With the 1209 left on the main along Cermak, the CIRY crew head up the Kramer spur, which requires crossing Cermak on a curve with no automated warning devices. One of the CIRY crew (everyone is qualified as an engineer AND conductor) protects the crossing with weather-beaten red flag. As the locomotive passes, he'll hop aboard on the fly and guide the engineer down the infrequently-used spur.
We often don't realize who we cross paths with. It's rare we take a moment to look up and see a world of opportunities and connections to be made.

It's great when one walks under here, motion sensors sense movement & a great P.A. system blasts, "F*** off or the police will be called!" Not in those words, but the sentiment is the same.
One of the great critiques of the painting of Washington crossing the Delaware was that he was standing. Common wisdom says, "of COURSE he wasn't standing! The boat would have tipped!" This goes to show you that "common wisdom" can sometimes be stupid. Durham boats were cargo vessels, there were no seats. Also, it was miserable weather and the boats were filling with water throughout the night. EVERYONE was standing.

This temporary pelican crossing has just sprung up on Maendy Way where it crosses the Monmouthshire-Brecon Canal. The canal towpath is very busy with walkers and cyclists, and bus passengers, often waiting unduly for a suitable break in the traffic both ways to cross the road. Over the last couple of years I have lobbied the council on two occasions to either put a pedestrian crossing here, or insert a refuge island in the middle of the road. Hopefully this temporary crossing is a prelude to the installation of a permanent one, which will make the road much safer to negotiate here.
Technically the road signs are not Welsh Language Act compliant, doubtless dueto the fact that the contractor, according to the rear of the sign, is from Bristol.
