The Healing Touch

Traditional Chinese Cupping refers to an ancient Chinese practice of moxibustion therapy in which a cup is applied to the skin on your back and the pressure in the cup is reduced by using the heat from a flame that creates suction so that the skin and superficial muscle layer is drawn and held into the cup.

In this traditional medicinal practice, the skin is pinched at specific acupuncture key points until a redness is generated. This treatment has some relation to certain massage techniques along the back that is an important aspect of tuina.

EARLY HISTORY

The earliest use of cupping that is recorded is from the famous Taoist alchemist and herbalist, Ge Hong (281–341 A.D.).

Cupping is an ancient Chinese method of causing local congestion. A partial vacuum is created in cups placed on the skin either by means of heat or suction. This draws up the underlying tissues. When the cup is left in place on the skin for a few minutes, blood stasis is formed and localized healing takes place.

Mitch and I went coffee cupping at the Emeryville Royal Coffee offices where we get our green beans. They have an incredible location, out on the water's edge in Emeryville in a beautiful little building by the Marina with lots of windows.

A cupping session (tasting) at the Cupping Room.

Cupping: "Cupping is one of the oldest methods of traditional Chinese medicine. Drawing up the skin is believed to open up the skin’s pores, which helps to stimulate the flow of blood, balances and realigns the flow of qi, breaks up obstructions, and creates an avenue for toxins to be drawn out of the body. As the skin under a cup is drawn up, the blood vessels at the surface of the skin expand. This may result in small, circular bruises on the areas where the cups were applied. These bruises are usually painless, however, and disappear within a few days of treatment."

Something an acupuncturist does? My friend's back (in town).

As noted in the previous photo (linked below) the Ethiopian Tchembe won the day. It was a brilliant, bright, fruity cup.

Fire is put into cups and cups are put on your back. It looks much worse than it is. It's painless and helps with colds.
