I think I need to work out...

Sometimes, you don't have to really plan out your shots, just be vigilant, and sometimes the most meager of objects can inspire you to photograph.

Fui a São Paulo, pela primeira vez com uma DSLR, em 2011, garoava, fazia frio, estava preso no trânsito. De dentro do carro, com os vidros fechados comecei a fotografar.

File: M04-01

Two versions of an album art that I created, ten years apart.

What is this about?

This was a graphic design project I did back in 2012 (left side) and recently in 2022 (right side).

In 2012, the project was to create an album art, print it, cut it out, and fit it in a blank CD jewel case. The purpose of this was to take it with me when attending an interview, for example a job interview, and showcase my skills and experience. It goes with my portfolio displaying examples of my graphic design works.

When my teenager kids were attending secondary school, I did manage to apply for an adult course in graphic design at a college, in the hope of refreshing my skills, and getting better qualifications to replace my outdated ones. When attending an interview, I showed this CD album art to the interviewer, whom was impressed.

The woman seen in the album art is not a model, she is a very close personal long-time friend of mine, herself a single mother, and she posed for me as a favour.

The train, seen in the background, was an old steam train at one of those heritage railway stations in the United Kingdom. The photographs of my friend posing at the railway station was taken with a Nikon D200 around February 2012.

About the artist and album title.

Lisa Jones is the name of a fictional character. When doing graphic design projects, like designing a CD album case cover, music video cover, tour poster, t-shirt, or magazine article layout, of a solo female artist, I use this fictional character in my designs.

The fictional Lisa Jones could be described as singer-songwriter, guitar player, her genres are rock, alternative rock, and that she could be kind of similar to Sharleen Spiteri or Sheryl Crow.

The album title The Mystery Lady At The Station, is a made up title. As I mentioned above, the woman in the photo is a close friend whom did a favour for me, not a booked model. She doesn’t mind if I created a graphic design work using the photo of her, as long as she is not clearly seen. So when I thought to do a cropped version, I realised the image makes her look like a mystery woman, and decided to give it a title based on this.

The track titles are actually sort of like a diary or journal, done in a bullet point style, and serves as reminder for me, to remember events I did in my life.

The top row shows the front page of the inlay card, which is the main album art cover for the front of the jewel case. The bottom row shows the back of the jewel cases.

On the left side.

This was done in 2012 using CorelDRAW 10 on my older computer running on Windows 98.

During 1987 to 89, I attended a college course, studying traditional graphic design, which means using pencils, pens, paints, craft knife and masking tapes, because at that time, the college did not have enough computers for all students.

Years later, in 1995, I got myself a Windows 3.1 computer, mainly for using word processor, but realised that at that time, more and more companies are switching from old fashion traditional graphic design to digital way done on computers. I figured it would make sense if I buy myself a graphic design software and install it on my computer, then self-teach myself in digital art.

So, I bought CorelDRAW 3, few years later I upgraded my computer to a new model with Windows 98. After that, I upgraded from Version 3 to 4, and then to 10.

Here is how I did it: I imported two photographs of my friend into Corel Photo-Paint, and used its range of filters to try to turn the photos into some kind of art-like images, like a watercolour painting or similar, then saved them as JPEG format images.

After that, I imported the JPEG images into CorelDRAW’s vector software, and created the inlay card and back cover. The tickets on the front cover, and the fictional company logo on the back cover, were modified from pre-prepared Clipart images that came on the CD-ROM.

Then simply print them out, cut them out, and install them into a jewel case.

On the right side.

This was done in 2022, this time using Adobe Creative Cloud software, on my current computer running on Windows 7 Professional Edition.

In the summer of 2015, I custom built my new computer with Windows 7 Professional Edition, in 64-bit mode. Sadly that mean some of the older software including CorelDRAW could not be installed on my new machine, as they were programmed for 32-bit and were incomparable.

So I switched to Adobe software. I’m aware that many photographers use Adobe Lightroom only, while many prefer Adobe Photoshop only, and some prefer both of them. However as I not only just do photography, but also do graphic design, I opt for the “All Apps” package, which includes InDesign and Illustrator, as well as Lightroom and Photoshop.

Because I was unable to install my old CorelDRAW 10 software on my Windows 7 machine, I hoped to open the original .CDR format files in Illustrator, and try to convert into .AI format file. Unfortunately there were some problems with the designs, like missing fonts, photos showing outside the lines, stuff like that. It would request some major changes to make them workable.

So I decided to start afresh.

Here’s how I did it: First, I imported the photos into Photoshop, and saved them as .PSD format files, instead of exporting them as .JPEG files. I used Photoshop’s filters to change the looks, and saved them.

For the inlay card to be installed in the front cover of the jewel case, I used Adobe InDesign. Because the inlay card is often created as a booklet, InDesign is better suited for this. I imported the .PSD file into InDesign, and if it does not look right, I would make changes to the .PSD file in Photoshop then save them. The InDesign file can be automatically updated with the changes.

For the back cover, I used Adobe Illustrator instead, and like as above, I imported the .PSD file into Illustrator, then create the rest of the details such as track titles, copyright notices, fictional company logo, etc. As with InDesign, if the .PSD image does not look right, I can make changes in Photoshop, save it, and Illustrator will automatically update with the new look.

Conclusion.

So that is why I have two versions of same album art. One was created in 2012 using CorelDRAW on older 32-bit operating system, and the other was redone in 2022 with Adobe software, on 64-bit Windows.

A late upload of this city/street photo of Nagoya from last October 2018 (thus the 2018 watermark) when I had my short vacation to finally visit the country of my dreams and to watch the Formula 1 race, a sport I have been a fan of since 1996, thus combining my 2 loves: Japan and its culture, and Formula 1.

A quick break from uploading photos from Japan and Formula 1.

There was clear skies this evening and a waxing gibbous of a moon, so I thought why not try out my Sigma APO Teleconverter 2x EX DG along with my Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 APO EX DC OS HSM to take a photo and see how useful this 2x teleconverter is.

Me thinks the Sigma APO 2x Teleconverter EX DG coupled with my Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 APO EX DC OS HSM mounted on a Nikon D7200 is a good combination indeed.

Images get soft as expected of a telephoto+teleconverter, but hey, good enough for a hobbyist lol

Manhattan's Chinatown (simplified Chinese: 曼哈顿华埠; traditional Chinese: 曼哈頓華埠; is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City, bordering the Lower East Side to its east, Little Italy to its north, Civic Center to its south, and Tribeca to its west. With an estimated population of 90,000 to 100,000 people, Chinatown is home to the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere. Manhattan's Chinatown is also one of the oldest Chinese ethnic enclaves. The Manhattan Chinatown is one of nine Chinatown neighborhoods in New York City, as well as one of twelve in the New York metropolitan area, which contains the largest ethnic Chinese population outside of Asia, comprising an estimated 893,697 uniracial individuals as of 2017.

Historically, Chinatown was primarily populated by Cantonese speakers. However, in the 1980s and 1990s, large numbers of Fuzhounese-speaking immigrants also arrived and formed a sub-neighborhood annexed to the eastern portion of Chinatown east of The Bowery, which has become known as Little Fuzhou (小福州) subdivided away from the primarily Cantonese populated original long time established Chinatown of Manhattan from the proximity of The Bowery going west, known as Little Hong Kong/Guangdong (小粵港). As many Fuzhounese and Cantonese speakers now speak Mandarin—the official language in China and Taiwan—in addition to their native languages, this has made it more important for Chinatown residents to learn and speak Mandarin.[8] Although now overtaken in size by the rapidly growing Flushing Chinatown (法拉盛華埠), located in the New York City borough of Queens, the Manhattan Chinatown remains a dominant cultural force for the Chinese diaspora, as home to the Museum of Chinese in America and as the headquarters of numerous publications based both in the U.S. and China that are geared to overseas Chinese.

Chinatown is part of Manhattan Community District 3 and it is primary ZIP Codes are 10013 and 10002. It is patrolled by the 5th Precinct of the New York City Police Department.

The Manhattan Chinatown is one of nine Chinatown neighborhoods in New York City, as well as one of twelve in the New York metropolitan area, which contains the largest ethnic Chinese population outside of Asia, enumerating an estimated 779,269 individuals as of 2013; the remaining Chinatowns are located in the boroughs of Queens (up to four, depending upon definition) and Brooklyn (three) and in Nassau County, all on Long Island in New York State; as well as in Edison and Parsippany-Troy Hills in New Jersey. In addition, Manhattan's Little Fuzhou (小福州, 紐約華埠), an enclave populated primarily by more recent Chinese immigrants from the Fujian Province of China, is technically considered a part of Manhattan's Chinatown, albeit now developing a separate identity of its own.

A new and rapidly growing Chinese community is now forming in East Harlem (東哈萊姆), Uptown Manhattan, nearly tripling in population between the years 2000 and 2010, according to U.S. Census figures. This neighborhood has been described as the precursor to a new satellite Chinatown within Manhattan itself, which upon acknowledged formation would represent the second Chinese neighborhood in Manhattan, the tenth large Chinese settlement in New York City, and the twelfth within the overall New York City metropolitan region.

As the city proper with the largest ethnic Chinese population outside of Asia by a wide margin, estimated at 628,763 as of 2017, and as the primary destination for new Chinese immigrants, New York City is subdivided into official municipal boroughs, which themselves are home to significant Chinese populations, with Brooklyn and Queens, adjacently located on Long Island, leading the fastest growth. After the City of New York itself, the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn encompass the largest Chinese populations, respectively, of all municipalities in the United States.

Possibly one of my favourite photoshopped work, the idea of this is someone lost, he trying to find the right path but down the line he fading away.

If anyone would like to know how I did this, leave a comment and i will try my best to help and hopefully you can do some cool things with this effect.

Thank you and hope you like the photo. :)

San Francisco California

On the left is the TransAmerican Pyramid, built in 1969, with 48 floors. On the right is the Sentinel Building AKA Columbus Tower, built in 1907. Construction started before the 1906 earthquake, and much of what was completed withstood the quake. I can't tell you how much was done at the time.

The Sentinel Building has a lot of interesting stories, some true and some rumors.

A political criminal Abe Ruef, had an office on the top floor after getting out of San Quentin prison. The Kingston Trio owned the building at one time in the 1960s and was their headquarters. Barbara Streisand played at the club in the basement

before she was famous, and the Caesar salad was invented here. Some are true, and some are not, I'll let you decide.

Film director Francis Ford Coppola bought the building in the 1980s, although I don't see any evidence that he still owns it. The Der family trust is listed. Currently the building houses mostly Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope studio, and a few other well known tenants.

Forgot to mention, this copper beauty is a flatiron building. My composition isn't as "scenic" as many of the other photographers, but it is what you see from street level. Look up and you can see the top of the pyramid building....on a clear day.

Looking back on all the great things we've seen together... the memories made.

I've learned a lot with this Nikon D5000 and its kit lens. Years went on, tried different types of shots, different types of edits, and whatnot.

Adding new lenses, flashes, tripods, intervalometers, anything...

Then it was inevitable that I will upgrade the DSLR body - as I did last year with the Nikon D7200.

But if wasn't for this Nikon D5000, I wouldn't have improved. And since last year that I upgraded, I will continue to learn and improve my techniques with my new gear and new memories to make.

I had a short vacation with my family in Pangasinan, where we get to visit my grandmother (lovingly named Inang) from my mother side. It was also their town fiesta and my mom's high school reunion. It so happened that a few of her siblings also visited from the States, so it was also a mini family reunion for all of us (though I still suffer from social anxiety, so I hardly talked, or if I did, very awkwardly lol).

Wanted to do my usual street photography, but ironically, even with the fiesta, there wasn't so much action on the streets on that time I went out to photograph - guess it didn't help that it rained heavily an hour before I went out.

So, I made due with a few shots I got when I explored the nearby plaza and around my Inang's home and neighborhood.

Back in 2012, while I still using my first DSLR, my Nikon D5000, along with the 18-55mm kit lens, I did some water drop photography and was quite happy with my shots back then.

Years later, with upgraded gear, and hopefully, upgraded skills, I wanted to try photographing water drops once again.

Sadly, I wished I chose a more colorful background to bounce the flash off of just like what I used back in 2012. Ah well. Still happy with these series of shots overall though.
