Humankind's most distant outpost was recently captured crossing the face of our enormous and gleaming Sun. The fleeting transit of the International Space Station was over in the blink of an eye, but Ian Griffin, Director at the Otago Museum of New Zealand, made sure he was in the right place to capture it.

“A transit was predicted about 130 km from my home in Dunedin on New Zealand's South Island. So, I packed my telescope into my car and drove for approximately 2 hours”, explains Ian.

“On Thursday 31 January, at 11:07 NZDT, the International Space Station crossed the Sun in less time than a human heart beats once, and I was there to witness it".

The Space Station, slightly larger in size than a football field, orbits Earth every 92 minutes. It is one of the most remarkable endeavours our species has ever embarked upon, yet it pales in comparison to the size and power of our star.

This remarkable spectacle serves as a much needed reminder that the people and technology we send into space can be affected by solar activity, and the changing environment .

One of the largest geomagnetic storms on record, the Carrington event of 1859, was caused as a fast coronal mass ejection associated with an enormous solar flare struck Earth’s magnetosphere. The impact created auroras as far north as Queensland, Australia, and as far south as the Caribbean.

Telegraph systems across Europe and North America failed, with reports of some operators receiving electric shocks and telegraph pylons sending out sparks.

Today, a storm of this magnitude would create far greater disruption, as we become ever-more dependent on infrastructure in space and on Earth that is vulnerable to the outbursts of the Sun.

As part of ESA’s Space Safety & Security activities, the Space Weather Office is working to minimise the potential damage and disruption these events can cause. The future Lagrange mission will keep a constant eye on the Sun, sending timely warnings via the Space Weather Service Network to operators and controllers of vital infrastructure, giving them time to take protective measures.

This early warning system will also be of great importance to astronauts and future explorers to the Moon and Mars, who, vulnerable to the radiation emitted during these extreme events will need time to get to safety.

From 3-5 March, ESA and the Norwegian Space Agency are coming together for the #AuroraHunters SocialSpace, live from Tromso, Norway. Together with a group of 30 attendees, selected from hundreds of applicants across the globe, we will be highlighting the affects of the Sun on our infrastructure, technologies and skies – in the form of the awesome Aurora. Keep an eye on @esaoperations and follow the hastag #AuroraHunters on twitter to keep up with the event.

The Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge is an arch bridge in the United States that spans the Colorado River between the states of Arizona and Nevada. The bridge is located within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area approximately 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, and carries Interstate 11 and U.S. Route 93 over the Colorado River. Opened in 2010.

At 890 feet (270 m) above the Colorado River, it is the second highest bridge in the United States after the Royal Gorge Bridge near Cañon City, Colorado.

Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression.

While out for a hike last evening I happened upon 3 young does crossing the North Thames river here in London. It was close to dusk and the setting sun provided some great light to capture the scene of this doe making her way across.

Thanks for viewing!!

Its been a fantastic chase of MRL's E/B DG Turn from Thompson Falls. Our last shots are West of Missoula as it approaches the Tucker Lane grade crossing on a sweeping curve.

This shot is a signature location along this little used route but nearly impossible on a sunny day. I've only shot it once nicely on a cloudy fall visit but this year the light didn't work. But I realized that I liked the texture of the sky, the glint of the fluted stainless steel, and the high contrast shadows and after rendering this scene in monochrome it has really grown on me. I know images like this aren't for everybody, but what do you think?

The Plymouth and Lincoln Railroad operates two distinct regular tourist railroads all summer and fall. On the far north end they run 7 miles between Lincoln and Woodstock as the Hobo Railroad and between Meredith, Weirs Beach, and Laconia they operate another 8 miles as the Winnepesauke Scenic Railroad.

Weekends in late September and all of October are an ideal time to visit, not only for the foliage but also because the little used trackage north from Meredith hosts weekend trips. The 26 mile gap between the two regular operations sees nothing but the occasional equipment move normally which is sad, because it is a very scenic and historic route.

This line winds through beautiful New Hampshire woodlands, along lakes, past historic homes, and still features dozens of railroad relics from the era when this was an important through route for the Boston & Maine.

The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad fall foliage special is on its way north to Plymouth from Meredith with a sold out four car train. PLRR 1012 (ex Burlington Northern SW1000 blt. in 1970 and acquired in 2014) leads the train through long thru truss bridge over the Pemigewasset River at Bridgewater near MP 47.7 on the state owned ex Boston and Maine White Mountain Division Mainline.

The Silver Jubilee Bridge crossing the River Mersey at the Runcorn Gap.

My dad once told me that I was one of the first members of the public to cross the bridge, on top of his shoulders, at the opening ceremony back in the sixties. Yep, I lived about half a mile away from this and I was 4 at the time so I don't have any real recollection of the event but it's funny how structures like this can become a significant and symbolic part of your life.

Thanks for visiting and I hope that you enjoy the work.
