this cube in parque de la exposicion in lima reminded me of the movie sphere. apart from the very obvious geometric differences, i'm pretty sure that there was a big, reflective, golden sphere in that film. although a quick google search didn't provide any evidence to back that up so i could be remembering wrong again. i do recall being disappointed with that movie though, not because it was really bad, but because it had potential to be good. i enjoyed the scenes when the sphere/alien starts communicating via the computer screens, typing out his name is jerry and he is happy, before sinisterly changing tack and declaring he will kill everyone. it should have been a tense, claustrophobic sci-fi thriller/horror - but somehow the pieces just didn't fit together. it's certainly no event horizon which i'm not embarrassed to admit scared the bejesus out of me.
in reality i'm sorry to reveal that this cube wasn't hovering above the ground, here's the non-floaty original
This cube was designed by David Mitchell and it was published on his book Paper Crystals, for the first cube I folded I used regular printer paper. Then I decided to fold a smaller one... It only takes like 5 min to fold and assemble the whole thing.
The cube fades in and out, it has a couple of mercury switches in it, one to switch it on, the other to change the colour.

pete reassembles my rubick's cube - it exploded after the first experimental turn. the second attempt was more successful.
Cubes are especially useful if you have a larger piece you want to slightly elevate or, or lack of better words, put on a pedestal.

The laser cut fences turned out well. They all fit together to make the cubes. I spraypainted them to help the lights.
"Cube houses (Dutch: Kubuswoningen) are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam and Helmond in the Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom and based on the concept of "living as an urban roof": high density housing with sufficient space on the ground level. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest.
The houses in Rotterdam were designed in 1977 in a plan of 55, of which 39 were built.
The houses in Rotterdam are located on Overblaak Street, right above the Blaak Subway Station. There are 38 small cubes and two so called 'super-cubes', all attached to each other.
As residents are disturbed so often by curious passers-by, one owner decided to open a "show cube", which is furnished as a normal house, and is making a living out of offering tours to visitors.
The walls and windows are angled at 54.7 degrees. The total area of the apartment is around 100 square meters, but around a quarter of the space is unusable because of the walls that are under the angled ceilings.
In 2006, a museum of chess pieces was opened under the houses.
In 2009, the larger cubes were converted by Personal Architecture into a hostel run by Dutch hostel chain Stayokay."

I ride my bike by these concrete cubes in a field and think Cubes! But alas they lost in the 114 to an office building! It was so hot and I was out there shooting these dumb things from every single angle. Just no.
