I got a copy of Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended the other day and I have been playing about to see what I can do, I was inspired by BristolRE2007's photo: www.flickr.com/photos/britishbuses/5099432977/. So I decided to graft the front of a Stagecoach ALX400 onto a First London Plaxton President and here is the result....

Westminster Cathedral is the mother church of the Roman Catholic faithful of the Archdiocese of Westminster and the metropolitan church of the Westminster Province, located at 42 Francis Street SW1 in the City of Westminster in London. It is the largest Roman Catholic church in England and Wales. Not to be confused with Westminster Abbey of the Church of England, Westminster Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Westminster Cormac Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor, shepherd of the Archdiocese of Westminster. As a matter of custom each newly appointed Archbishop of Westminster has been created a cardinal in consistory.

History

In the late 19th century, the Catholic Church hierarchy had only recently been restored in the United Kingdom, and it was in memory of Cardinal Wiseman (who died in 1865, and was the first Archbishop of Westminster from 1850) that the first substantial sum of money was raised for the new cathedral. The land was acquired in 1884 by Wiseman's successor, Cardinal Manning. After two false starts in 1867 (under architect Henry Clutton) and 1892 (architect Baron von Herstel), construction started in 1895 under Manning's successor, the third archbishop Cardinal Vaughan with Bentley as architect. The cathedral opened in 1903, a little after Bentley's death. For reasons of economy the decoration of the interior had hardly been started and still much remained to be completed.

Under the laws of the Church no place of worship could be consecrated unless free from debt and having its fabric completed, so the consecration ceremony did not take place until June 28, 1910.

On May 28, 1982, the first day of his six-day visit to the United Kingdom, Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass in the cathedral.

In 1995, at the invitation of Cardinal Basil Hume, the cathedral was visited by the Queen, the first visit of a reigning monarch of the United Kingdom to a Catholic liturgy for several hundred years.

Architecture and Mosaics

The Byzantine church architecture by John Francis Bentley makes Westminster Cathedral a highly distinctive building.

The dominating external features are the great campanile, St. Edward's Tower, 273ft high (top of cross, 284ft), and the West Front with its finely balanced pillars and arches.

The nave is the widest of any church in England and, because the Sanctuary is 4.5ft above the level of the nave, every part commands an uninterrupted view of the High Altar, with its imposing marble and mosaic baldacchino, on which light is cleverly concentrated. The richly gilt Crucifix hanging from the chancel arch is 30ft in length. On one side is the figure of Christ; on the reverse, towards the altar, the figure of the Sorrowful Mother. The Archiepiscopal Throne or cathedra, of marble and mosaic, is modelled on the Papal Throne at the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome.

The beautiful marble pillars are elaborately carved, with caps of white Carrara marble, no two alike. There are in all eleven side-chapels. Adjoining the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament is a white marble monument of Cardinal Vaughan (d. 1903). The screen and gates in this chapel, surmounted by a gold pelican, are very beautiful. In a corresponding position on the other side of the Sanctuary is the Lady Chapel. The Chapel of St. Gregory and Augustine (the first on the right as one enters the nave) and the Chapel of the Holy Souls (the first on the left as one enters) are also complete; the former was the gift of Lord and Lady Brampton.

The cathedral continues to receive donations for the completion of the elaborate mosaics within. As of 2006, work is being undertaken to decorate the Chapel of St. Joseph.

Below the Choir is the Crypt, or St. Peter's Chapel, also with fine columns. Here are monuments covering the remains of Cardinals Wiseman and Manning, transferred from their original place of interment and Kensal Green.

The view from the Tower is much obstructed by nearby buildings and scenery. The tower is about 60ft higher than the western towers of Westminster Abbey, but is 30ft lower than the Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament. Archbishop's House adjoins the eastern end of the Cathedral, in Ambrosden Avenue.

Thought i'd go down to my local motorway bridge and try and get some slow shutter speed shots with my Fuji bridge before i get my DSLR in hopefully less than two weeks time, this type of shot was quite awkward as my camera only does up to four seconds on this mode. This is not one of my best shots from tonight but i think its really unique how the tailights of the trailer have been captured completely still.

EBB TIDE AT MOONSTONE BEACH.

Moonstone Beach is a part of Cambria.

Cambria (also known as "Cambria, Pines By the Sea") is a seaside village located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles on the California State Route 1 (Highway 1). The name Cambria was settled upon in 1869 (previously the town had gone by the names of Slabtown, Rosaville, San Simeon and Santa Rosa).

History

Local tribes

Earliest human settlement of this area is associated with prehistoric habitation by the Native American Chumash peoples, who exploited marine resources along the coastal area, with emphasis upon sites that were streamside in nature.

Although our recorded history of the tribes in this region does not begin until explorers and missionaries arrived, there is evidence that there were many tribal settlements in the area that was to become Cambria. It is estimated that as many as 30,000 thrived in the area in the 1000 years before the Spanish arrived. Some experts believe these tribes were migratory and used Cambria as a seasonal settlement, while others are convinced that they lived there permanently. Most agree that they feasted on shellfish and seafood on the coast, as well as traveling inland to hunt and gather seeds. A variety of artistically-crafted implements have been discovered, including obsidian spears and arrowheads; basalt, sandstone, and granite mortars and pestles; soapstone kettles; and stone hammers. They were skilled basket and net makers and fashioned jewelry from crab claws, abalone shells, and the teeth of sharks and whales. The presence of soapstone (steatite) provides evidence that they traded with the Catalina Island tribes, while the lack of metals and glass indicated they did not trade with Europeans or Asiatics.

Evidence exists to allow experts to conclude that Cambria tribes were gentle, generous, and peaceful, and that they lived simply. Their family bonds were strong, and they exhibited great love and patience toward their children. They were also noted for their extreme cleanliness in handling and preparing food and possessed an advanced knowledge of medicinal herbs. For entertainment, they enjoyed music and had a passion for gambling.

Early settlers and quicksilver

Cambria is located on the Rancho Santa Rosa Mexican land grant given in 1841 Julian Estrada.

Settlers were drawn to the area by its fertile lands, streams, and lumber. Additionally, miners were attracted to the area by the 1862 discovery of cinnabar, the mineral in which quicksilver is found. For awhile, Cambria was a boomtown, with $280,000 worth of quicksilver shipped out of San Simeon between 1867-70.

For awhile, Cambria was a mining boom town, and prospectors flooded the area. Over 150 claims were filed in the early 1870s. The most successful of these claims, the Oceanic Quicksilver Mining Company, soon employed 300 and was the largest mine in the area and the sixth largest in the world. Three modern furnaces were built, seven tunnels completed, and stock jumped to $30 a share. Hopes were high, and Cambria residents dreamed of wealth. Unfortunately, by 1878, mercury prices had fallen, and Cambria's first boom ended. As mercury prices fluctuated, Cambria's mining thrived, and dwindled. During its boom in 1876, $282,832 in quicksilver was produced; four years later, production totaled only $6,760. A devastating fire in 1889 virtually ended this boom/bust cycle, and Cambria settled into a quiet dairying community.

Originally an American settlement called Slab Town, it was centered at Leffingwell cove of today's north Moonstone Beach, which also housed a wharf. As lumber, ranching and Quicksilver (mercury) mining increased in the area, the village adopted the more dignified name of Cambria, influence by a local transplant surveyor from Cambria County, Pennsylvania.

Marine Protected Areas

Cambria State Marine Conservation Area and White Rock (Cambria) State Marine Conservation Area are marine protected areas offshore from Cambria. Like underwater parks, these marine protected areas help conserve ocean wildlife and marine ecosystems.

The guinea pig or domestic guinea pig (Cavia porcellus), also known as the cavy or domestic cavy is a species of rodent belonging to the genus Cavia in the family Caviidae. Despite their common name, guinea pigs are not native to Guinea, nor are they closely related biologically to pigs, and the origin of the name is still unclear. They originated in the Andes of South America.

In Western society, the guinea pig has enjoyed widespread popularity as a pet since its introduction to Europe and North America by European traders in the 16th century. Their docile nature, friendly responsiveness to handling and feeding, and the relative ease of caring for them have made guinea pigs a continuing popular choice of household pet.

Livestock breeds of the guinea pig play an important role in folk culture for many indigenous Andean peoples, especially as a food source. The animals are also used in folk medicine and in community religious ceremonies. They are raised for their meat and are a culinary staple in the Andes Mountains, where they are known as cuy.

Twenty minute fix.

Created in Illustrator CS5

Hello everyone. I hate to sound like a broken record, but once again Im sorry for my absence on flickr. My faithfull laptop of about six years took a downhill turn and all but stoped working. I finally got tired of dealing with the blue screens and frozen screens and all the other problems it had and placed an order for a new laptop with photo editing software. Now that I have a new laptop with software I plan to increase my uploads to flickr.

I processed this image in CS5, although I have alot to learn before I can really use this software I really like this much better than the free software that came with my camera which is what Ive been using for quite some time now. Im not real sure what I done to get this image...lol I know I did a little work in the HDR part and a little work here and some more work there and this was the end result. I have a few more images that I worked on yesterday after I got CS5 installed that I will upload throughout the week. Its ok if you dont like this or any of the other images I upload, I really want to know what you like or dont like because Im trying to learn how to use this software. At first I thought I may have bit off more than I can chew with this software, but after a couple of hours I got a little more comfortable with it and should get a little better over time as I learn.

I hope everyone enjoys, thanks for looking and I hope everyone has a great 4th of july.

For some reason - my last image disappeared. If it comes back I'll delete this one. Weird.

We've spent the day playing with CS5. :)

For the SFDA group - basically two shots - one a background plate the other the figure with two remote flash heads on a tripod to the right, firing at face height. The end shot is blended simply down the middle to hide the tripod. (it's on the path - with the flash hidden under the star.)

Then in PS there are several layers, mist on the ground, MANY layers of flashes, glows and masked colour corrections. If I do another one of these I'll be sure to make a better note of what was done. :)

ABOUT THIS IMAGE

White Picket Fence

The typical American White Picket Fence. Almost everyone wants one. Something different in my Flickr Portfolio. I am selective and do not have every image I make in my Flicker Portfolio. On one of my walks in which I always take my point & shoot, I noticed this picket fence. The light was just right and I made this image. It is the case of always seeing. Looking for that certain “thing.” Always keeping your photographic eyes open. An exercise I always do, yet sometimes drives me crazy because it is difficult to turn off at times.
