Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England, UK.

The Stack is a pop up leisure complex, built on land where Watson House and The Odeon Cinema used to stand. It makes no concession to its surroundings, but is a brazen attempt to grasp some income for the owners and developers.

The portion of Newcastle between the junction of Pilgrim Street and New Bridge Street West down to Swan House Roundabout was snapped up by the Reuben Brothers, possibly the richest people in Britain, for their Aldersgate Investment company. There is outline planning permission for the whole area to be redeveloped into a massive retail and leisure area.

The Developer, Danieli Holdings, have thrown up this maze of shipping containers to provide retail at ground level with bars and restaurants above. This has not been without its critics. There are those who say that this lumpen mess is an eyesore, with yet others who object to the sale of alcohol on such a wide and open scale.

Official complaints have been to no avail. Both the City Council and the Licensing Committee are keen for this to go ahead.

Another trip to Madrid to visit some customers… The weather forecast announced rains so I left the dSLR at home and took my son’s point-and-shot just in case. I have no possibilities of adjusting exposures and, as I had to shot in JPG, decided to bracket slightly the shots (0EV,+0,3EV,-0,3EV) to take a pano. The initial image was too blueish, so I played in CS5 with contrast, saturations, applied a warm colour filter and the final result seemed quite good to me… This building is one of the landmarks in Guadalajara. In 1480, Iñigo López de Mendoza commissioned the architect Juan Guas to build in the place where once their family houses stood, a palace which reflected the importance of his family. Built initially in Isabelline Gothic style it also incorporated Renaissance elements. Unfortunately the wooden ceilings, a Mudejar masterwork, were destroyed, but there are still some interesting elements, as the façade, the courtyard and the frescos in some vaults. Currently, the buildings hosts the Provincial Museum and the Historic Archive of Guadalajara.

Was heading home and then driving back into town to Pier 4 for dinner. Too bad the photos from Pier 4 did not turn out that great.

This 7 image HDR shot was taken at Beamish open air museum in the North East of England. On 16th April the museum opened it's doors in the evening especially for photographers. This gave the opportunity to take photos in lower light conditions.

Masson Mills, Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, England, UK.

Arkwright's Masson Mills In 1783, at the birth of the Industrial Revolution, before mass migration to the cities, factories were built at sites of natural resources. The steep Derwent valley makes the river forceful, so Richard Arkwright diverted part of the flow for his waterwheel powered textile mill.

The Spinning Jenny, invented by James Hargreaves in 1764, reduced the effort required to make thread for cloth. A single worker could produce up to eight spools at once by treadle power alone.

Richard Arkwright (1732 - 1792) took the technology further by using mechanics and water power in his Water Frame system, producing 120 bobbins at once. Raw cotton and flax could now be made into yarn on an industrial scale.

Arkwiright's factories at Cromford, Wirksworth, and Matlock Bath in Derbyshire, and Chorley, Lancashire were the pattern for years to come. He included weaving looms, some with intricate designs for patterned cloth, to produce textiles on an unprecedented scale.

Masson Mills was Arkwright's most ambitious factory, built at the pinnacle of his career. It now houses the most comprehensive private collection of historic textile machinery in the world.

Water Frame & Doubling Machine Arkwright patented the water powered spinning frame so as to maintain a near monopoly on industrial yarn production. He was later stripped of the patent when objectors proved that it was not so much an invention as an improvement.

Nevertheless, Arkwright's mills produced cotton yarn for weavers throughout the land, rather than just for his own modest looms.

The principle of doubling is to take strands of spun yarn then combine them further into stronger thread. This was usually employed as warp, the finer yarn being used for the weft. Arkwright's machines did both operations, a system that is still in use today in textile manufacture.

The waterwheel shaft, running the length of the building, is here under the floor. A clever arrangement of pulleys and belts brought power to the machines.

Hello everyone. I hate to sound like a broken record, but once again Im sorry for my absence on flickr. My faithfull laptop of about six years took a downhill turn and all but stoped working. I finally got tired of dealing with the blue screens and frozen screens and all the other problems it had and placed an order for a new laptop with photo editing software. Now that I have a new laptop with software I plan to increase my uploads to flickr.

I processed this image in CS5, although I have alot to learn before I can really use this software I really like this much better than the free software that came with my camera which is what Ive been using for quite some time now. Im not real sure what I done to get this image...lol I know I did a little work in the HDR part and a little work here and some more work there and this was the end result. I have a few more images that I worked on yesterday after I got CS5 installed that I will upload throughout the week. Its ok if you dont like this or any of the other images I upload, I really want to know what you like or dont like because Im trying to learn how to use this software. At first I thought I may have bit off more than I can chew with this software, but after a couple of hours I got a little more comfortable with it and should get a little better over time as I learn.

I hope everyone enjoys, thanks for looking and I hope everyone has a great 4th of july.

CS5 is so much fun!

Made in CS5 with 5 different photographs that I took.

For some reason - my last image disappeared. If it comes back I'll delete this one. Weird.

We've spent the day playing with CS5. :)

For the SFDA group - basically two shots - one a background plate the other the figure with two remote flash heads on a tripod to the right, firing at face height. The end shot is blended simply down the middle to hide the tripod. (it's on the path - with the flash hidden under the star.)

Then in PS there are several layers, mist on the ground, MANY layers of flashes, glows and masked colour corrections. If I do another one of these I'll be sure to make a better note of what was done. :)

Deeply calmly・・・

CS5 is amazing. I love it. For many reasons. Could just be that im loving having a version of photoshop on my computer again but I could spend ages on there :D

I actually did, I was editing a picture, for a while. Then it stopped responding and I lost it all. Glad I saved this before it crashed. I would like to say I go into ps without any idea of what I will do to a picture. Sometimes I come out with a result I like, sometimes I dont. But each one is handcooked :) I enjoy the variety and seeing how each one needs to be manually adjusted to fit my mood or purpose at the time. Anyways yeah....photoshop is fun lol

'Tis be me laughing. Today was much better then last night. You know sometimes a hug can solve everything :D

If you want, doesnt look too different

Comments most welcome

just something I was playing around with today while doing homework, Im a bit of a procrastinator lol. It could be cleaner but I wasn't making it for anything just fun so some of the edges and small details I wasn't that worried about

A panorama of the new Southwharf precinct taken during our first Twilight Photography Get-Together in 2010.

Subject:

The picture shows the beautifuly designed AUD750mn Southwharf complex development which will hopefully soon will attract restaurants and nightlife to the newly completed promenade connecting South Bank Promenade with the Docklands (Lorimer Street end).

The complex consists of the new 5-Start Hilton Hotel, numerous fashion, electronic, and furniture stores. It's crown jewel, though, is the gigantic Melbourne Convention Centre (illuminated in yellow).

You can also see the magnificently designed Seafarers Bridge in the foreground casting a neon-blue light onto the Yarra River producing a stunning reflection.

Photographic Technique:

The picture is stichted from 6 individual shots (double row) forming a panorama taken about 38 minutes after sunset. Each picture has an exposure of 30s at f/7.1 and ISO 100. I had my UV and CPL filters mounted on my lens. I used DxO Optics 6 for the RAW file conversion, lens distortion optimisation as well as for contrast and detail enhancement. As usual Autopano Pro 2 did the stitching for me. I post-edited the panorama (minor color enhancements mainly) in Bridge and framed in Photoshop CS5.

Print:

The end-result is a stitched 60.0 Megapixel 343MByte large photograph which is printable 4.05m x 1.84m at 72 DPI (excl. black frame).

Not a large mountain, but a very jagged one in Wateron Lake National Park.

Given the non astro friendly weather which has been most of 2012, a sensible person would pick something bright and an object not requiring multiple hours of hit and miss imaging to work on.

Not being in the least bit sensible I've chosen VdB 152 a devilishly faint reflection nebula located not far from IC 1369 (The Elephants Trunk) in the constellation of Cepheus.

This is the result of almost 6 hours of luminance frames and the body of the nebula is only just starting to appear from the background. This is right at the limit of my sky quality, and maybe needs the same exposure time again to really bring out the dust from the noise.

As a member of NAPP, I was invited to apply to be an Adobe Photoshop CS5 PreRelease beta tester. Here are a few photos that have been retouched with Photoshop CS5.

Loki the Jötunn, father of Hel, quarreled with the other gods. He accused the Aesir of impropriety and in the end had to flee from their wrath, and when the Aesir came after him, he jumped into the river Franangrsfors and disguised himsef as a salmon. Eventually Loki was caught and submitted to unspeakable punishment.

The Lokasenna is one of the poems of the Poetic Edda.

Dare take a closer look? (I do recommend it — the darks do not close so much in the larger version)
