Ramsbottom station crossing

Crosfields Crossing box viewed from the pipe bridge above the crossing.

A LNW type 4 box built early in the last century it has survived in excess of one hundred years but has now signalled it’s last train.

Here the signaller was busying himself tidying the box.

The roof of Bank Quay station can be spotted in the distance but the foreground is dominated by the Crosfields plant after which the box is named, now owned by Lever Brothers I’m lead to believe the ageing and sprawling industrial site produces soap powder but I stand to be corrected.

Times are a changing at Warrington.

Over a distance of just 68 chains (0.85 of a mile) from Arpley Junction to Monks Sidings four signal boxes controlled trains on the Low Level line from Arpley Junction to Ditton East Junction.

Four absolute block boxes, Arpley Junction, Crosfields Crossing, Littons Mill and Monks Siding provided a taste of railways of old. Leaving Arpley Junction the line passes under the WCML and Warrington Bank Quay station before emerging surrounded by industry in the midst of Lever Brothers massive soap powder works. Crosfields Crossing is just 726 yards from Arpley but then only a further 220 yards, an eighth of a mile no less, is Littons Mill, another crossing box, a further 550 yards beyond that is Monks Crossing, again a crossing box and once access to a former British Steel works site.

This short section of track is to be re-signalled and this is actually happening this week. The new signalling will utilise track circuit block between Arpley Junction and Littons Mill using axle counters.

This is a series of photos aimed at recording the signalling of this section of track which has now passed into history.

Lostwithiel Crossing signal box at the the north end of Lostwithiel railway station by Grenville Road level crossing. Thursday 11th May 1989

Lostwithiel signal box was a Great Western Railway Company type 5 design fitted with a 35 lever frame that opened in 1893 replacing an earlier signal box. The signal box was renamed Lostwithiel Crossing in 1895 and a replacement 63 lever Great Western Railway Company Vertical Tappet 3-bar frame was commissioned on 16th December 1923. The 3-bar tappet locking was replaced by 5-bar tappet locking in 1943 and a British Railways Western Region key control instrument was commissioned on 24th June 1956 controlling 100 signal (down intermediate block signal). A Westinghouse Signals Limited M4 entrance-exit signalling panel controlling the Largin area was commissioned on 16th December 1991 allowing the closure of Largin signal box on 14th December 1991. Lostwithiel Crossing signal box was awarded Grade II listed building status on 30th July 2013 and a replacement Henry Williams entrance-exit signalling panel was commissioned on 22nd April 2018, the original signalling panel being presented by Network Rail to the Bodmin & Wenford Railway on 12th October 2018

I was passing between the neo-Classical pillars of the Royal Scottish Academy on one of my Lockdown daily walks, and paused for a few moments, camera peering between the pillars to look at the pedestrian crossing where Hanover Street meets Princes Street, and shot a few snaps of people coming and going across it.

Toy Sunday: Cute Couple...of Penguins!

I visited one of my fav shops in the UAE, 'Daiso' of Japan and bought this cute little wooden game for AED19, just over £3. The packet describes it as a 'Taw game' A 'taw' is fancy marble used as a shooter. The islands are placed 30cm apart, facing each other. Three chips are placed around each island. Each player flicks the footing chips twice toward the direction they want to go and the penguins then cross.First across to the opponents island is the winner.
