We had a blind cupping of home roasted coffees at Cassel's Little Cafe in Plymouth, Michigan a few years back. Everyone had a blast, and I look forward to having a convenient venue to hold stuff like this in the future.

After nearly a year, I went back to my massage therapist. Boy, did I need it! I was so stiff that she recommended cupping. You know, the glass cups where the oxygen is sucked up by a match and the cup is placed on your skin. I think the vacuum is supposed to suck up the toxins and whatnot. I lost count at 20 cups. I clinked every time I breathed deeply. LOL
It loosened my shoulders quite well and she was able to get to it. She lovingly called these 3-inch bruises 'Beauts'. I feel like a pepperoni pizza. :-D
at Ritual Roasters. I happened upon it by accident and got to participate in tasting six different coffees. Recommended.
in a La Marzocco cup. Not the best shot of espresso ever - the grinder was dialed for another user's technique, and the coffee was uber fresh, it ended up plopping fatly out of the PF, and the shot ran about 19 seconds out of the the Linea. In the end though, it had fairly good body and a good sweetness.
Cupping: "Cupping is one of the oldest methods of traditional Chinese medicine. Drawing up the skin is believed to open up the skin’s pores, which helps to stimulate the flow of blood, balances and realigns the flow of qi, breaks up obstructions, and creates an avenue for toxins to be drawn out of the body. As the skin under a cup is drawn up, the blood vessels at the surface of the skin expand. This may result in small, circular bruises on the areas where the cups were applied. These bruises are usually painless, however, and disappear within a few days of treatment."

Acas is a small group of organic producers within a larger cooperative of predominately conventional producers. Over the last 4 years they have committed themselves to learning all there is to know about sound coffee production.
After a community meeting we gathered in the middle of the cooperative to mill, roast and grind coffee on that all in one machine you see pictured here. Needless to say it was a bit haphazard. However, the goal of starting to connect the dots of what happens on the farm to what is found in the cup was definitely achieved. And, the act of cupping opened up the space for conversation around picking, processing, and drying in a really concrete way. For a brand new group to start these conversations now it's quite impressive.
For a really great discussion on cupping with farmers in mind, read more on the CRS coffeelands blog here: coffeelands.crs.org/2014/01/381-introducing-the-farm-faci...
