One of the great critiques of the painting of Washington crossing the Delaware was that he was standing. Common wisdom says, "of COURSE he wasn't standing! The boat would have tipped!" This goes to show you that "common wisdom" can sometimes be stupid. Durham boats were cargo vessels, there were no seats. Also, it was miserable weather and the boats were filling with water throughout the night. EVERYONE was standing.

The Great Crossings Bridge, dedicated in 1818, once carried the National Road across the Youghiogheny River in southern Pennsylvania. Since 1944, when the Youghiogheny Dam was completed, the bridge has been under the waters of the Youghiogheny River Lake except for times of low water levels.
