he does. "There are," he said to me the first time I met him, "cheaper and easier ways to get a buzz on." His wine is more than his craft, it's his art. Some of it is the kind of subtle, sensual experience you want to share with only one other person, others are bold and fun; not meant to be taken too seriously but enjoyed in good company with good food.

I'll shut up now. Go check him out:
