The Cube Guys in concerto all'Alcatraz di Milano foto di Andrea Ripamonti per www.rockon.it

Created with Rubik's Cube action (free) from PanosFX.com

A basic "skeleton" for new design variations based on my Magic Folding "Fidget" Cube.

Each of these "skeletons" has a lot of free space for new folding cube designs. The 1x1 round plates (black and yellow in the "skeleton" model) can also be replaced by any parts that can fill a 1x2x2/3 gap.

And there will be even more possible variations if you apply the "orange" changes only on one side of the cube/cuboid creating a non symmetrical "skeleton".

After all you have a lot of possibilities to build some cool stuff around it.

Cube Houses in Rotterdam Blaak.

Kubuswoningen, or cube houses, are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam and Helmond in The Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom and based on the concept of "living as an urban roof": high density housing with sufficient space on the ground level. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest.

Paper: 7.5 cm, joints from 3.75 cm

Modules: 6 face modules from 2 sheets, 12 joints

Model: Tomoko Fuse

Book: Studio Origami Kusudama p. 79

I never liked those joints which vanish almost: paper waste, isn't it? But the effect here made me overcome this prejudice: The green lines among the black are cool :-)

Used glue.

Cube Wrap in Photoshop CS5 is a new feature which is not frequently used, but it saves a great deal of time. A cube has six sides. If you wish to add Text to all six sides it will take a lot of time. Photoshop CS5 has magic. You add Text on a single side and Photoshop automatically puts it on all the other sides. You can use this for a special effect. The tutorial is here : photoshopper27.blogspot.com/2012/01/cube-wrap-in-photosho...

I built this transforming cube months ago, after I've seen the first pics of the black cubes from the Lego Movie. I didn't manage in this first trial to attach all the plates on the robot, one is the base. It works good but my first idea was an eight-faces transforming cube. Next time!!

Paper: 7 cm

Modules: 6

Assembly: grey one is glued

Model: Tomoko Fuse

Book: Unit Origami Essence p. 58-59 and p.60

Fuses Book contains three variants with different width of the strip. I haven't folded the one with the smallest strip yet.

The grey cube may be made by two different modules, I used the ones on p. 60. Since the modules fell apart at the beginning, I used glue for some modules. As often with cubes, it's stable in the end, so probably only a matter of patience (and perhaps cloth pins or thelike) to arrive at a glueless model.

Cube made from my new unit, Woven Slit Module (WSM).

This model uses 24 units made from 2:1 paper. Connection method is such that a hole is created in the middle of each face. Slits and unit connections are on the inside of the cube, in contrast to this model. This gives the model its woven appearance.

For a similar effect achieved with only a single unit for each face, see my Square Weave Cube.

The Cube Houses, or "Kubuswoningen" in Dutch, are one of Rotterdam's most iconic and unique architectural marvels. Designed by Dutch architect Piet Blom in the late 1970s, these innovative houses were conceived as part of an urban development project aimed at creating a "village within a city." Each house is literally a cube tilted at a 45-degree angle, resting on a hexagonal pylon, which gives the illusion that they are balancing on one corner. This striking and unconventional design immediately captures attention and has become a symbol of Rotterdam's progressive and bold approach to urban planning.

Blom's vision was to represent a forest, with each individual cube symbolizing an abstract tree, and the entire complex forming a cohesive "urban forest." The structures are built on a pedestrian bridge above a busy street near the Blaak metro station and the historic Oude Haven, cleverly optimizing public space. The complex consists of 38 small cubes and two larger "super-cubes," all interconnected to form a visually stunning and playful residential area. Their bright yellow color further enhances their distinctive presence against the city's skyline.

Stepping inside a Cube House offers a truly unique living experience. Due to the 45-degree tilt, all the walls and windows are slanted, creating unconventional and dynamic interior spaces. While this might seem challenging, the design cleverly maximizes the usable area within the geometric constraints. Typically, a Cube House has three floors: the ground floor serves as the entrance and storage area within the hexagonal pylon, the first floor houses the living room and an open kitchen, and the second floor contains two bedrooms and a bathroom. The top floor, often a small loft, can be used as a study, guest room, or even a rooftop garden, offering panoramic views of the surroundings.

While most Cube Houses are private residences, one "Show Cube" (Kijk-Kubus) has been opened to the public as a museum, allowing visitors to experience firsthand what it's like to live in such a distinctive home. This offers a fascinating insight into the creative solutions employed for furniture placement and maximizing space in an angled environment. Additionally, one of the larger cubes has been converted into a Stayokay Hostel, providing the unique opportunity for visitors to actually spend a night in these architectural wonders, further cementing their status as a must-see attraction in Rotterdam.

The Cube has 6 different colourful mosaics on its sides and combines a lot of the things that I love: Lego (obviously), geometric shapes, colours, mosaics and patterns and finally some logic and maths.

It was a very fun and satisfying build and it makes me so happy just looking at it.

A co-worker had this speed cube. Whenever I see an unsolved one, I have this incredible urge to solve it.
