The first bridge of its kind in the U.S., Tilikum Crossing, Bridge of the People, carries MAX Orange Line trains, buses, streetcars, cyclists and pedestrians over the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon. No cars, though! Seen from the OMSI center during the first night of the Festival of Lights. I was using a point and shoot, so I'm not displeased with the results. (I had it set on shutter priority, as I cannot for the life of me figure out how to access the ISO and f-stop settings on manual with this camera).

Canada, you stunning country! Anyone who's never seen these lakes and rivers in person would cry Photoshop, because how could water be that color in real life? But that's opaque glacial blue for you, the example here being Saskatchewan Crossing along the Icefields Parkway, made all the more vivid with the help of a CPL.

Of course, crying Photoshop is not altogether untrue. Everything I post goes through Photoshop, I'm not afraid to admit that. It's a digital darkroom and my way to get the Raw file back to how it looked and felt IN real life. Unfortunately these days Photoshop seems like a dirty word to those not in the know, synonymous with fakery, and even touching a photo with a program besides bad Instagram filters means it's a tsk-tsk free-for-all. Then again, in the film days, didn't people used to pride themselves on showing the original negative's edges on the final print to say "Look how good my original shot was, I didn't even have to enlarge it one bit"? Photography superiority goes way, way back :)

For Monochrome Monday here's a selective color offering highlighting the classic scheme of the independent Providence and Worcester Railroad. The railroad's WOGR crew is headed south with a trio of light engines toward the Providence area to pick up an 80 car empty unit ethanol train...the final one of 2024.

PW 4005, 4002 and 4004 are crossing the Blackstone River near MP 17.9 on the historic original Providence and Worcester mainline just north of the Rhode Island state line. This is the 10th of 14 crossings of the Blackstone along the 43 mile line when traveling south from Worcester to Providence.

As for these units PW 4005 is a GE B40-8W originally blt. Feb. 1992 as Santa Fe 561 respectively and was acquired in 2010 along with sisters 4006 and 4007 the latter of which has since been repainted in Genesee and Wyoming orange. Trailing 4002 and 4004 are standard cab B40-8s blt. Jun. 1988 as NYSW 4008 and 4002 respectively.

This shot is taken from the parallel footbridge that once was the New Haven's Midland Division Mainline. It had scheduled through passenger service as late as 1955 (in fact my father as a young child boarded a train at the station directly behind where I'm standing) for a ride on this very route to Putman, Willimantic, Hartford, and on to Waterbury). Commuter trains from Boston continued to serve Blackstone until 1966 and after they came to an end the NH continued to use the route for high wide freight loads that had clearance issues on the shoreline. However in March 1968 another bridge over this same river east of the station was washed out and never repaired and the remaining bit of freight traffic ceased. The route was abandoned by the Penn Central in 1969 just after they merged the New Haven. In recent years it has been restored as a gorgeously paved bike trail.

P&W is my hometown road and it is inextricably linked to the river it follows both historically and physically. The Blackstone River courses 48 miles from its headwaters near Worcester (at the confluence of the Middle River and Mill Brook) to where it flows into the Seekonk River at the headwaters of Narragansett Bay. The river drains a watershed of 640 square miles and more importantly drops 450 feet in the 48 miles. It is that drop, that made this river a pivotal point in American History.

From ririvers.org: A series of steep drops along the length of the Blackstone River provided ideal conditions for the development of water powered industry. Samuel Slater arrived in America in 1790, with managerial experience and technical knowledge of textile manufacturing in England. With the assistance of local merchants and artisans, he helped establish the first successful water-powered textile mill in America. Slater Mill was established on the Blackstone River, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. This achievement is credited with spawning the birth of America's industrial revolution. Development of the Slater textile mill catalyzed the development of water-driven technology throughout the length of the Blackstone River. By 1914 water-powered mills occupied all of the readily available dam sites in the Valley.

As the birthplace of industrial America, the need for transportation quickly arose in the valley, and between 1825 and 1828 the Blackstone Canal was constructed. The canal lasted only 20 years having been rendered obsolete by the opening of the Providence and Worcester Railroad in 1847. The railroad has proven to be a more durable method of transportation and 175 years after its opening here it is still serving the purpose for which it was built.

偶然だが、おととしの今日、私は新型コロナウィルスのワクチンを接種した。

みなさんのなかには、すでに二度目の接種を受けた方もいるだろう。

この新型コロナウィルスは世界に1つの境界線を引いた。

それまでとそれ以降だ。

私たちを取り巻く環境は激変した。

ウィルスに対応するためあらゆる場所に除菌液が設置され、部屋の空気を浄化し、そんな環境が至る所に展開されてきた。

アップルも、これらを認識しつつ、新しいプロジェクトに臨んできた。

新しい価値観を受け入れるためには、新しいスタイルが必要だ。

私たちの周囲もアップデートされなければ、私たちは生き残れないだろう。

アップルは時代を生き残るために、いくつかを提示してきた。

パーソナルコンピューターであるマッキントッシュ。

音楽デバイスであるアイポッド。

携帯電話であるアイフォーン。

そして、今日、アップルはみなさんに伝えたいことがある。

それはもうひとつのサヴァイヴだ。

アップルカー。

アップルは車を再発明する。

これまでの自動車の状態

今までのガソリン車を振り返ってみよう。

ガソリンという化石燃料を使い、ガスを排出する。そして環境を悪化させてきた。

山林は業火に見舞われ、大雨の大洪水に街はさらわれ、乾いた大地が覆い尽くす。

これからもこの状態が続くという事は地球自体の崩壊を招く。

私たちはそれを止めなければならない。少なくとも見直しに取り掛かることが重要だ。

世界的にトップだったトヨタはこれに積極的に取り掛からなかった。

すでに多くの世界で走っているハイブリッドのプリウス。

これは１９９２年に発表されたにも関わらず、新しい車種でさえも未だにハイブリッドのままだ。

発売してからの約３０年もの間、いったい彼らは何を目的としてこの車に固執し、開発してきたのか？

なぜ彼らはこの車種を見直さなかったのか？

現状のハイブリット、プラグインハイブリット。そういった類は結局は化石燃料を使っている。

彼らはこの新しい展開に積極的に臨んできたというが、現状維持という考えを変えなかった。

むしろ現時点においても、それがベストだとさえ言ってるように思えてならない。

私たちはそこで他の会社も見渡してみた。

電気自動車の現在

テスラだ。

皆さんご存知のようにテスラは積極的に環境問題に取り組み、世界規模で大きく発展し貢献してきた。化石燃料を使わない、そして自動運転、洗練されたデザイン。これらは多くの人たちを魅了してきた。

しかし広く普及はしたものの、皆さんの家のそばにこの車は走ってるだろうか？

答えはノーだ。

なぜ車が走っていないか。

私たちは3時間ほどしっかり考えた。

まぁ、たった3時間だが。

答えは単純だ。

車が高いからだ。高価すぎるのだ。

これはテスラに限らず電気自動車を作っているすべての会社に言えることだ。

とにかく車の値段が高すぎる。

私たちはこれを念頭に置きつつ、車を再発明した。

アップルカーのポイント

アップルカーのポイントは三つだ。

ひとつめ。

価格。

電気自動車が普及しない理由は非常に簡単だ。

価格が高いからだ

なぜ電気自動車が高いのか。それは本体価格の大半を占めるバッテリーの値段が最も高いからだ。

それが大きく占めている。

そこでアップルはリン酸鉄リチウムイオンバッテリーと言う素材を使うことに行き着いた。

これは全個体電池のように高価ではなく安価で、iPhoneのように充電する時間は短く、すぐに使えることを優先させ、かつ、耐久性に優れていると言うポイントがある。

私たちはこの2点を重視した。

車を短時間で充電し、短距離を即、走行可能となることを目指した。

iPhoneやアップルウォッチと同じ結論を反映させたのだ。

現在、電気自動車は長距離を走ることを目標としているが、果たして、きょう、あなたが会社から帰る際に、長距離用のバッテリが必要だろうか？

何百キロも走ることが必要だろうか？

すぐに家に帰り、すぐに充電し、また朝には出勤する。

全個体電池などという長距離が走れる高価なバッテリは、現段階では不要なのだ。

アップルはそう判断した。

次にアップルが目指したポイントの2つ目は安全性だ。

WHOの報告では、年間で世界中の事故死者数は１３５万人に上る。

これは、２４秒にひとりが命を落としている計算になる。

アップルはこの事故を劇的に減らそうと考えた。

Apple Watchを腕に巻いた子供が車の下にいた場合。

iPhone 5Gを持っている人が側道にいたり、信号待ちをしている場合。

彼らを事前に感知し、彼らには接近しないように考えた。

人の居場所を事前に察知することができれば、車は避けられる。

私たちは、車自体が人から離れることを計算した。

3つ目は先進性だ。

これまでの車と言うのは、車に乗るとわかるが、ダッシュボードにはいつもの通風口が口を開けて待っている。

これは見慣れた光景で、もううんざりだ。飽き飽きだ。

私たちはこの風景を大きく前進させる。

フロントガラスにAR機能を搭載し、ナビゲーションで誘う。

また、ダッシュボードには皆さんが持っているiPhoneやiPadを貼り付け、聴いていた音楽をそのまま車内で流せる。

もちろん、望めばそのままエンジンもスタートだ。

ワイパーなんてもう不要だ。水滴なんて風圧で飛ばすした方が美しい。

シートベルトもあなたが座れば自動で閉まる。きつ過ぎず、ゆる過ぎず、あなたは快適な空間を提供されるだろう。

また、ハンドルを握って前を見据えた瞬間にドライバーの健康状態をアップルカーは察知する。

あなたが酔っていたら、車は決して動かない。もう酔っ払い運転の事故は発生しないだろう。

以上の三つがアップルカーのポイントだ。

１　価格

２　安全性

３　先進性

アップルはこれらを重視した。

そして、皆さんが最も気になるのは価格のはずだ。

価格は29,999ドル。

車の予約は来週から。半年後にまずはアメリカから発売する。

それでは実際にアップルカーをお見せしよう。

備考。

ここで重要なのは自動運転に触れていないこと。

多分アップルは自動運転には触れず、車をまず普及させることをアピールしてくるはず。

After five punishing miles of climbing the Caldon Low branch reaches a summit at Ipstones before commencing a 1 in 61 descent to Winkhill. This summit is at around 1050ft above sea level, which is significantly higher than Shap summit at 914ft. The climb is also much steeper that Shap, being 5 miles at mainly 1 in 45 and 1 in 59 compared with 5 miles at 1 in 75. Here 37 075 has just crossed the summit towards Caldon Low in this view looking through three accommodation bridges up the 1 in 61 from the bridleway crossing west of Blackbrook.

Some of the bright lamps caused a blowout in this exposure, accompanied by a pattern of concentric rings that I suppose must be a diffraction pattern. It looks kind of weird, but I'm especially intrigued by the way the outer rings seem to fagment and scatter.

Was pretty rare to see so many vehicles waiting to cross as this is normally a pretty quiet crossing to vehicles.

This crossing is operated by Network Rail by a Crossing Keeper who sits in a porter cabin which is on the other side of the crossing.

Pedestrians

The passage of pedestrians over the crossing is controlled by miniature Red / Green lights which you can see next to the gate on the picture and in general the crossing keeper has no involvement. The wicket gates are not locked during the passage of trains.

Vehicles

The crossing keeper controls the passage of vehicles over the crossing. To use the crossing the driver of the vehicle presses the red bell button on the gatepost to alert the crossing keeper.

i'm back from Oregon from a 5 days camping trip with family and friends. a group of 4 adults and 6 kids, Yes sir! and we did it! Crater lake this time. it was Amazing. out of this earth. lots of shots to process.

The shot above was taken in San Francisco about two weeks ago. Ashbury haight was in the fog and i was all excited being there. that street is phenomenal but ... quite dirty. while waiting for friends in the store, i stayed on the same spot for 30 minutes, observing silhouettes crossing the street. light was not that great, and the 85 was a good pick this time.

i'm sooo late at visiting streams. time to catch up!

I always enjoy shooting the bridge at Belhaven, it's definately one of my 'go to' spots when conditions are good.

I've a few different images of the bridge in the works, so will upload a couple more over the next few months as I finish them off.

My sharp-eyed husband spotted this Muntjac crossing the railway at Broom Heath in Woodbridge this morning!

The Muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi) is the smallest deer in Britain, standing at about 45cm at the shoulder. They have a hunched posture due to their haunches being higher than their withers. But you may hear a Muntjac before seeing it as they have a loud and quite distinctive ‘barking’ call.

The Muntjac has copper-brown fur, with darker markings on the legs and face – which vary depending on gender. Muntjac can be seen at any time of the year. Unlike other deer species in Britain the Muntjac does not have a set rutting season and they will breed all through the year. They are active throughout 24 hours, but dawn and dusk are the best times to see them especially in an area subject to human disturbance.

Muntjac inhabit both deciduous and coniferous woodland with shrubby areas where they can feed on berries, acorns and grasses. They can sometimes be found visiting gardens with good cover. In fact one jumped into our garden over a six foot fence on Friday morning!

Muntjac are not a native species to Britain. They originate from China but were introduced to Woburn Park in Bedfordshire in 1838. After escapes and deliberate movement of the deer by humans they have now spread over southern England and are increasing in number.

Muntjac are a conservation concern in the UK as they impact on woodland ground flora.
