This is the view crossing from Los Angeles to Ventura counties by small plane. There's nothing that really marks the county line except that I've hiked in this area and know that it runs through on the right side of this image. The highway that cuts through the image from left to right is the 118 freeway and the community visible is the town of Santa Susana in the Simi Valley.

The Quebec Gatineau train for Thurso heads west through Lachute. It has a pair of geeps (QGRY 2009 and 2502) and 14 cars. Thanks to Ken Goslett for driving and choosing the spots, as this is my first time shooting this scenic line.

On the level crossing over the former B1105 to the north of Fakenham, BR built this super little crossing keeper's hut. The hut contained a small ground frame that controlled the gates and distant signals in both directions. There is a square aperture below the small window next to the door where the wires and channel rod exited.

The ex North Staffordshire Railway crossing 'box at Sudbury, which is situated on the double track line between Stoke on Trent and not surprisingly North Stafford Junction at Willington.

The box was constructed in 1885 and doesn't appear to have changed much in 126 years.

Box sign

Harlescott Crossing box is situated on the edge of Shrewsbury and in theory worked to Crewe Bank but this had effectively been switched out for the previous five years when this photo was taken thus it normally worked to Crewe Junction. In the opposite direction it worked to Wem. The box again is clearly of London North Western origin containing a 38 lever stirrup handle frame. It dates from 1882 but looks as if it has been extended at some stage in it's life.

Seen on Thursday 4th October 2012 in it's 130th year.

Over the weekend of Friday 11th October 2013 to Monday 14th October 2013 the boxes at Nantwich Station, Wrenbury, Prees, Wem, Harlescott Crossing and Crewe Bank between Crewe Gresty Lane and Shrewsbury Crewe Junction were abolished. Whitchurch box had been demolished some time previously although the signals were still extant but bagged over. Crewe Bank had not been rostered since August 2007.

The last train to be signalled under AB working was 6V71 the Carlisle – Margam limestone, the signaller at Crewe Junction knocked out at 23.13 with the possession granted at 23.58. Harlescott Crossing sent 7 5 5 at midnight for the final time and absolute block working formally came to an end at 00.20 on Saturday 12th October 2013 after something in the region of 130+ years.

The Crewe – Shrewsbury line was chosen as one of two test lines for the installation of “modular signalling” which as I understand it aims to significantly reduce the cost of re signalling. Cheap single head fibreglass post signals devoid of ladders allied to obstacle detection level crossings all controlled and monitored from a new IECC (integrated electronic control centre) or ROC (Route operating centre) seem to form the backbone of the system. The system clearly was not straight forward as the implementation of the scheme has been postponed several times and indeed when I took these photo’s in October 2012 the closure was expected two weeks later, in reality it was deferred by a further year.

Times are a changing at Warrington.

Over a distance of just 68 chains (0.85 of a mile) from Arpley Junction to Monks Sidings four signal boxes controlled trains on the Low Level line from Arpley Junction to Ditton East Junction.

Four absolute block boxes, Arpley Junction, Crosfields Crossing, Littons Mill and Monks Siding provided a taste of railways of old. Leaving Arpley Junction the line passes under the WCML and Warrington Bank Quay station before emerging surrounded by industry in the midst of Lever Brothers massive soap powder works. Crosfields Crossing is just 726 yards from Arpley but then only a further 220 yards, an eighth of a mile no less, is Littons Mill, another crossing box, a further 550 yards beyond that is Monks Crossing, again a crossing box and once access to a former British Steel works site.

This short section of track is to be re-signalled and this is actually happening this week. The new signalling will utilise track circuit block between Arpley Junction and Littons Mill using axle counters.

This is a series of photos aimed at recording the signalling of this section of track which has now passed into history.

CIMMYT field workers working on wheat crossing as part of the breeding process. During crossing, the wheat plants must be prevented from self-fertilizing. The male flower parts are removed from selected heads, which are then bagged. Once the female parts have developed, the bagged heads are pollinated with heads from another wheat line, and only seed from these heads is subsequently collected.

This photo was part of a slideshow accompanying the story "The Journey of a Seed" in CIMMYT's August 2008 e-news, available online here:

www.cimmyt.org/english/wps/news/2008/aug/journeyseed.htm

However, the slideshow incorrectly implied that the photo showed seed multiplication; in fact, heads are rarely bagged during multiplication, as self-fertilization is desired.
